Bromine doping of silica glass is demonstrated. Bromine doping can be achieved with SiBras a precursor. Bromine doping can occur during heating, consolidation or sintering of a porous silica glass body. Doping concentrations of bromine increase with increasing pressure of the doping precursor and can be modeled with a power law equation in which doping concentration is proportional to the square root of the pressure of the doping precursor. Bromine is an updopant in silica and the relative refractive index of silica increases approximately linearly with doping concentration. Bromine can be used as a dopant for optical fibers and can be incorporated in the core and/or cladding regions. Core doping concentrations of bromine are sufficient to permit use of undoped silica as an inner cladding material in fibers having a trench in the refractive index profile. Co-doping of silica glass with bromine and chlorine is also demonstrated.

According to some embodiments, the optical fiber comprises: (i) a core having a first index of refraction n; (ii) a cladding surrounding the core and having a second index of refraction n, such that n&#x3e;n, wherein cladding has at two sets of stress rods extending longitudinally through the length of the optical fiber, wherein the two sets of stress rods have CTE coefficients and/or softening points different from one another and different from that of cladding.

Optical fiber with differential birefringence mechanism

A device for treating fluids, such as automotive exhaust gases is provided, as well as a method of manufacturing such a device. The device provides a honeycomb structure, a matrix of ceramic walls that defines a plurality of parallel, fluid-conducting cells oriented along an axis, arranged in a stacked or discontinuous configuration between an inlet and outlet, where adjacent layers of honeycomb structure are separated by layers of air spaces. Each matrix layer has opposing faces that defines the inlets and outlets of the cells, and a peripheral portion or peripheral region including an outer skin. The peripheral portions or peripheral regions of adjacent stacked ceramic layers are mutually contiguous to prevent fluid flowing through the stacked ceramic layers from leaking between said outer skins.

A method for generating a linear single-polarization output beam comprises providing an optically active linearly birefringent and linearly dichroic fiber for propagating light and having a single polarization wavelength range and a gain bandwidth; optically pumping the optically active linearly birefringent and linearly dichroic fiber for obtaining fluorescence within the gain bandwidth; and aligning the single-polarization wavelength range to overlap a desired spectral region of the gain profile.

Disclosed is an optical fiber having a silica-based core and a silica-based cladding, the core comprising germania, and oxides of an alkali metal and phosphorous. By appropriately selecting the concentration of alkali metal and phosphorous oxides, fibers exhibiting low attenuation and low hydrogen aged attenuation may be obtained. In a preferred embodiment, the alkali metal oxide is potassium oxide (KO).

An optical-fiber-based light source that generates light via third-harmonic (TH) generation is disclosed. The light source includes a pump light source that provides pump light having a fundamental mode of wavelength &#x3bb;. The light source also includes an optical fiber optically coupled to the pump light source. The optical fiber's core refractive index profile has (i) a central region with a refractive index value &#x394;, (ii) a first annular region immediately surrounding the central region and having a refractive index value &#x394;, and (iii) a second annular region immediately surrounding the first annular region and having a refractive index value &#x394;. The optical fiber satisfies the conditions &#x394;&#x3c;&#x394;and &#x394;&#x3c;&#x394;, and max{&#x394;,&#x394;}&#x2212;&#x394;&#x3e;1.2%. The pump light produces TH-generated light having a higher-order mode of wavelength &#x3bb;=(1/3)&#x3bb;and that is outputted at the optical fiber output end. The pump light fundamental mode overlaps the TH-generated-light higher order mode over the length of the optical fiber to provide a conversion efficiency of 1% or greater.

Single polarization and polarization maintaining optical fibers and system utilizing same

An optical fiber that includes a central core having a maximum dimension (A) greater than a minimum dimension (B), preferably with an aspect ratio greater than 1.5, the fiber having at least one air hole positioned on opposite sides of the central core and extending along the fiber's length wherein the fiber supports a single polarization mode within an operating wavelength band. The fiber may be coupled to optical components in systems to provide single polarization in the band. A method for manufacturing the fiber is also provided.

Disclosed is an optical fiber () having a centermost laterally-elongated core () having a short dimension (a), a long dimension (b) and a first refractive index (n), a moat () surrounding the central laterally-elongated core, the moat () having a second refractive index (n), an outer dimension (c) and an outer dimension (d), and a cladding () surrounding the moat (), the cladding () having a third refractive index (n), wherein n&#x3e;n&#x3e;n, a ratio of b/a is between 1.5 and 5.0, and a ratio of d/a is between 2.0 and 7.0.
