A hydrocarbon feedstock is catalytically reformed in a process which comprises contacting the feedstock in a first catalyst zone with a catalyst consisting essentially of platinum, germanium and halogen on a solid catalyst support. The product from the first catalyst zone is contacted in a second catalyst zone with a catalyst comprising platinum, germanium, halogen and a metal promoter on a solid catalyst support.

A novel catalytic composite for the conversion of hydrocarbons is disclosed. The catalytic composite comprises a refractory inorganic oxide, a first uniform dispersion of a platinum component and a rhenium component, and a second dispersion of an indium component thereover. The composite further comprises a halogen component and a sulfur component. In addition to a novel catalytic composite there is also disclosed a method of preparing the composite and a novel process for the use of the composite.

A process able to separate ortho-xylene from the other C.sub.8 aromatics. In the process the ortho-xylene-containing feed mixture is contacted with an X-type zeolite having silver cations at exchangeable cationic sites which has been subjected to a reduction step. The ortho-xylene is selectively adsorbed onto the adsorbent. The feed is then removed from the absorbent and the ortho-xylene recovered by desorption with para-diethylbenzene. The process is particularly amenable to the simulated moving bed flow scheme.

A new catalyst composition for converting hydrocarbons is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method for making the catalyst. The catalyst comprises a platinum group component and a phosphorous component with a porous support material. The catalyst is made by compositing a platinum group component with a porous support material and then contacting that composite with phosphorus or a compound of phosphorus. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a catalyst comprising platinum, phosphorus and chlorine with alumina is utilized in the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range to produce a high octane reformate suitable for gasoline blending or a high aromatics content reformate suitable as a petrochemical feedstock.

One precipitate is a compound of aluminum and another is a compound of magnesium. The precipitates are simultaneously precipitated from a common solution in which they have a highly limited solubility.

Dehydrogenatable hydrocarbons are dehydrogenated by contacting them, at dehydrogenation conditions, with a catalytic composite comprising a combination of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component, a nickel component, and a zinc component with a porous carrier material. A specific example of the nonacidic catalytic composite disclosed herein is a combination of a platinum group component, a nickel component, a zinc component, and an alkali or alkaline earth component with a porous carrier material in amounts sufficient to result in a composite containing about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % platinum group metal, about 0.05 to about 5 wt. % nickel, about 0.01 to about 5 wt. % zinc, and about 0.1 to about 5 wt. % alkali metal or alkaline earth metal.

A new process for reforming hydrocarbons is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method for making a catalyst utilized in the process. The catalyst comprises a platinum group component and a phosphorous component with a porous support material. The catalyst is made by compositing a platinum group component with a porous support material and then contacting that composite with phosphorus or a compound of phosphorus to incorporate the phosphorous component. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a catalyst comprising platinum, phosphorus and chlorine with alumina is utilized in the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range to produce a high octane reformate suitable for gasoline blending or a high aromatics content reformate suitable as a petrochemical feedstock.

Dehydrogenatable hydrocarbons are dehydrogenated by contacting them at hydrocarbon dehydrogenation conditions with a multimetallic catalytic composite comprising a combination of a catalytically effective amount of a pyrolyzed ruthenium carbonyl component with a porous carrier material containing a uniform dispersion of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component maintained in the elemental metallic state, and of a rhenium component. An optional non-acidic multimetallic catalytic composite disclosed herein is a combination of a catalytically effective amount of a pyrolyzed ruthenium carbonyl component with a porous carrier material containing a uniform dispersion of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component which is maintained in the elemental metallic state during the incorporation of the ruthenium carbonyl component, a rhenium component, and an alkali or alkaline earth component.

Hydrocarbon dehydrogenation with a multimetallic catalytic composite

Hydrocarbons are converted by contacting them at hydrocarbon conversion conditions with an acidic multimetallic catalytic composite comprising a combination of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component, a cobalt component, a tin component, a phosphorus component and a halogen component with a porous carrier material. The platinum group, cobalt, tin, phosphorus and halogen components are present in the multimetallic catalyst in amounts respectively, calculated on an elemental basis, corresponding to about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % platinum group metal, about 0.05 to about 5 wt. % cobalt, about 0.01 to about 5 Wt. % tin, about 0.01 to about 5 wt. % phosphorus and about 0.1 to about 3.5 wt. % halogen. A specific example of the type of hydrocarbon conversion process disclosed is a process for the catalytic reforming of a low-octane gasoline fraction wherein the gasoline fraction and a hydrogen stream are contacted with the acidic multimetallic catalyst disclosed herein at reforming conditions.
