A carton blank and method for forming a liquid-tight tapered container having a denesting tab. When the blank is folded and sealed to form an open-topped tapered container, a destacking tab is formed as a result of abhesion. The tab facilitates destacking a single container from a stack of like containers prior to their filling and final closure.

Apparatus and method for forming sealed joints, including a pouring lip sanitarily protected therein, by welding layers of thermoplastic coated paperboard together. Paperboard layers are pressed together by jaws, with relieved areas where excessive pressure would render pouring lip less satisfactory, while or after heat is applied to said paperboard layers. The apparatus and method is particularly useful for forming sealed joints for paperboard cartons, such as milk cartons.

Method and device for closing and sealing gable shaped folding cartons

A new carton blank uniquely scored and a method of folding for a liquid-tight flat top container is disclosed. The scoring pattern and tab configuration of the carton makes possible the formation of a modified gable top container the top of which is subsequently folded into the horizontal plane and held in that position leaving a flat top closure. The carbon blank is shaped and scored for folding into substantially a gable top container. An additional score line extending across one of the two roof panels and its associated triangular fold-in tabs facilitates the folding of the modified gable top into a horizontal (flat top) position. In the preferred embodiment the modified gable top, after folding, is held in its horizontal (flat top) position by a bond formed between an extension of one of the sealing tabs and one of the roof panels of the modified gable top. The sealing tab extension is attached to the remainder of the carton by a perforated section of the carton blank to allow one desiring to open the flat top container to tear along the perforation and fold the modified gable top into its pour spout position. In an alternative embodiment the bond holding the modified gable top in its horizontal position is created between a single conventional sealing tab and one of the roof panels of the modified gable top. In this second embodiment, one desiring to open the carton need only break the bond, and fold the modified gable top into its pour spout position.

Method for forming a liquid-tight flat top container

Apparatus is disclosed for use with a conventional bottom closure folding machine for ultrasonically sealing folded carton bottom closures having at least two differing thicknesses or laminates comprising, in part, a unique sealing horn and multi-surface mandrel pad arrangement which makes possible the ultrasonic sealing of a laminated bottom closure of varying thicknesses for a container composed of thermoplastic double coated foldable material such as, for example, a polyethylene double coated paperboard carton. The sealing horn comprises a substantially conventional body portion surmounted by a face having a recessed portion and a raised portion for forcibly engaging the folded carton bottom closure and forming an ultrasonic seal at predetermined critical areas of the bottom closure. The multi-surface mandrel pad has a multiplicity of surfaces which lie in at least two distinct planes and which are shaped to receive and engage sections of tabs and panels of the folded carton bottom closure so that when the sealing horn and multisurface mandrel pad are forcibly urged together, the force exerted on the folded carton bottom closure over the area of contact between the face portion of the sealing horn and the surface of the folded carton bottom closure is substantially uniform. The multi-surface mandrel pad, through its multiplicity of surfaces, receives and engages sections of tabs and panels of the infolded surface of the folded carton bottom closure during sealing thereby preventing excessive vibration of those portions of the carton bottom closure which are not in forcible engagement with the raised portion of the sealing horn face during sealing thereby avoiding unwanted 'burn through'.
