A method for detecting and recognizing speech is provided that remotely detects body motions from a speaker during vocalization with one or more radar sensors. Specifically, the radar sensors include a transmit aperture that transmits one or more waveforms towards the speaker, and each of the waveforms has a distinct wavelength. A receiver aperture is configured to receive the scattered radio frequency energy from the speaker. Doppler signals correlated with the speaker vocalization are extracted with a receiver. Digital signal processors are configured to develop feature vectors utilizing the vocalization Doppler signals, and words associated with the feature vectors are recognized with a word classifier.

A method to enhance target detectability on a radar plan position indicator s described which includes the receiving of coherent pulse-burst waveforms from a target so that at least one complete burst is included in each dwell of a scanning surveillance fan beam. A fast fourier transform is performed on each returned coherent burst to form Doppler channels in predetermined range cells. The largest signal of the Doppler channels in each range cell is then selected and color coded. The color coded signals are applied to a plan position indicator whereby target images are viewable. Preferably, the Doppler channels are color coded over a rainbow spectrum so that a white background is produced and target images appear as tracks on a microprocessor-based raster-type plan position indicator. A continuity test and threshold test are also utilized so that target velocity and position are determined.

A communications system which decreases noise errors and increases informon rate without sacrificing bandwidth is formed by a transmitter and a receiver designed to handle long pulse compression wavforms. An encoder connected to the transmitter converts a voice message into digitized voice words, encodes the digitized voice words into the time shifted code sequences, and phase modulates the long pulse compression waveform, producing a M-ary coded signal at the output of the transmitter. The receiver is connected to a decoder which includes at least one convolver for computing the correlation of received digitally coded words with independently generated time shifted code sequences, and a controller for generating a plurality of data values according to the largest correlation values, and a transducer responsive to the data values.

A system, which interfaces with a radar indicator, for improving signal-toise ratio (SNR) and enhancing the detection of moving targets includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter, an integrator, a digital memory, a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, and a synchro-to-digital converter. Radar video is converted to digital signals which are integrated and stored in memory. The angle signal from the antenna pedestal synchro is fed to the synchro-to-digital converter and stored in memory. The contents of the memory is processed, converted to analog form, and fed to the indicator. The radar provides a number M of sweeps within each beamwidth, or angular sector, of the antenna during each antenna scan. Contiguous sets of M sweeps are added to form batches. The signal content for each batch is displayed on the indicator in the angular sector which is identified with the M sweeps. The width of each sector is approximately a beamwidth. Within each sector a number N of batches, which are formed during N successive scans, is displayed on the indicator such that the batch formed during the latest scan appears at the clockwise boundary of a sector and the batch formed during the oldest scan appears at the counterclockwise boundary. The SNR is improved by digitally adding M successive sweeps and displaying the results from N successive scans in a manner whereby signal-plus-noise from one scan is not corrupted by noise from other scans.
