A plasma display includes a front panel having a glass body secured to a surface of a substrate. The glass body has a plurality of channels in the exposed surface thereof with upstanding ribs being between the channels. Conductive first electrodes are on the body with each electrode extending along the bottom of a separate channel. The first electrodes are preferably embedded in the glass body. A transparent front panel is over the back panel and is seated on and secured to the glass body. A plurality of spaced, parallel second electrodes extend between the front panel and the back panel substantially orthogonally to the first electrodes. Phosphors which emit different colors are coated on the channels and the channels are filled with a plasma gas. The back panel is formed of at least one and preferably a plurality of layers of a green tape of glass particles in a binder. The layers are stacked one on top of each other and the channels are formed in the surface of one of the layers. The stack is placed on a substrate and fired to bond the layers together and to the substrate. Prior to firing the stack, the first electrodes can be formed on one of the layers so that after firing the electrodes are embedded in the resulting glass body. For a body formed from a single layer of the green tape, the channels are formed in the surface of the layer which is opposite to the substrate.

Method of making a plasma display

A plasma display includes a front panel having a glass body secured to a surface of a substrate. The glass body has a plurality of channels in the exposed surface thereof with upstanding ribs being between the channels. Conductive first electrodes are on the body with each electrode extending along the bottom of a separate channel. The first electrodes are preferably embedded in the glass body. A transparent front panel is over the back panel and is seated on and secured to the glass body. In accordance with the present invention, an apparatus for developing a latent image formed on a photoreceptor, which is deposited on an interior surface of an output window of a display device, is disclosed. The developing apparatus includes a developing chamber, having a support surface for supporting the output window, a screen structure material reservoir for storing, deagglomerating and feeding the screen structure material, and a triboelectric gun assembly communicating with the reservoir. The gun assembly triboelectric charges and imparts a desired charge polarity to the screen structure material. The gun assembly further includes at least one material dispersing nozzle spaced from the support surface for distributing the charged material for deposition onto the latent image.

An apparatus for fusing a polymer powder deposited on a surface of a faceplate panel of a cathode-ray tube comprises a housing having a faceplate support surface and enclosing a chamber. A shutter adjacent to the panel support surface separates the faceplate panel from the chamber. A reservoir for holding a solvent is within the chamber and at least one piezoelectric transducer communicates with the reservoir for atomizing the solvent to create a fog. A fan within the chamber distributes the fog onto the polymer powder. A method for fusing the polymer powder onto the faceplate panel also is described.

In an electrophotographic process for manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly on an interior surface of a faceplate panel of a CRT, the panel is first coated with a conductive layer and then overcoated with a photoconductive layer. A substantially uniform charge is established on the photoconductive layer. Selected areas of the photoconductive layer are exposed to actinic radiation, through a shadow mask, to affect the charge on the layer. The unexposed areas of the photoconductive layer are developed with triboelectrically-charged, dry-powdered, light-absorptive screen structure material. The photoconductive layer is reexposed to further discharge those open areas free of the light absorptive material while retaining the charge on those areas having light absorptive matrix material thereon. The reexposure increases the voltage contrast between the exposed and the unexposed areas of the photoconductive layer. A second development of the unexposed areas of the photoconductive layer deposits additional light-absorptive screen structure material on the previously deposited material to increase the opacity of the matrix formed thereby.

A method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent screen on an interior concave surface of a CRT faceplate panel having a major axis with a first center of curvature and a minor axis with a second center of curvature, the method including the steps of utilizing a charging apparatus for uniformly charging a photoconductive layer disposed on the concave surface of the faceplate panel by providing a corona voltage from a corona generator to at least one corona charger which has an arcuately-shaped charging electrode, the corona charger has a center of curvature substantially concentric with a center of curvature of the concave surface of the panel, a support arm attached to the corona charger is pivotably located at the other center of curvature, the corona charger substantially conforms to, and is spaced from the photoconductive layer on the concave surface, and moving the corona charger across the concave surface.

An apparatus for uniformly charging a photoconductive layer disposed on an interior, non-planar surface of a faceplate panel of a CRT during electrophotographic screen processing of the panel includes a corona generator having at least one corona charger and a mechanism for moving the corona charger across the non-planar surface of the faceplate panel. The corona charger substantially conforms to, and is spaced from the photoconductive layer on the non-planar, interior surface of the faceplate panel.

A video disc player includes a pick-up cartridge in which the stylus is supported by a stylus holder that is mechanically resonant at a frequency within an audio frequency range. A pick-up converter coupled to the stylus provides a broad audio video output signal that is undesirably modulated due to the stylus holder mechanical resonance. The audio signal is demodulated to baseband and linearly combined with the un-demodulated broadband signal to provide a resultant audio output signal in which audio frequency noise components, due to the mechanical resonance of the resulus holder, are attenuated.

A cutting stylus is positioned with respect to a metal substrate in order to cut a groove. The cutting stylus is vibrated about a quiescent position in response to a relatively high frequency signal while cutting the groove in order to cut an information track comprising short wavelength modulation of the groove depth. Relative motion is established between the metal substrate and the cutting stylus such that the information track is cut along a spiral path. The relative motion is varied in a predetermined manner as the stylus cuts across the surface of the metal substrate such that the spiral information track is formed having a varying pitch to reduce the formation of damaging ridges on the cutting edge of the stylus.

An adaptive video disc record stylus kicker system for inducing limited stylus translation radially across the disc record. Control circuitry responsive to track identification signals recorded on the disc and to player commands evaluates the error between actual kicker induced stylus translations and the programmed kicker induced stylus translations to calibrate the stylus kicker drive signals.

A system for suspending a video disc signal pickup stylus arm incorporated with a permanent magnet which is part of a motive means for providing stylus-disc velocity corrections. The permanent magnet is constraind in a flexible 'H' shaped suspension to maintain the magnet in a fixed orientation while undergoing translation. The stylus arm is compliantly coupled to the 'H' shaped suspension colinear with the magnet. Off axis forces on the magnet are precluded from imparting off axis forces to the stylus arm, thereby eliminating the stimuli which create mechanical resonances in the stylus arm.

In a video disc system, the picture display is adversely affected by intermodulation distortion occuring in the signals recovered from the disc record. A non-linear circuit, responsive to a bias signal, generates a compensation signal in a diode modulator for cancelling the undesired distortion components of the recovered signal. The resulting distortion after cancellation is measured in a comparator circuit to determine if the distortion has increased or decreased. The comparator circuitry outputs an appropriate signal to bias the non-linear circuit to further reduce the distortion components. A small oscillation is superimposed on this bias signal, which oscillation simplifies the comparator circuitry and forces the circuit to search for an optimum operating point.

A cartridge for a video disc stylus having a stylus-position sensor, including an electrode mounted to the cartridge walls. An appendage is provided on the cartridge wall to position the sensor electrode proximate the stylus, the appendage being contoured to accept a preformed sensor electrode. The sensor electrode is formed from sufficiently resilient material to recover from deformation during electrode-appendage engagement and constrain itself to a particular position in the cartridge by compressive forces developed between the electrode and the appendage.

Apparatus in a video disc player for previewing or scanning information on a record disc. A position sensor detects the position of a playback stylus relative to the carriage assembly for translating the stylus radially across the disc. The position sensor output signals energize a stylus skipper mechanism to translate the stylus a prescribed number of information tracks in accordance with the stylus carriage bias exceeding a threshold value. The carriage is manually moved across the record with the sensor and skipper mechanism cooperating to translate the stylus in consonance with the carriage movement.

A disc master, coated with an electron sensitive material, is secured to a turntable which is rotatably mounted within a vacuum chamber. A recorder column protrudes into the vacuum chamber for directing a signal representative electron beam toward the disc master. The recorder column is mounted on a carriage for translational motion along a path radially disposed with respect to the center of rotation of the turntable in correlation with the rotational motion of the turntable. A column set-up stage is mounted within the vacuum chamber, adjacent the outside perimeter of a turntable supported disc master, and in registration with the coated surface of the disc master. The recorder column is aligned with the set-up stage for determining beam characteristics, such as: beam current, shape, quality, etc., and for properly focusing the electron beam.
