A coated cemented carbide tool, and a method for making the same, wherein the as-sintered substrate is formed by sintering in an atmosphere having at least a partial pressure and for a part of the time a nitrogen partial pressure.

A coated cemented (binder alloy, e.g., cobalt-chromium alloy) tungsten carbide cutting insert that comprises a substrate and a coating. The substrate contains at least about 70 weight percent tungsten and carbon, between about 3 weight percent and about 12 weight percent cobalt, and at least 0.09 weight percent chromium. The substrate presents a surface zone of binder alloy enrichment that begins near (or at) and extends inwardly from a peripheral surface of the substrate. The coating includes a base layer that contains chromium.

A process for making a diamond-coated tool and the tool made thereby. The process includes a sintering step. In that step, the tool substrate is sintered in an atmosphere and for a time and at a temperature so that superficial, exaggerated grain growth is promoted that imparts a surface roughness which may serve as anchoring sites during a subsequent diamond coating step which is performed by a vapor deposition technique. The diamond-coated tool prepared by the process includes a large grain substrate surface, and an high bond strength between the diamond coating and the substrate surface.

The substrate includes a rake surface region near the rake face of the substrate with a solid solution metal carbide content that is less than that of the flank surface region.

The material, upon exposure to the atmosphere, and either with or without the application of heat, will set up in a dimensionally stable form and can, thereafter, be sintered to form a solid article. The fraction of the vehicle of the composition which remains after the solvent evaporates, vaporizes during sintering and the final product consists only of the particulate material in sintered form.
