Oxoindolizine and oxoindolizinium dyes are novel compounds useful in imaging, such as laser recording and reading. These dyes are formed by (1) the reaction of a cyclopropenone and a pyridine compound, (2) by reaction of (a) color-forming couplers with (b) reaction products from the reaction of cyclopropenones with pyridine compounds, or (3) by condensation reactions of indolizinols, indolizinones, and indolizinium ions.

There are disclosed dyes, compositions, imaging elements, and methods of forming images, wherein cyclopropenones are reacted with di- or tri-halogenated compounds in the presence of pyridine to form said dyes. In areas exposed to activating radiation, the cyclopropenone decomposes and prevents the dye reaction from occurring.

Oxoindolizine and oxoindolizinium dyes are useful in photographic materials and processes as image dyes. These dyes are formed in unexposed areas of photographic materials, especially photothermographic materials, by the reaction of a photosensitive cyclopropenone with a pyridine compound. Oxoindolizine and oxoindolizinium dyes are alternatively formed by (1) reaction of a photosensitive cyclopropenone with a pyridine compound and (2) reaction of the resulting product with a color forming coupler. The photographic material is imagewise exposed and then heated to a processing temperature to form a dye image. Alternatively, the oxoindolizine and oxoindolizinium dyes are produced by imbibing at least one of the reactants into the photographic material comprising a photosensitive cyclopropenone.

In a photothermographic element comprising (A) at least one photosensitive layer comprising a photosensitive component, such as photosensitive silver halide or a diazotype photosensitive material, (B) at least one layer comprising a processing agent for the photosensitive component and (C) a separation polymer between (A) and (B), increased preexposure storage stability is provided by a polysulfonamide as separation polymer (C). After imagewise exposure of the photothermographic element, an image can be developed by merely heating the element to moderately elevated temperatures.

The composition, comprising gas entrapped in a thermoplastic matrix, can be heated to produce a visible record.

A light-sensitive vesicular imaging element and a method of manufacture are provided, comprising a vesiculating layer which includes a binder and vesiculating agent which liberates gas upon exposure to activating radiation, and an overcoat which contains a polymer soluble in a solvent in which the binder of the vesiculating layer is substantially insoluble. Upon imagewise irradiation of the element, gas bubbles are generated in the exposed areas. The bubbles may be developed to a visible record by overall heating.

Novel N-(vinylphenyl)sulfonamides and polymers thereof including copolymers of N-(vinylphenyl)sulfonamides and styrene are prepared by reacting 4-vinylaniline with an amine and a sulfonyl chloride in the presence of an acid acceptor to produce the monomer to be polymerized. The homo- and copolymers of these N-(vinylphenyl)sulfonamides are useful as vesiculating matrices in vesicular elements.
