A spring finger ply down for a tire building machine comprising an annular array of spring fingers, an annular support for the fingers and a constrictable clamp for securing each finger to the support at an axial interference between each finger and the support. The constrictable clamp includes an elastic band stretched circumferentially around the fingers and/or a clamping ring of relatively inextensible material that is adjustably constricted or cinched around the fingers or, if used, the elastic band for holding rigidly or relatively rigidly the fingers to the support. The elastic band is locally radially deformable to permit radial release of the axial interference for easy insertion and removal of a finger without disturbing adjacent fingers.

Finger ply down for tire building machine

A tire building machine and method employing a tire building drum for receiving at least one ply of tire material having an edge overhanging an axial end of the drum, a bladder turn-up mechanism extending axially outwardly from the drum, an annular array of radially contractible ply-down fingers movable axially to and from a position encircling the overhanging ply edge, and an axially movable ring device operative first to effect radial contraction of the ply-down fingers to turn the ply edge down over the end of the drum, then to set a tire bead against the turned down ply edge at the end of the drum, and then to push the bladder of the turn-up mechanism when inflated to cause the ply edge to be progressively wrapped around the bead and then over the drum. In addition to a bead setting ring and a ply-down finger camming ring, the ring mechanism includes a contoured bladder control ring operative axially to push and radially to restrain the bladder, developed pressure in the bladder being reduced after contact is made with the control ring and then held at reduced pressure to allow the control ring to force the bladder to wrap around the bead and roll over the drum thereby to continue progressive wrapping of the ply edge around the bead and then over the drum with a bulge in the bladder forming in front of the axially inwardly moving control ring. Thereafter, the pressure in the bladder is further reduced, particularly in the case of long ply locks, to continue rolling of the bladder at the bulged portion to provide maximum ply lock with relatively low pressure sustained in the bladder. Finally, the bladder is reinflated while simultaneously retracting the control ring.

Tire building method

A tire building machine and method characterized by the employment of a rigid annular bead support at each end of and coaxial with the axis of a tire building drum for holding a tire bead in round and centered to the drum axis during bead placement, after bead placement and during a subsequent ply turn-up operation. The bead support preferably is in the form of a precision machined register ring preferably supported independently of the drum and having a radially outer bead support surface which extends slightly axially beyond a shoulder end face of the drum in radially inwardly offset relation to such end face. During bead placement and/or limited axial outward movement of the register ring, the register ring serves to wipe and firmly stitch interposed ply material to the inner diameter of the tire bead. During such wiping action, the bead may be axially held in place by an inflating turn-up bladder or by a bead setter utilized to set the bead at the drum end.

Tire building machine and method

A tire building machine of the bead set, ply down, and dual bladder turn-up type includes a bladder clamping system which may be used greatly to broaden the size range capability of existing tire building machines without affecting or replacing a substantial portion of the bladder clamping system or adjacent machinery such as the ply down assembly. Thus, by maintaining an inventory of a reduced number of parts, a machine may more easily be converted to manufacture sizes of tires beyond its standard. This is accomplished by changing the configuration in clamping rings and front nose of the outer bladder only.

A belt, band or other tire component folding machine and method are characterized by a rotatable and expandable drum comprising a substantially rigid cylindrical deck having a precisely formed peripheral deck edge and an inflatable bladder assembly positioned slightly axially and radially inwardly subjacent the deck edge which cooperate to define a precise fold line along the deck edge at which a ply or belt band or the like is precisely and sharply folded. Preferably, dual inflatable bladders are employed at each end of the deck, one bladder being contiguous to the other and arranged on inflation to walk up the precisely formed and contoured deck edge to turn up the overhanging band end, and the other arranged to push the first bladder axially inwardly to complete the fold of the band flat upon itself. A preferred form of deck comprises a plurality of readily replaceable segments which are mounted in a self-aligning manner on a radially expandable and rotatable hub. Each segment includes a pair of interfitting outer deck sections which are movable axially of the drum towards and away from each other to expand and contract the width of the deck in precise increments. Various forms of the deck further comprise spring gap shields or elastic gap spanning bands which circumscribe the deck at the deck edges. The various components are readily interchangeable with components of different sizes and adjustable to accommodate different sizes of tire components.

Belt folding machine and method

A tire building machine including an axially contractible and expandable drum is characterized by an annularly continuous center deck for the drum having a rigid, axially segmented yet continuous, generally cylindrical deck surface. The center deck includes a center support, end supports, and two symmetrically arranged sets of telescoping rings extending respectively between the center support and opposite end supports. The telescoping rings are axially expandable as the end supports move away from each other to form such rigid, axially continuous deck surface and axially collapsible into or upon one another as the end supports move toward each other. Each ring of the set has flanged ends forming both a stop and an annular sliding bearing surface for the adjacent ring. The rings and their flanges may be precisely formed so that each intermediate ring of the ring set has four annular supporting and sliding surfaces, contributing to the overall rigidity of the deck. Tire components may be applied and firmly stitched directly on the deck surface or an axially elastic sleeve may be employed. The sleeve, secured to each end support, has a substantially cylindrical outer diameter and an inner diameter conforming to the deck surface when axially expanded.

Axially collapsible and expandable tire building drum

The tire building machine comprises a tire building drum or shaper, annular bladders adjacent each end and a bead setter and bladder pusher mechanism movable axially of the drum selectively to set a tire bead in proper position and to push and effectively roll the bladder when inflated to cause the ply edges of the tire to be wrapped about the bead without air entrapment and stitched securely. Such mechanism includes a bead setting and pushing ring mounted for axial movement and hydraulic actuators are provided for effecting such movement. The ring has a flat face, a short axially extending radially inner annular surface or shelf for restricting expansion of a portion of the bladder rearwardly of the face when inflated thereunder, and a rounded inner peripheral edge or bead projecting beyond the shelf which grips the bladder when inflated to prevent relative sliding movement of the bladder and ring during bladder push. There is further provided a movable stop for precisely locating bead set and bladder pick-up positions of the ring and bead clamps for holding the tire bead to the ring during the bead set operation.

A tire building machine has a dual bladder ply turn-up mechanism including radially inner and outer annular bladders mounted on a radially stepped annular support. Each bladder is fully contour molded and has imbedded in its radially inner wall a plurality of circumferentially spaced flanged inserts adapted for connecting and positioning the bladder on the support. Each bladder further includes position stabilizers in the form of inelastic cinch bands which include openings through which the inserts extend and the outer bladder may also include an annular girdle to improve bladder rolling characteristics. Also provided is a one-piece manifolded bladder support which includes a radially stepped cylindrical support surface for the bladders and internal porting means for bladder inflation.

A modular tire building machine servicer for use with a tire component building drum is characterized by a plurality of stackable servicer modules stacked substantially along an arcuate path struck substantially about the axis of the drum, each module being capable of supplying and dispensing tire components to a tire building drum, such providing adaptability of the servicer for different applications, as well as facilitating loading and transportation of the same from one location to another, without changing the construction of the basic servicer module. Several banks of stacked servicer modules may be mounted on a shuttle module for multistation operation. Each servicer module has provision for supporting stock and liner take-up rolls and includes fixed and hingedly mounted component dispensing trays which when the modules are arcuately stacked, are all located proximate the tire building drum for application of components thereto. Each servicer module is easy to stack and width adjustable within each station with like side plates being interconnected at the distal ends of the outer legs of the side plates by adjustable telescoping beams which additionally provide for the interconnection of adjacent stacked modules. A simplified common drive is provided for the servicer modules which may be driven by the tire building machine or independently thereof. The servicer modules may also be provided with a plurality of optional modular components for flexibility in the ultimate design of the servicer without changing the basic modular unit.

Modular servicer

A tire building machine of the expandable bead lock type employs an elastomeric specially shaped radially expanding bead lock including a shaping and turning bladder which includes an air passage system therethrough. The elastomeric bead lock is confined for radial expansion in an annular outwardly opening chamber in the form of an isosceles trapezoid in radial section with the elastomeric bead lock being of similar configuration and expanded by direct application of air pressure within the chamber. The configuration of the annular chamber and the bead lock compensate for stretching of the bead lock upon enlargement. The edges of the bead lock at the axial sides of the chamber are undercut for flexibility while the walls of the chamber are specially coated to maintain the seal. The bead lock incorporates interconnected metallic segment side plates which not only limit the stroke of the moving seal but insure stability axially of the bead and provide the desired concentricity. The bladder is pressurized through an annular air passage system and a sealed conduit extending radially through the pressure chamber inside the bead lock.

A tire curing press and method are characterized by a center mechanism operative first to center the top bead of a green tire carcass with respect to the top mold section and then the bottom bead with respect to the bottom mold section, and to hold the beads centered and axially separated as the press closes to cause the beads to register and seat with the toe rings of the top and bottom mold sections simultaneously as the press closely approaches its closed condition. The center mechanism comprises top and bottom segmented annular clamping rings adapted to engage and shape the axial interior of the bead area of the tire and respective chuck assemblies including a multi-faceted linear cam and respective followers for each ring segment operative to collapse each alternate ring segment and then each other ring segment. The clamping rings achieve automatic loading, centering and unloading and may be used individually or paired in bladder or bladderless curing.

Tire press

A tire building machine comprises a number of modular packages which can be used interchangeably in single stage, or first stage tire component assembly. Some of the modular components are particularly useful in the manufacture of larger or truck type tires but can also be used in the automatic or semi-automatic production of smaller passenger size tires. One of the principal components is a carriage mounted device for transfer of components such as bands or belt and tread assemblies, or finished tires, which also functions as a bead setter and as a retractable two-position idle journal support for the non-driven end of the main shaft of the tire building drum or shaper. The shaft supports a wide variety of shapers or drums for single, first or second stage building. The device is mounted for movement to and from the shaper or drum and includes a support arm which moves in a circular arc to assume and maintain various positions during various periods in the machine cycle. For certain types of shapers, the device provides support and means for automatic removal and replacement of the outboard bead seal flange. A bead setter is supported on the device and is adjustable omnidirectionally to obtain concentricity and squareness and is also adjustable axially for accurate bead placement symmetrically about the axis centerline of the shaper or drum and thus the tire being built. A bead gripper, actuated by fluid power, automatically rotates clear of the bead flippers or apex and clamps the tire bead securely and squarely to ensure accurate bead placement while transferring the tire bead to its selected location. A retractable positive intermediate stop is employed to position the carriage of the device to perform its various functions. A wide variety of arrangements of the components may be employed performing various tire building processes for different types and sizes of tires.

Modular tire building machine

This invention relates generally as indicated to a servicer and more particularly to a servicer for supplying tire components to a building drum or shaper for the construction of tires, or more particularly for the construction of tire components such as belt and tread assemblies.

Servicer for a tire building drum

A tire building machine of the expandable bead lock type employs an elastomeric specially shaped radially expanding bead lock which includes an air passage system therethrough. The bead locks are expanded by a pneumatic tube which seats the bead lock against reentrant shoulder stops securing the bead locks in their expanded condition both precisely radially and axially with respect to the two centerlines of the machine. Such bead locks may be used in connection with an expandable axially fixed center deck for first stage operations or in connection with a substantially rigid axially expandable and contractible center deck for single stage operations. The bead locks may also be employed for second stage operations. For a single stage machine, the preferred form of center deck includes axially oppositely extending fingers which slide in respective slots in the center support forming a substantially rigid working surface. In connection with single and first stage operations, the bead locks may include integrally formed shaping bladders which are inflated through the air passage system in the bead locks. An additional bladder may be employed at each end of the machine cooperating with the bladder formed integrally with the bead locks for turning tire components about the beads and for assembling components such as sidewalls to the carcass when in toroidal shape. The bladders are specially constructed and molded so that the components may be wrapped or applied tangentially and sequentially from the bead outwardly to avoid distortion. Components of the machine, whether used as a single stage, first stage, or second stage machine are common.
