Tetrazole-substituted benzenesulfonamides are useful as agricultural chemicals and, in particular, as growth regulants and herbicides.

Herbicidal sulfonamides

N-(heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)arylsulfonamides in which the aryl radical is substituted in the 2-position by a carboxy radical, ester, thioester, or amide thereof; e.g. N-[(4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenzenesulf onamide or N-[(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenze nesulfonamide; are useful for the regulation of plant growth and as pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.

Novel furan- and thiophenesulfonamides such as 3-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3-5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbo nyl]-2-thiophenesulfonamide and N-[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-(1, 3-dioxolan-2-yl)-2-thiophenesulfonamide are highly active pre-emergent and/or post-emergent herbicides.

N-(heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)arylsulfonamides in which the aryl radical is substituted in the 2-position by a carboxy radical, ester, thioester, or amide thereof; e.g. N-[(4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)-aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenzenesul fonamide or N-[(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenze nesulfonamide; are useful for the regulation of plant growth and as pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.

N-(heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)pyridinesulfonamides; are useful for the regulation of plant growth and as pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.

Agricultural pyridinesulfonamides

A process for preparation of chlorosulfonyl thiophene compounds comprising contacting a thiophenamine with sodium or potassium nitrite to produce a diazonium salt, then contacting said salt with sulfur dioxide and cuprous or cupric chloride, or bromide. Addition of gaseous HCl, concentrated H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, or oleum to the diazotization mixture enhances yield.

Thiophenesulfonamides useful as herbicides and plant growth regulants, herbicidal compositions containing thiophenesulfonamides, and methods of applying the compositions to areas containing undesired vegetation are described.
