The disclosure is of a cathode ray tube having a face plate for displaying information and carrying an electrode assembly which is curved to adhere smoothly to the face plate. The electrode assembly includes a shield against radio frequency interference and an insulating support sheet having an inner surface and an outer surface, on each of which an array of rows and columns of conductive areas is formed. On the inner surface, the rows of conductive areas are electrically connected together to output contact pads at a side edge of the sheet, and, on the outer surface, the columns of conductive areas are electrically connected together to output contact pads along the lower edge of the sheet. Each outer conductive area overlies and is capacitively coupled to an inner conductive area. A column conductor which extends from a contact pad at an edge of the outer surface of the sheet is capacitively coupled to each column of outer conductive areas. The conductive areas on the outer surface are intimately capacitively coupled to the column conductors so that optimum signal coupling is achieved.

The disclosure is of a cathode ray tube having a face plate for displaying information and carrying an electrode assembly which is curved to couple intimately to the face plate. The electrode assembly includes a shield against radio frequency interference and an insulating support sheet having an inner surface and an outer surface, on each of which an array of rows and columns of conductive areas is formed. On the inner surface, the rows of conductive areas are electrically connected together to output contact pads at a side edge of the sheet, and, on the outer surface, the columns of conductive areas are electrically connected together to output contact pads along the lower edge of the sheet. Each outer conductive area overlies and is capacitively coupled to an inner conductive area. A column conductor which extends from a contact pad at an edge of the outer surface of the sheet is capacitively coupled to each column of outer conductive areas. The method of the invention comprises forming the desired conductive areas of indium-tin-oxide on a flat glass sheet and then sagging the glass sheet to the desired curvature.

Method of making a curved electrode plate

The panel comprises a gas-filled envelope formed by a base plate and a face plate hermetically sealed together by a ring of fusible sealing material. The interior of the envelope includes a display area which consists of glow cathodes and one or more anodes. Adjacent to the display area and near one end of the panel is provided a source of mercury which comprises a glass capillary tube containing a droplet of mercury. The mercury capillary tube is supported by a generally C-shaped insulating layer which is formed when the ring of fusible sealing material is formed, and of the same material. This C-shaped layer, like the sealing ring, is in contact with, and lies between, the base plate and face plate. The glass capillary is embedded at one end and at about its midpoint in this seal material, with the opposite end being free and unsupported. The free end of the capillary can be shattered by a laser to release mercury vapor into the panel envelope. The small spacing between the capillary and both the base plate and face plate prevents mercury droplets held inside the C-shaped layer from entering the display area of the panel, and, after the initial opening of the capillary, during which droplets might appear, no further droplets will leave the capillary, due to capillary adhesion, and only mercury vapor will be emitted.

The garment includes a collar portion to be worn around the neck and an auxiliary porous shield portion which is adapted to be raised in front of the face and secured along its edge to the lower edge of the visor portion of a helmet of the type worn by motorcycle riders.

Protective garment for the face

The display panel is filled with an ionizable gas and includes a base plate on which a plurality of groups of cathodes and their conductors are formed, each group of cathodes being operable to display a character. The panel also includes a face plate, spaced from the base plate, and carrying transparent conductive anodes, each associated with one group of cathodes. The base plate and face plate are hermetically sealed together by a frame of a sealing material formed from a thin layer of powdered glass in a removable carrier. The panel is made by assembling all of the parts and sealing the envelope but including a wire in the frame of sealing material. After the seal has been formed, the wire is removed to leave a small hole providing gas communication with the interior of the panel. The panel is then placed in an oven and evacuated, baked out, and filled with the desired gas filling through the hole, after which the hole is hermetically sealed. A separate mass of sealing material may also be provided to seal the hole left by the wire.

Method of making a hermetic seal therein a multi-position character

The apparatus of the invention comprises a cup-shaped metal ring carrying a mercury amalgam from which mercury can be released, the ring being held within a supporting mass of fibrous insulating material and the entire assembly loosely mounted in the tubulation secured to the base plate of a display panel.

Mercury capsule assembly for display panel

A mercury capsule comprises a mercury-filled metal tube, of measured capacity, having closed ends, each of which includes end portions which are cold welded and resistance welded to form an hermetic seal and intermediate portions, which are crimped closed. The length of the intermediate crimped portions of each capsule is designed to permit the mercury within the capsule to expand and stress the lightly crimped portions, during processing operations of a device in which a capsule is mounted, without opening the hermetically sealed end portions of each capsule. The method of the invention comprises filling a metal tube with mercury, closing the open end, and forming light crimps in the tube at spaced locations to form individual capsules, each of which is filled with a measured quantity of mercury. The crimped portions of the tube are processed to form lightly sealed portions on each side of the chamber which contains the mercury and tightly closed portions adjacent to the lightly closed portions at the ends of the capsules. The two closed portions have different resistance to opening under mercury vapor pressure at elevated temperatures, with the lightly closed portion being able to open at a temperature at which the tightly closed portion will not open.
