The present invention is an apparatus, device or tool for performing endoscopic (that is, minimally invasive) surgery. An exemplary embodiment of the invention includes a video endoscope whilst in another embodiment of the invention includes an endoscopic surgical tool which, when equipped with one of a suite of endoscopic surgical instruments, can be used by a surgeon to perform surgical procedures inside a body. Another embodiment of the present invention includes a suite of endoscopic surgical instruments designed to work co-operatively with the endoscopic surgical tool. In another embodiment of the present invention, a video-assisted endoscopic surgical tool system is provided. In one embodiment, the system includes the video-assisted endoscopic surgical tool and a suite of at least one endoscopic surgical instrument.

Endoscopic surgical system

A stereoscopic image sensor apparatus including a pair of image sensors adjacently fabricated on a common carrier is disclosed, the common carrier being a diced portion of a carrier on which an aligned plurality of image sensors have been fabricated within an alignment tolerance, the alignment tolerance including a target lateral offset between the adjacent image sensors, and a target orientation between corresponding rows of light sensitive elements on the adjacent image sensors. An alternative stereoscopic image sensor apparatus includes a common window having first and second image sensors bonded to the common window within the alignment tolerance. Another alternative stereoscopic image sensor apparatus includes rear faces of respective first and second image sensors being bonded to a common circuit substrate within the alignment tolerance. Methods for fabricating the stereoscopic image sensors are also disclosed.

Stereoscopic imaging sensor apparatus and method for fabricating pairs of image sensors used in stereoscopic imaging

Methods and apparatuses for transmitting images captured by first and second image sensors are disclosed. In some embodiments, each image sensor generates a plurality of pixel values each represented by a plurality of data bits having a pixel bit length. In some embodiments, a method involves combining pixel values generated by each of the first and second image sensors into a single image data stream, transforming the single image data stream into a plurality of data words having a word bit length, and encoding the data by selection of one of a plurality of symbols having an encoded bit length that is at least one bit longer than the word bit length to reduce a running disparity. The method also involves serializing the symbols to generate and transmit a DC balanced serial bitstream. Methods for synchronizing a receiver for extracting image data from the serial bitstream are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for transmitting images captured by first and second image sensors

A visualization instrument comprising a display support component removably coupled to a component insertable into a target space. The insertable component includes a camera providing images of the target space. The images are presented in a display device supported by the display support component. The insertable component may be discarded after a permitted number of uses.

A camera for capturing an image of an object, for example an eye. The camera has at least two light sources and an image-sensing system having two image sensors. A multiple branch optical system transmits outgoing light from the light sources to the object, and transmits incoming light from the object to the image-sensing system. The multiple branch optical system includes an autofocusing element such as a variable power optical element that varies the focus of the incoming light. There is also an image display. There is a controller that controls the operation of the light sources, controls acquisition of images by the image-sensing system, and controls the display of images on the image display. The controller activates an autofocus light source and uses the resulting captured image to automatically adjust the image exposure parameters. The controller automatically adjusts the autofocusing element to improve the image focus, and then activates the second light source and acquires one or more images of the object while the second light source is activated.

Portable retinal camera and image acquisition method

A system for holding a slide. The system includes a housing having a side wall and a top. The top includes a recess surrounded by an outer rim. The system also includes an inlet port in communication with the recess and an elevating mechanism capable of receiving the slide and for raising the slide toward the top of the housing to engage the slide with the outer rim to form an analytical cavity. Together these elements form an analytical cavity in which the assay may be performed.

Method of holding a slide cassette for fluidic injection

The present invention provides a liquid handling system capable of automated dispensing and reformatting operations by virtue of a quick-release cannula array mounting system that permits cannula arrays to be changed automatically by the system or manually by a user. Automated changing of the cannula array is carried out by relative movement of the dispensing head and the sample support surface to deliver the attached cannula array to a storage location, releasing the array from the dispensing head, and attaching a new cannula array. Relative movement between the dispensing head and sample support surface in at least two dimensions increases flexibility of the system and makes self-loading of the cannula array practical. The system provides advantages in time and accuracy of cannula array changeover procedures. The automated cannula array changeover capability permits automated wellplate reformatting procedures, which can be performed quickly and accurately.

Slide cassette for fluidic injection

A unitary removable shield, serving the same function as a film or coating of electrically conductive material applied over the conductive cavity of a universally adaptable corona generating or charging device, is inserted into the cavity to adsorb and desorb nitrogen oxide species produced by negative corona. The unitary removable shield has a generally U-shaped cross-sectional configuration which fits within the cavity. The shield may be retained in the housing by engaging and conforming to the shape of the conductive cavity in a tight frictional fit so as to make electrical contact with the conductive cavity. The shield may also be retained in the housing by tabs or pressure-loadable clips which engage portions of the housing.
