This relates to the provision of the pour spout portion of a blow molded plastic bottle with a dripless lip. In one form, the terminal end of the pour spout is internally reamed at an angle so as to terminate in an exterior sharp edge, after which the resultant tapered end portion of the pour spout is engaged by a rotating tool which frictionally heats the plastic engaged thereby and progressively turns over the sharp edge through an angle on the order of 180.degree. to provide the desired dripless lip. In another form, the pour spout portion of the container neck finish is provided with an integrally molded outwardly directed hollow rib which lies in a sloping plane. The rib extends only partially about the circumference of the pour spout. The pour spout is then trimmed at an angle to the axis of the pour spout and parallel to the plane of the rib so as to provide for a pour lip of limited circumferential extent and which pour lip, depending upon the plane of trimming may terminate in a sharp dripless lip. This latter container is provided with a special closure which includes a hollow plug portion and progressively engages in the trimmed pour spout and forms a seal therewith.

Container with dripless spout and method of forming same

This relates to the provision of a container having as an integral part thereof a separate pickup tube so that the neck finish of the container has the usual mouth together with a pickup tube mouth. A conventional spray pump has the vent and pickup passage portion thereof replaced by a replacement assembly which will interlock with the container neck finish between the two mouths in a manner to orient the pump with respect to the container. The replacement assembly includes a combined vent and pickup member and a separately formed backup disc which are interlocked relative to one another for selectively positioning the backup disc with respect to the combined vent and pickup member and thus with respect to the pump. The backup disc, in turn, has projecting legs which interlock with the container neck finish. The backup disc has several possible positions with respect to the combined vent and pickup member.

Pump replacement assembly

Method of forming a pour spout portion of a blow molded plastic bottle with a dripless lip. In one form, the terminal end of the pour spout is internally reamed at an angle so as to terminate in an exterior sharp edge, after which the resultant tapered end portion of the pour spout is engaged by a rotating tool which frictionally heats the plastic engaged thereby and progressively turns over the sharp edge through an angle on the order of 180.degree. to provide the desired dripless lip. In another form, the pour spout portion of the container neck finish is provided with an integrally molded outwardly directed hollow rib which lies in a sloping plane. The rib extends only partially about the circumference of the pour spout. The pour spout is then trimmed at an angle to the axis of the pour spout and parallel to the plane of the rib so as to provide for a pour lip of limited circumferential extent and which pour lip, depending upon the plane of trimming may terminate in a sharp dripless lip. This latter container is provided with a special closure which includes a hollow plug portion and progressively engages in the trimmed pour spout and forms a seal therewith.

Method of forming a container with dripless spout

This relates to a labeller for applying simultaneously two labels to a dual cavity mold half. The labeller is especially constructed to receive a pair of labels from a pair of adjacent label magazines and then move one of the labels towards the other so as to reduce the overall width of the pair of labels. This permits the pair of labels to be moved between a pair of mold halves within the limited space available and thereafter be rotated for alignment with the dual cavities of the mold half for positioning within the dual cavities. Basically speaking, the labeller includes a support member having mounted thereon a pair of carriers for separate movement towards and away from one another. The carriers are moved such that one normally remains fixed after a label is picked up by pickup heads carried thereby while the other carrier is moved towards the first carrier so as to move the labels together. The labeller is mounted in offset relation away from the mold half which is to receive the labels so that the labels may now be swung into alignment with the cavities of the mold half by pivoting the labeller. After this occurs, both carriers are actuated so as to separate the labels and to align the labels with the mold cavities, after which the labeller is advanced towards the mold cavities to position the labels within the respective mold cavities.

In-mold labellers for a dual cavity mold

This relates to a label separator which is operative to separate a foremost label from a stack of labels in advance of such label being picked by a picker so as to assure that only one label is picked at a time and that the other labels in a stack of labels will not be disturbed. One end or edge portion of a foremost label is displaced relative to the remainder of the stack and after a gap has been formed between the displaced label and the next adjacent label in the stack, a blade enters in between these two labels so as to separate completely the foremost label from the remaining labels in the stack. The apparatus which effects the initial displacement has associated therewith a label support whereby the displaced label remains supported in its original alignment for reception by the picker.

Label separator

This relates to a label applicator for applying labels to mold cavities of rotating mold units. The label applicator is fixed relative to moving mold units and includes an extensible fluid motor which carries a pick-up head or suction head for moving the suction head in a straight line direction and return. The extensible fluid motor is carried by a shaft for oscillation between a label pick-up position and a label deposit position. The extensible fluid motor is carried by a bracket which, in turn, is carried by a shaft of a rotary actuator which is constructed to oscillate between two fixed positions which are spaced apart a preselected angular distance. There is incorporated with the rotary actuator a decelerator for rapidly, yet smoothly, decelerating rotation of the bracket carrying the extensible fluid motor. Suitable sensor means are provided for timing the actuation of the label applicator in accordance with the position of a mold cavity into which a label is to be placed.

In-mold labeler

This relates to a labeller for applying labels to the cavities of mold halves of a rotating blow molding machine whereby when a parison is blow molded within each mold thereof to form a bottle or like hollow article, each such article will be provided with at least one and preferably two labels. The labeller is provided with pick-up heads to pick up labels from two opposed hoppers and then move the labels in between the paths of rotation of mold halves and with proper timing advance the labels into the mold half cavities and discharge them on the walls of the mold cavities. Control circuitry is provided for the automatic operation of the labeller whereby not only can the labeller operate without interference with the moving mold halves, but also accurately position the labels within the cavities.
