An exemplary embodiment includes a blending chamber having a urea inlet, a blending chamber gas inlet, and a blending chamber outlet. A urea source provides a pressurized urea solution to the urea inlet at a urea injection pressure, and a pressurized gas source transmits pressurized gas to the blending chamber gas inlet via a passageway. The passageway is configured to decrease pressure of the pressurized gas transmitted along its length from a first pressure of gas received from the pressurized gas source to a second pressure of gas provided to the blending chamber gas inlet. The first pressure of gas received from the pressurized gas source is greater than the urea injection pressure and the second pressure of gas provided to the blending chamber gas inlet is less than the urea injection pressure.

Urea solution pumps having leakage bypass flowpaths and methods of operating the same are disclosed. Certain embodiments are pump apparatuses including an inlet passage in flow communication with a source of urea solution and a pump chamber, an outlet passage in flow communication with the pump chamber and an exhaust after treatment system, a diaphragm facing the pump chamber and coupled with an actuator, a first housing member coupled with a second housing member form a seal around the pumping chamber, a leak collection chamber surrounding the seal, and a return passage in flow communication with the leak collection chamber and the inlet passage. Urea solution that leaks from the pump chamber past the seal is received by the leak collection chamber and flows through the return passage to the pump inlet passage.

Apparatuses and methods for urea dosing of an exhaust after treatment system are disclosed. Exemplary apparatuses include a chamber configured to receive pressurized gas at a first inlet, receive urea solution at a second inlet and provide a combined flow of pressurized gas and urea to an outlet, flow passage extending from the first inlet to a seating surface, and a valve member configured to move between an open position in which the valve member is spaced apart from the seating surface and a closed position in which the valve member contacts the seating surface. As the valve member moves from the open position to the closed position, the valve member contacts the seating surface at a first location and wipes an area of the seating surface extending from the first location in a direction toward the flow passage.

A system is provided for delivery of diesel exhaust fluid or other reductant to an injector for release into an engine exhaust aftertreatment system. The injector includes a nozzle assembly that thermally shields the diesel exhaust fluid from the exhaust gas temperatures. A diesel exhaust fluid delivery procedure is also disclosed for nozzle cooling prior to operation of the injector for emissions reduction.

Systems and techniques for nozzle cooling of diesel exhaust fluid injection systems

According to one embodiment, a diesel exhaust fluid purging system includes a metering valve with a supply port and a delivery port. The purging system also includes a pump assembly that is fluidly connected to the supply port of the metering valve. The pump assembly includes a pump and a single supply line that is fluidly connectable with a diesel exhaust fluid source. The purging system further includes an injection assembly that is fluidly connected to the delivery port of the metering valve. The injection assembly includes an air supply line that is fluidly connectable with an air supply source. Additionally, the purging system includes a controller in electrical communication with the metering valve, the pump assembly, and the injection assembly. The controller is configured to purge the pump assembly of residual diesel exhaust fluid using air from the air supply line.

Apparatuses and methods for urea dosing of an exhaust after treatment system are disclosed. Exemplary apparatuses include a chamber configured to receive pressurized gas at a first inlet, receive urea solution at a second inlet, and provide a combined flow of pressurized gas and urea to an outlet, a flow passage extending from the first inlet to a seating surface, and a valve member configured to move between an open position in which the valve member is spaced apart from the seating surface and a closed position in which the valve member contacts the seating surface. As the valve member moves from the open position to the closed position the valve member contacts the seating surface at a first location and wipes an area of the seating surface extending from the first location in a direction toward the flow passage.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine may have a reductant delivery system with a reductant tank. A filter module positioned in the reductant tank filters reductant before it is conveyed to the reductant pump to remove impurities. In order to reduce gas flow to the pump, the filter module may have an outlet port leading to the reductant pump and a venting port positioned above the outlet port such that gas bubbles float to the venting port prior to entry of the reductant into the outlet port. The filter module may be secured to a tank level sensor assembly, and may vent the gas to a gas reservoir above the reductant in the reductant tank. Such a filtration system may operate independently of any return line that conveys reductant back to the reductant tank.

A reprogrammable electronic step timing control system having a fuel pressure threshold that is discretely variable as a function of engine speed. The fuel pressure threshold is increased for engine speeds above rated speed by a predetermined amount. A programming key is provided in a wiring harness to allow fuel pressure and speed thresholds to be readily changed.

A three-way fuel injection control valve assembly is provided which includes a pilot valve for controlling the movement of a drain valve member and a separate supply valve member to minimize valve response time and transition flow losses. The solenoid operated two-way pilot valve controls the flow of fuel from a control volume formed adjacent the ends of the drain valve member and the supply valve member to begin and end an injection event. A transition flow loss limiting feature is provided which causes the drain valve member to close prior to the opening of the supply valve member and subsequently causes the supply valve member to close prior to the opening of the drain valve member during a given injection event thereby minimizing transition flow losses. The transition flow loss limiting feature includes sizing the cross sectional areas of the supply valve member and the drain valve member, sizing a bias plunger for biasing the drain valve member and sizing one or more bias springs so that no opening overlap occurs between the supply valve member and the drain valve member.

A servo-controlled fuel injector is provided which includes a leakage limiting valve device for limiting the quantity of high pressure fuel available for leakage into the combustion chamber in the event the closed nozzle valve element fails to sealingly engage its seat between injection events. The servo-controlled fuel injector includes a control volume positioned adjacent an outer end of the nozzle valve element, a control volume charge circuit for supplying fuel to the control volume, a drain circuit for draining fuel from the control volume to a low pressure drain and an injection control valve positioned along the drain circuit for controlling the flow through the drain circuit so as to cause reciprocal movement of the nozzle valve element. The leakage limiting valve is integrated into the fuel injector body and positioned along a fuel transfer passage to block the flow of high pressure fuel to a nozzle cavity between injection events. The leakage limiting valve may be a cylindrical valve element positioned between the nozzle valve element and the injection control valve. Alternatively, the leakage limiting valve may be in the form of an annular valve sleeve slidably mounted on one end of the nozzle valve element so as to position the control volume immediately adjacent the injection control valve thereby minimizing the trapped volume and thus the valve response time.
