The present invention combines point light sources in combination with a light guide element and light redirecting elements into a system which can emit light across one or more extended surfaces of the light guide and may be designed to be able to emit light uniformly across the extended surfaces. The system comprises one or more light-emitting elements and a light guide in which are defined one or more voids. The light-emitting elements are optically coupled to the light guide by positioning them adjacent to a surface of the light guide, or by positioning them proximal to one or more of the voids. One or more light-emitting elements can be optically coupled to one void such that they emit light into the light guide substantially through that void and not through any other void of the one or more voids. Optically coupled to the light guide are a plurality of light redirecting elements for altering of the propagation of light through the light guide, thereby enabling light to be emitted from the surface of the light guide in a desired pattern, for example in a uniform illumination pattern.

The invention provides a general illumination luminaire comprising one or more adjustable light modules. In particular, the luminaire generally comprises one or more light modules, each one of which comprising one or more light-emitting elements, and optionally comprising a heat sink in thermal contact therewith and output optics for managing light output from the one or more light emitting elements. In general, the light modules are adjustably coupled to the luminaire via a coupling structure that provides one or more adjustment mechanisms for adjusting the orientation of the light modules for adjusting an output directionality of the luminaire, while substantially maintaining the spatial profile of the luminaire.

The present invention provides a modular panel lighting apparatus comprising a multi layer power board and one or more lighting modules. The power board is a compound structure of one or more electrically conductive layers which are separated by one or more electrically insulating layers. The power board is configured to receive one or more lighting modules and can provide electrical, mechanical and thermal function adequate to meet a desired functionality of the lighting apparatus. A lighting module comprises one or more light-emitting elements operatively attached to a connector element that has one or more electrical contact portions. By inserting the connector element into the power board, the lighting module can be mounted anywhere on the face of the power board. When appropriately inserted into the power board, the one or more electrical contact portions of the connector element can establish selective electrical contact with the conductive layers of the power board and can secure the lighting module in place.

The present invention provides a light source comprising one or more light-emitting elements, one or more photosensors and, a photosensor light guide, such as, for example, a substantially planar light guide. The photosensor light guide is generally configured to capture and guide some of the light emitted from the one or more light-emitting elements to one or more photosensors optically coupled thereto, the light sensed thereby being useable as a basis for controlling the respective outputs of the one or more light-emitting elements.

The light-emitting module according to the present invention comprises a heat dissipation element, a substrate for example a metal core printed circuit board (MCPCB), or FR4 board which is coupled to one or more light-emitting elements and provides a means for operative connection of the light-emitting elements to a source of power. The substrate is positioned such that it is thermally coupled to the heat dissipation element. The light-emitting module further comprises a housing element which matingly connects with the heat dissipation element, wherein the housing element may further comprise an optical element integrated therein for manipulation of the light generated by the one or more light-emitting elements.

The present invention provides a sealed housing unit and a method for its manufacture, wherein the sealed housing unit can protect light-emitting elements and the connected electronic circuitry from moisture. The sealed housing unit comprises a thermally conductive base onto which an array of light-emitting elements is mounted. A frame is sealingly connected to the thermally conductive base circumferentially enclosing the array of light-emitting elements and connected circuitry. An optically transmissive panel sufficiently sized to span the area defined by the frame, is sealingly connected to the frame to form a sealed cavity enclosing the array of light-emitting elements and the connected circuitry. The light-emitting elements can be electrically activated via electrical wires provided through one or more apertures within the thermally conductive base or the frame. Each aperture comprises a form of sealing means which suppresses the penetration of moisture.

A lighting structure for intensely illuminating a narrow linear region. A light source emits light into an end of a hollow, elongate light guide. A longitudinal slit light-emitting aperture extends through an external wall of the light guide. A lens is mounted in the aperture. The lens bears a plurality of prisms which extend substantially perpendicular to the slit, on an inwardly directed face of the lens. The lens may be formed of a film material. A mechanism is provided to maintain the lens flat. A diffuser mounted outwardly of the lens bears a plurality of thin striations extending transversely, relative to the longitudinal slit aperture.
