A connecting rod assembly for rocking piston compressors, diaphragm compressors and vacuum pumps is provided where the overall height of the connecting rod assembly is dependent only upon the overall height of the connecting rod structure and is not dependent upon the thickness of the diaphragm or the thickness of the retainer plate. The connecting rod includes a disk portion for supporting an annular diaphragm in the case of a diaphragm pump or a cup in the case of a rocking piston compressor or a vacuum pump. The connecting rod also includes a distal end section that extends upward through the annular diaphragm and through an annular retainer plate. The diaphragm or cup is sandwiched between the annular retainer plate and the disk portion of the connecting rod. The overall height of the assembly is determined by the distance between the end face of the disk portion of the connecting rod and the crank end of the connecting rod. The annular retainer plate bottoms out on the disk portion of the connecting rod and therefore does not contribute any height variability to the assembly. Because the diaphragm or cup is trapped below the annular retainer plate, the diaphragm does not contribute any height variability to the assembly as well.

A multi-speed hydrostatic drive is disclosed. The drive comprises the combination of a drive unit having at least one output connectable to a motive member and at least first and second inputs. A clutch unit is connected to the first drive unit input, and a first fixed displacement hydraulic motor is connected to the clutch unit so as to drive the drive unit first input through the clutch when the clutch is engaged. A brake unit is connected to the second drive unit input. A second fixed displacement hydraulic motor is connected to the brake unit so as to drive the drive unit second input when the brake is disengaged. A variable displacement hydraulic pump is also provided. A hydraulic circuit delivers the pressurized fluid to the first and to the second hydraulic motors to provide a relatively low speed, high torque drive. Alternatively, the hydraulic circuit can be set to deliver pressurized fluid to the second motor only to provide a relatively high speed, low torque drive to the motive member.

Multi-range hydraulic drive

A hydraulic or fluid-power brake is disclosed. The brake comprises a stationary housing, and a rotor shaft journaled in the housing. A number of rotor discs are carried on the shaft for rotation therewith, but they are adapted for axial sliding motion on the shaft, as by a spline arrangement. A number of stator discs are interleaved with the rotor discs and are carried on torque pins mounted in the housing for sliding motion in the direction of the rotor shaft axis, but are secured against rotational movement with the rotor shaft and rotor discs. Biasing means such as springs urge the stator discs into braking engagement with the rotor discs. To relieve this braking action and permit free shaft rotation, a primary piston, having an annular skirt surrounding the rotor discs, engages one stator disc to apply a force urging that stator disc in a direction opposite to the force applied by the biasing means so as to release the braking action. A secondary device is included for opposing the primary piston action so as to permit the biasing means to urge the stator discs into braking engagement with the rotor discs. This secondary means can be independently energized, by fluid pressure or mechanical means as by a service brake. In one embodiment, this secondary means includes a piston carried in an annular cylinder chamber; the piston is located to apply an annular force against the stator disc in opposition to the force applied by the primary piston.

Combined failsafe and service brake

An hydraulic clutch is provided, which is positively engaged by hydraulic means, and is disengaged by mechanical means. The clutch includes a male cone member carried for rotation on an input shaft, and for limited axial sliding movement therealong. Interconnection between the male cone member and the input shaft is provided by a series of elongated pins carried in recesses formed in the male cone member and in the input shaft. A female cone member, formed integrally with an output shaft, receives the male cone member for driving engagement. When engagement is desired, a fluid pressure piston and thrust plate urge the male cone member axially along the input shaft into driving engagement with the female cone member. A stop pin carried by the thrust plate engages an abutment for limiting the axial motion of the hydraulic piston and male cone member. When disengagement is desired, fluid pressure is released, and a resilient mechanical device such as a set of springs urges the male cone member out of engagement with the female cone member. A second mechanical device such as an additional set of springs returns the thrust plate and piston to their deactivated positions.

Hydraulically actuated cone clutch

A hydrostatic drive is disclosed in combination with a machine tool such as a sand core molding machine. A machine of this type comprises a fixed carriage and a core molding die mounted for rotation on the carriage. The drive includes a reversible fluid power motor having an output shaft. The motor output shaft is connected to a fail safe fluid power brake, and the brake shaft is, in turn, connected to a power transmission unit. When fluid power is applied to the brake and the motor, brake override means operate to release the brake to permit the motor shaft, brake shaft and tranmission to be turned by the motor and thereby operate the movable die.
