A television converter system () comprises a receiver () for receiving a transmission signal from a transmission signal source. A processor () in the converter is capable of executing a plurality of independently executable application programs. A first one of the plurality of programs has a focused execution state. The remaining one or more application programs have a defocused execution state. The processor generates an application program output signal from the application program that currently has the focused execution state. An output provides either the transmission signal or the application program output signal for display on a television display. An input is received, requesting a transfer of focus from the first one of the plurality of programs to a second one of the plurality of application programs. The focus is transferred from the first application program to the second one of the plurality of programs for display on the television display.

A method for interactive delivery of multimedia content includes accepting interactive multimedia content encoded in a multiplexed data stream, the stream includes segments that at least some include control data for presentation of the content. The method also includes receiving requests from one or more terminals, at least some of the requests identifies particular segments of the multiplexed data stream, and transmitting identified segments of the multiplexed data stream to the terminals in response to the received requests.

Delivering interactive content to a remote subscriber

A television system allows viewers to access a number of different groups of television content, or 'service aggregates.' A portal interface for each group provides a direct means for the viewer to navigate between members of a service aggregate, without necessarily having to accesses a global program guide for the television system. The groups of television content can be formed from various criteria including forming the groups based on business rules.
