Improved low smoking composition and method for cold forming metal parts is disclosed. The composition contains water, block copolymer of ethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide and which copolymer has a molecular weight of from about 1800 to about 2900, a sulfo-chlorinated fatty acid, potassium hydroxide and a compound having the following structure: ##STR1## wherein R is a C.sub.10 -C.sub.20 aliphatic group and the total of z, x and y are such that the compound is water soluble. The composition also has utility as a lubricant for plain bearings and ways.

Low smoking composition and method for cold heading operations

A metalworking liquid having utility as a recycleable general purpose cutting and grinding coolant contains a major amount of aqueous solution of a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and having a molecular weight of about 1800-2900, and an amount of both an alkanolamine cinnamate and a boron amine complex effective to inhibit corrosion. Also the liquid generally contains a germicide, an anti-foaming agent and a pH control agent. At an elevated temperature said liquid undergoes a phase separation in which most of the foregoing materials do not remain in the contaminated water which then can be discarded. The remaining mixture can be diluted with clean water and reused.

Improved method of coldworking a metal workpiece involves using a low smoking lubricating composition containing certain amounts of water, potassium nitrite, potassium soap of a sulfurized fatty acid, glycerine, defoaming agent and a block copolymer of ethylene oxide grafted on a polypropylene oxide which copolymer has both a molecular weight range and contains an amount of ethylene oxide content sufficient to cause the composition to remain homogeneous between ambient temperature and the composition's boiling temperature.

A low smoking lubricating composition for cold forming metal contains certain amounts of water, potassium nitrite, potassium soap of a chlorinated fatty acid, potassium soap of a sulfurized fatty acid, glycerine, defoaming agent and a block copolymer of ethylene oxide grafted on a polypropylene oxide which copolymer has a suitable molecular weight range and contains a sufficient amount of ethylene oxide to cause the composition to remain homogeneous between ambient temperature and the composition's boiling temperature.

Low smoking lubricating composition for cold heading operations

Testing apparatus and method for use in evaluating thermal stability of quenching oil wherein a relatively small quantity of the oil contacts a metallic heating element maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree.-1500.degree.F. The contacting oil comes from a relatively large amount of oil and just prior to contact it is at a temperature lower than the flash point of the oil. Operation is continuous and substantially compresses testing time. Following the testing an oil sample can be chemically tested to determine its degree of degradation which is an indication of its thermal stability.
