Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer is blended with polyetheramide block copolymer to form a novel composition of matter. The blended composition can be extruded and/or coextruded to make packaging films. In the most preferred embodiments, the blend is contained as one layer in a film comprising a multiplicity of layers, and at least the blend layer is molecularly oriented. Methods of making the films are also disclosed.

Film and blends of polyetheramide block copolymer and ethylene vinyl

Molecularly oriented films are produced which comprise a layer containing a blend of EVOH and nylon. The films exhibit a desirable balance of oxygen barrier and strength properties, and are ideally suited for many packaging applications.

Oriented evoh/nylon blend film

Molecularly oriented plastic films have five molecularly oriented layers. A first layer provides a barrier to gaseous transmission through the film and has a composition of 0% to 50% nylon or nylon copolymer, and conversely 50% to 100% ethylene vinyl alcohol. Second and third adhesive layers are adhered to the surfaces of the first layer, and have compositions comprising olefinic polymers, or copolymers, or blends thereof, the compositions having carboxyl modifications therein. Fourth and fifth layers are adhered to the second and third layers on the respective surfaces opposite the first layer. The fourth and fifth layers comprise 40% to 100% ethylene vinyl acetate and 0% to 60% linear low density polyethylene. Also disclosed are processes for making the oriented five layer films.

Method of making an oriented polymeric film

An improved package, including an oil-containing product, includes a multiple layer packaging sheet material which is free from cockling. The multiple layer sheet material includes a layer which is susceptible to being swelled when in contact with oil, giving a cockled appearance. With reference to the package structure, the sheet material also includes an oil barrier layer between the oil-containing product and the layer which is susceptible to being swelled when in contact with oil. The barrier layer comprises either nylon or ethylene vinyl alcohol.

A packaging film is disclosed which comprises a base sheet coated with a polycarbonate coating. The base sheet may be chosen with substantial latitude. The invention also contemplates a process for making the film.

Polycarbonate coated films

A delamination resistant multi-layer film comprises a core layer of vinyl alcohol polymers or copolymers such as polyvinyl alcohol or ethylene vinyl alcohol. Adhered to the core layer are one or more layers of a polyolefin blended with a chemically modified polyolefin having functional groups added to the basic polymer such that strong adhesion to the core layer is obtained. The core layer provides an excellent oxygen barrier, while the adjacent layers protect the core layer from degradation by exposure to water vapor. Additional layers of various polymer materials may be provided over the layers of modified polyolefin. The film can be prepared by coextrusion techniques.
