Photosensitive lithium zinc aluminosilicate glasses that can be selectively irradiated and cerammed to provide patterned regions of glass and lithium-based glass ceramic, and composite glass articles made from such glasses and glass ceramics are provided. The lithium zinc aluminosilicate glass can be negatively photosensitive or positively photosensitive to radiation having a wavelength in a range from about 248 nm to about 360 nm.

Photosensitive glasses and glass ceramics and composite glass materials made therefrom

Solid lithium-ion ceramic electrolyte membranes have an average thickness of less than 200 micrometers. A constituent electrolyte material has an average grain size of less than 10 micrometers. The solid lithium-ion ceramic electrolyte is free-standing. Alternatively, solid lithium-ion electrolyte membranes have a composition represented by LiMM'M″(PO), where M is a 3ion, M′ is a 4ion, M″ is a 5ion, 0≤x≤2 and 0≤y≤2.

Reactive sintering of ceramic lithium-ion solid electrolytes

Embodiments of a transparent glass-based material comprising a glass phase and a second phase that is different from and is dispersed in the glass phase are provided. The second phase may comprise a crystalline or a nanocrystalline phase, a fiber, and/or glass particles. In some embodiments, the second phase is crystalline. In one or more embodiments, the glass-based material has a transmittance of at least about 88% over a visible spectrum ranging from about 400 nm to about 700 nm and a fracture toughness of at least about 0.9 MPa·m, and wherein a surface of the glass-based material, when scratched with a Knoop diamond at a load of at least 5 N to form a scratch having a width w, is free of chips having a size of greater than 3 w.

Disclosed herein is glass-ceramic and glass-ceramic articles including a crystalline phase comprising a jeffbenite crystalline structure, glass that may be cerammed to become such, and methods of making and using the same.

Precursor glasses and glass-ceramics comprising a crystalline phase having a jeffbenite crystalline structure

A glass-ceramic article comprises silica, lithia, phosphorus pentoxide, and zirconia in amounts that, when heat treated, provide a glass-ceramic including a lithium disilicate (LSiO) crystalline phase. The glass-ceramic may have high fracture toughness, transparency, hardness, and may be strengthen via ion-exchange.

High strength glass-ceramics

A group of glass compositions in the LiO—AlO—SiO—BOfamily that can be chemically strengthened in single or multiple ion exchange baths containing at least one of NaNOand KNOfor a short time (2-4 hours) to develop a deep depth of layer (DOL). In some instances, the DOL is at least 70 μm; in others, at least about 100 μm. The ion exchanged glasses have a high damage resistance (indentation fracture toughness ranging form greater than 10 kgf to greater than 50 kgf) that is better than or at least comparable to that of sodium aluminosilicate glasses.

Chemically strengthenable lithium aluminosilicate glasses with inherent damage resistance

Disclosed herein are glass-ceramic articles including a crystalline phase comprising a jeffbenite crystalline structure. The glass-ceramic articles may include a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a perimeter defining a shape of the glass-ceramic article. The glass-ceramic articles may further include a phase assemblage comprising one or more crystalline phases and a glass phase. The one or more crystalline phases may include a crystalline phase having the jeffbenite crystalline structure.

A glass-ceramic article comprises in wt % on an oxide basis SiOin an amount greater than or equal to 55 wt % and less than or equal to 80 wt %, AlOin an amount greater than or equal to 2 wt % and less than or equal to 20 wt %, LiO in an amount greater than or equal to 5 wt % and less than or equal to 20 wt %, POin an amount greater than 0 wt % and less than or equal to 6 wt %, and ZrOin an amount greater than or equal to 0.2 wt % and less than or equal to 15 wt %. A sum of ZrOand POis greater than or equal to 3 wt %. The glass-ceramic article comprises a lithium disilicate (LiSiO) crystalline phase, where the lithium disilicate is between 40 wt % to 60 wt % of the glass-ceramic article.

In embodiments, a glass includes from 45 mol % to 70 mol % SiO; from 11.5 mol % to 25 mol % AlO; from 2 mol % to 20 mol % LiO; from greater than 0 mol % to 10 mol % NaO; from 9 mol % to 19 mol % MgO; from 4 mol % ZrO; and from 0 mol % to 0.5 mol % TiO. In other embodiments, a glass includes from 45 mol % to 70 mol % SiO; from 4 mol % to 25 mol % AlO; from 5 mol % to 20 mol % LiO; from 0.1 mol % to 10 mol % NaO; from 6 mol % to 25 mol % MgO; from 0.1 mol % to 4 mol % ZrO; from 0.1 mol % to 5 mol % KO; and from 0.05 mol % to 0.5 mol % SnO.

Ion exchangeable glasses having high fracture toughness

In embodiments, a precursor glass composition comprises from about 55 wt. % to about 80 wt. % SiO; from about 2 wt. % to about 20 wt. % AlO; from about 5 wt. % to about 20 wt. % LiO; greater than 0 wt % to about 3 wt. % NaO; a non-zero amount of POless than or equal to 4 wt. %; and from about 0.2 wt. % to about 15 wt. % ZrO. In embodiments, ZrO(wt. %)+PO(wt. %) is greater than 3. When the precursor glass composition is converted to a glass-ceramic article, the glass-ceramic article may include grains having a longest dimension of less than 100 nm.

High strength glass-ceramics having petalite and lithium silicate structures

An opaque gahnite-spinel glass ceramic is provided. The glass ceramic includes a first crystal phase including (MgZn)AlOwhere x is less than 1 and a second crystal phase includes at least one of tetragonal ZrO, MgTaO, mullite, and cordierite. The glass ceramic has a Young's modulus greater than or equal to 90 GPa, and has a hardness greater than or equal to 7.5 GPa. The glass ceramic may be ion exchanged. Methods for producing the glass ceramic are also provided.

Ion exchangeable, opaque gahnite-spinel glass ceramics with high hardness and modulus

A glass-ceramic includes SiOin a range of 40 mol. % to 80 mol. %; AlOin a range of 5 mol. % to 20 mol. %; MgO in a range of 5 mol. % to 20 mol. %; and at least one of BO, ZnO, and TiO, each in a range of 0 mol. % to 10 mol. %, such that the glass-ceramic further comprises a magnesium aluminosilicate crystalline phase at a concentration in a range of 5 wt. % to 80 wt. % of the glass-ceramic.
