A power capacitor with a plurality of section windings stacked within a housing is provided with an interconnection and fusing arrangement in which insulative spacer elements extending from between adjacent sections support a common electrical bus and an insulative locater element. Fuse wires attached to ends of the section windings extend around an edge of the locater element to the bus and are maintained thereby in spaced relation to avoid interaction between neighboring fuses when one clears.

A power capacitor and method of making it employs the technique of stacking capacitor sections together in an enclosure of which each section includes rolled electrode foils and dielectric layers of which at least one of the electrodes has a rolled edge resulting in a greater thickness in that portion of the section. In order to permit thorough impregnation of the section, the winding tension is deliberately made loose and the initially resulting section is insufficiently tight to retain conductive tabs reliably in contact with the foil electrodes. The stacked sections have, however, between them in the body portion intermediate the rolled edges, one or more sheets of material that compress the body portion and insure reliable pressure contact thereat while not interfering with the impregnation of the fluid throughout the section.

Power capacitor structure and method of assembly

Power capacitors with a wide electrode and a narrow electrode and a composite dielectric including a first portion adjacent the narrower electrode that is of higher dielectric constant and/or lower resistivity than the portion adjacent the wider electrode. The first portion may be a porous material whose impregnation with a suitably chosen dielectric fluid results in the desired electrical properties. In such structures the narrower electrode preferably has rounded and smooth edges such as by folding. The wide and narrow electrodes may each comprise one of the externally connected capacitor electrodes. Alternatively, the wider electrode may be electrically floating and arranged between dielectrics and a second narrower electrode in a symmetrical arrangement with the two narrower electrodes serving as the externally connected capacitor electrodes.

Capacitor structures with improved electrical stress capability

A capacitor is disclosed of layers of metal foil alternating with insulating sheets impregnated with a dielectric fluid. The dielectric fluid comprises isopropyl biphenyl of which at least about 55% by weight is the meta isomer. The dielectric fluid forms a glassy, amorphous phase at low temperatures rather than a crystalline solid.

A capacitor is disclosed of layers of metal foil alternating with insulating sheets impregnated with a dielectric fluid. The dielectric fluid comprises a mixture of 80 to 99% by weight mono-ethylated, mono-propylated, or mono-butylated biphenyl, biphenyl oxide, or biphenyl methane and about 1 to about 20% by weight di-ethylated, di-propylated, or di-butylated biphenyl, biphenyl oxide, or biphenyl methane.
