A slow setting resin-bonded taphole mix consisting essentially of a uniform admixture of a refractory grog and a bonding composition consisting essentially of a low volatile high softening point phenolic resin, a high boiling point for said resin, and a clay, and the method of using said mix to seal tapholes.

Resin-bonded taphole mix

A refractory composition capable, when mixed with water, of forming a hydraulic-setting castable refractory resistant to aluminum penetration and adhesion and with good load bearing properties consisting essentially of a refractory aggregate, a binder for said refractory aggregate, and an aluminum anti-adhesive agent; said agent consisting of a fine powder barium sulfate and a powdered zinc borosilicate frit in a weight ratio of 1.5:1 to 5:1.

Castable refractory

A castable silica refractory consisting essentially of 58-78 by weight percent amorphous silica selected from the group consisting of vitreous and fused silica or a combination thereof; 10-30 by weight percent quartzite; 4-10 by weight percent volatilized silica; 2-3 by weight percent wollastonite powder; and 1-3 by weight percent white portland cement; plus as additions about 0.4 by weight percent water reducing agent and 6-10 by weight percent water.

Silica castables

A vibratable plastic refractory composition which is based upon calcined kaolin and a non-basic calcined refractory aggregate, in which the -325 mesh fraction of the batch is controlled to between about 30 and 45%.

Vibratable plastic refractory

The disclosure relates to monolithic refractories which can be used on the job site without any preparation, i.e. addition of additives and consists of a high alumina containing material, a reactive alumina containing material, kaolin clay and crude kyanite to which are added the combination of phosphoric acid and water.

Monolithic refractories

A refractory composition suitable for use as a mortar which consists of chromic oxide and high alumina refractory material and a bonding material consisting of anhydroglucose polymer and phosphoric acid, the composition being substantially free of SiO.sub.2.
