Method and apparatus for manufacturing thread gages and gaging pipe pins and boxes in which the pins and boxes are marked at circumferentially and axially located points with the thread systems made-up to a selected degree and matching of the marks will indicate make-up of the product thread systmes to the selected degree or the selected degree plus additional make-up and the system automatically compensates for variations from nominal dimensions.

Method and apparatus for gaging pipe threads

Apparatus is disclosed for use in testing a formation of and/or performing remedial work within a subsea well by means of a pipe string which is lowered through a conductor depending from a drilling vessel at the water surface and releasably connected at its lower end to a blowout preventor stack mounted on the head of the well. The string is landed within the well head for depending from the wellhead into the well bore, and a connected as part of the pipe string is adapted to open and close the string in response to the supply and exhaust of control fluid from a source at the surface, whereby the well may be controlled upon closing the string and raising of the upper end of the string above the means for opening and closing it and closing of the blowout preventor thereabove.

Well apparatus

Apparatus is disclosed for use in testing a formation of and/or performing remedial work within a subsea well by means of a pipe string which is lowered through a conductor depending from a drilling vessel at the water surface and releasably connected at its lower end to a blowout preventer stack mounted on the head of the well. The string is landed within the wellhead for depending from the wellhead into the well bore, and a so called subsea test tree connected as part of the pipe string has means therein adapted to open and close the string in response to the supply and exhaust of control fluid from a source at the surface, whereby the well may be controlled upon closing the string and raising of the upper end of the string above the tree and closing of the blowout preventer thereabove. A lubricator valve connected as part of the upper end of the string near its connection to the test tree has rams therein which not only permit the string to be opened and closed, but also enable the annular space about a line in the bore of the valve to be closed and/or the line to be sheared in the event of emergency conditions.

Apparatus for coupling multi-conduit drill pipes to maintain arcuate registry between connected pipes, and for transferring the drive torque of one drill pipe to the next drill pipe. One end of one drill pipe (50) includes drive lugs (100) matable with corresponding drive recesses (102) in the end of the next drill pipe (52). An index lug (104) in the drill pipe end, different that the drive lugs (100), is matable with a corresponding index recess (106) in another pipe end ot maintain arcuate registry of the coupled pipes and thus longitudinal alignment of the respective conduits (30) throughout the drill string. An internally threaded coupling collar (84) with different thread pitches at each end thereof is threadable onto the joined lug and recess mated drill pipe ends to hold the pipes mated. The joined pipe ends respectively include external threads (88, 90) of pitches corresponding to that of the coupling collar (84) so that a differential thread action draws the pipes together. A seal (86) is provided between the pipe ends so that when compressed by rotation of the coupling collar (84) each conduit (30, 62) is sealed from adjacent conduits.

Apparatus for coupling multi-conduit drill pipes

A pipe joint in which a metal-to-metal seal is provided on the exterior of the pipe, a torque shoulder provides a further metal-to-metal seal and a still further seal is provided by a resilient ring. The box is protected against ballooning which might result in jump out of the threads by proportioning the thickness of the box at the point of seal at the maximum diameter of seal to the outer diameter of the box as compared to the full wall thickness of the pipe related to the outer diameter of the pipe.

Pipe joint

A pipe joint with premium threads having both metal-to-metal and polymeric seals to block fluid leakage through the joint. A polymeric seal ring is preferably carried within an annular groove in the box end. Metal sealing surfaces, each having a different inside diameter, are provided on opposite sides of the annular groove to form metal-to-metal seals with two compatible metal sealing surfaces on the exterior of the pin member. The joint is thus characterized by two metal-to-metal seals formed on opposite sides of the annular groove to trap the seal ring therebetween. The metal-to-metal seals cooperate to prevent undesired extrusion of the seal ring.

A remote-controlled tubing safety valve having a check valve and a remotely controlled valve member operator movable between two positions. When the valve member operator is in a first position the check valve is maintained open. When the valve member operator is in a second position it does not interfere with the operation of the check valve. This abstract is neither intended to define the invention of the application which, of course, is measured by the claims, nor is it intended to be limiting as to the scope of the invention in any way.

Remote controlled tubing safety valve

Disclosed is a motion compensator to permit relative movement between an underwater well installation and a vessel on the water surface. The motion compensator includes telescoping elements, seals between the telescoping elements and ports to permit lubrication of the seals. A method of using the motion compensator is also disclosed. This abstract is neither intended to define the invention of the application which, of course, is measured by the claims, nor is it intended to be limiting as to the scope of the invention in any way.

Motion compensator

A selective down-hole tool landing shoulder employing a housing with sliding internal sleeve member positionable between first and second detented positions within the housing. Resilient collet members, depending from the sleeve, carry radially inwardly extending bosses which define a full-bore opening with the sleeve in one position, and which are forced radially inwardly by camming action to define a restrictive bore as the sleeve is positioned to the second position.
