A fuel pump assembly comprises a pumping plunger for pressurizing fuel within a pumping chamber during a plunger pumping stroke; and a cam follower arrangement for imparting drive to the pumping plunger including a cam follower member which cooperates with the pumping plunger. The cam follower arrangement is biased into engagement with a cam drive while a degree of relative movement along the plunger axis is permitted between the cam follower member and the pumping plunger. At least one of the pumping plunger and the cam follower member includes a surface provided with a feature which defines together with a facing surface of the other of the pumping plunger and the cam follower member, a cushioning volume therebetween for receiving fluid to provide a cushioning effect as the pumping plunger and the cam follower member move into contact with one another, in use. The feature includes a flat central portion and an annular region which is conical in form and which is angled relative to the facing surface.

Fuel pump assembly

A fuel injector assembly comprising an injector body having a leading end, a fuel inlet passage, a backleak passage and a trailing end that terminates in an end surface; a cap that fits over the trailing end of the injector body to define therebetween a chamber for receiving fuel from said backleak passage; and a seal for sealing said chamber to prevent the flow of fuel therefrom, wherein said seal is disposed between said end surface of the trailing end and an inlet end of said fuel inlet passage.

Fuel injector assembly

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine comprises a plurality of pumps arranged to supply respective flows of pressurized fuel to a common accumulator volume that supplies the pressurized fuel in turn to a plurality of fuel injectors. An engine control unit controls the flow rate of pressurized fuel into the accumulator volume in response to engine load. The flow rate of pressurized fuel from at least one pump of the plurality is dependent upon engine speed; whereas at least one other pump of the plurality comprises a fuel output control responsive to the engine control unit enabling the flow rate of pressurized fuel from that pump to be varied independently of engine speed. In this way, the engine control unit controls the aggregate flow rate of pressurized fuel from the pumps into the accumulator volume, while controlling only one of the pumps. This reduces the cost of control apparatus and allows greater freedom of pump selection and flow circuit design.

Fuel injection system

A fuel pump for use in an internal combustion engine comprises a pump housing provided with a plunger bore, a pumping plunger which is movable within the plunger bore by means of a cam drive arrangement to perform a pumping stroke to pressurise fuel within a pumping chamber and a cam follower arrangement interposed between the cam drive arrangement and the pumping plunger so as to transmit a drive force of the drive arrangement to the pumping plunger. The cam follower arrangement includes a timing advance piston for advancing or retarding the timing of the pumping stroke, and control means for controlling the timing advance piston so as to advance or retard the timing of the pumping stroke. The timing advance piston is provided with a groove on its outer surface for receiving fluid, thereby to provide a centralising force to the timing advance piston, in use. The cam follower arrangement advantageously includes an advance piston spring which is housed within a spring cage received within a lower portion of a return spring for the pumping plunger.

Fuel injection pump

A common rail fuel pump for an internal combustion engine includes a pumping plunger () that is reciprocable within a plunger bore () provided in a pump housing () under the influence of a drive arrangement () to cause fuel pressurisation within a pump chamber (). An inlet metering valve () is operable to meter the quantity of fuel supplied to the pump chamber () during the return stroke of the plunger (). An outlet valve () controls the supply of pressurised fuel from the pumping chamber () through an outlet passage () to the common rail fuel volume in circumstances in which the inlet metering valve is closed. The outlet passage () has a pump outlet (), from where fuel is supplied to the common rail fuel volume. The inlet metering valve (), the plunger () and the pump outlet () are arranged in axial alignment, providing a compact and lightweight pump for installation in existing and purpose-built engines.

Common rail fuel pump

A fuel pump comprises a pumping plunger reciprocable within a plunger bore under the action of a cam drive arrangement. The cam drive arrangement comprises first and second surfaces defining therebetween a chamber, the volume of which can be controlled to control the spacing of the first and second surfaces so as to permit control of the axial length of the cam drive arrangement. The first surface may be defined by a tappet member which acts to transmit a force from the cam drive arrangement to the pumping plunger, the second surface being defined by a piston member which is slidable within a tappet bore formed in the tappet member. The invention also relates to an arrangement for use in a fuel pump comprising a pumping plunger which is reciprocable within a plunger bore under the action of a drive arrangement and a tappet member which is slidable within a further bore provided in a housing for transmitting a force from the drive arrangement to the pumping plunger. The arrangement comprises a yoke secured to the housing, the yoke having at least one projection extending into the bore provided in the housing, the or each projection cooperating with the tappet member so as to substantially prevent angular movement of the tappet member within the further bore.

Fuel pump

A distributor arrangement is disclosed which comprises a distributor member rotatable within a bore formed in a sleeve, the sleeve being provided with a supply port through which fuel under high pressure can be supplied to the distributor member, in use, and a plurality of delivery ports, the distributor member being provided with a delivery passage registrable with the delivery ports, in turn, upon rotation of the distributor member whereby fuel under pressure supplied through the supply port flows to a selected one of the delivery ports, in use, the distributor arrangement further comprising a porting arrangement whereby, when the distributor member occupies a position in which the delivery passage is not registered with any of the delivery ports, cooling fluid is able to flow through the delivery passage.

Distributor arrangement

A drive arrangement for driving a rotary component of a fuel pump comprises a resilient member associated with either a drive shaft or the rotary component and engageable with a surface associated with the other of the drive shaft and rotary component. In use, where a braking force greater than a predetermined level is applied to the rotary component, the member rides out of engagement with the surface permitting relative rotary motion of the drive shaft and rotary component.

Drive arrangement

A snubber valve is described which comprises a valve member slidable within a bore provided in a valve body. The valve member includes a region arranged to engage a seating, a spring biasing the valve member towards the seating. The spring engages a spring abutment region of the valve member. The valve member is provided with a passage which provides a flow path between a second end of the valve member and a part of the valve member between the first region and the spring abutment region.

Snubber valve

A fuel pump is disclosed which comprises a plunger reciprocable under the influence of a cam surface. The cam surface is shaped to include a first region and a second region. As the plunger moves under the influence of the first region, a pressure wave is generated which is able to reach a spill valve prior to the plunger moving under the influence of the second region to generate a pressure sufficient to open a delivery valve.

A fuel injection pump includes a casing; a drive shaft rotatably mounted in the casing and extending from a drive receiving end which is located outside of the casing to a point inside the casing; and first and second spaced apart seals each for preventing the flow of fluid between the casing and the drive shaft at the location of the seal. A chamber is formed between the drive shaft and the casing, the chamber being bounded at opposite ends thereof by the seals, and a vent passage extends from the chamber to a point on the surface of the casing to vent the chamber. The vent passage includes a portion defined by the clearance space between a screw threaded opening and a screw threadedly engaged with the opening. The screw is preferably a screw which secures the casing to the engine supplied by the pump. The vent prevents fuel escaping, in the event of seal failure, from the interior of an injection pump to the interior of an engine with which the injection pump is associated but does not require any additional components.

Fuel injection pump with improved shaft seal system

A rotary distributor fuel injection pump includes a pumping plunger housed in a bore and has a spill valve member integrally formed with an actuator piston contained in a cylinder. High pressure fuel from the bore can be admitted to the one end of the cylinder to move the actuator piston and valve member away from the seating by opening an on/off valve. When the spilled fuel has been returned to the bore further fuel flows to the bore by way of the on/off valve and this fuel flows to the on/off valve through a non-return valve from a source of fuel under pressure.

A fuel injection nozzle has a valve member engageable with a seating to prevent fuel flow through an outlet orifice. The valve member is engaged by the narrower end of a stepped piston member the surface of which remote from the valve member is subjected to fuel under pressure to bias the valve member into engagement with the seating. A tubular valve element the interior of which is connected to a drain, is engageable with the surface but can be moved away from the surface to lower the pressure applied to the surface. The valve member lifts away from the seating when the pressure applied to the surface is reduced by fuel pressure acting on a further surface defined on the valve member. The valve element is connected to the armature of a solenoid.

A fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type includes an accumulator volume into which fuel can be spilled to terminate delivery of fuel by the apparatus. The accumulator is defined by a movable member in the form of a sleeve which is slidable on an extension of the distributor member and has a closed end. The extension defines a seating with which can be engaged by a valve element defined by the sleeve. The extension and sleeve define an annular space connected to the pumping chamber of the apparatus and mechanical means is provided to effect initial movement of the sleeve against the action of a spring to lift the valve element from the seating to allow fuel flow into the accumulator volume.
