A multiplex extender 26 for permitting discrete I/O devices 34, not individually equipped to decode multiplex channel addresses, to be multiplexed on a time division multiplexed control bus 10. The multiplex extender 26 is connected intermediate the time division multiplexed control bus 10 and a branch line 30 and includes a multiplex channel address decoder 78, a data disconnect switch 82 and a branch line controller 90. The multiplex channel address decoder 78 is selectively programmed to one of the multiplex channel addresses of the time division multiplexed control bus 10. The multiplex channel address decoder 78 produces one or more output signals, each being determined by the multiplex channel address which has most recently been decoded. The data disconnect switch 82, connected in series with a data line of the time division multiplexed control bus 10 and a data line of the branch line 30, either passes or blocks the flow of data between the time division multiplexed control bus 10 and the discrete I/O devices 34 in response to the output signal from the multiplex channel decoder 78. A data latch/repeater 86, also connected to the data line of the time division multiplexed control bus 10, selectively stores data from the time division multiplexed control bus 10 or repeats previously stored data to and the discrete I/O devices 34 A branch line controller 90 transmits the previously stored data from the data latch/repeater 86 to the branch line 30 when the data disconnect switch 82 is blocking data frames from the time division multiplexed control bus 10. The multiplex extender 26 can also incorporate a heartbeat pass-through/repeater 94 for passing a heartbeat pulse to the discrete I/O devices 34 during each data frame.

A data error detection method for a bit, byte or word oriented network wherein a protected data unit 46 and an associated data check unit 50 are addressed to a particular field device located on the network, 10 or 26. The data check unit 50 is derived in a particular manner either solely from the protected data unit 46 or from the protected data unit 46 and particular binary codes representing attributes of the network 10 or 26 and the field device sending the protected data unit 46. The particular configuration of the checking data unit 50 is such that the receiving field device or the host 22 can perform a bit-by-bit comparison of either the received protected data unit 46 or data check unit 50 with a protected data unit 46 or data check unit 50 derived in the particular manner by the receiving host 22 or field device 14 or 18.

A control system (FIGS. 2, 3, 5, 6) and method in which multiple levels, or stages (128, 130, 132), of logical decisions are made by selectively feedforwarding output signals (356) from control modules (72) to the inputs of other modules (80), preferably through use of control modules (233) with selective feedforwarding circuits (239, 240) to logically combine during selected synchronous time slots (351) of a synchronous clock signal (FIG. 11) the result of a plurality of nonconcurrent input signals from a plurality of input devices (28, 30, 32, 34) to control an output device (26).

A photoelectrical sensor (10) provided with a multistaged, filtered amplifier circuit (16) for amplifying voltage pulses from a phototransducer (12) and a filtering I/V converter (14) includes three voltage amplifier stages (28, 30, 32) and three respectively associated band pass filters (34, 36 and 38) for cascade connecting the amplifier stages (28, 30, 32) between the phototransducer (12) and the detector circuit (18) and accumulating attenuation of response to signals at a frequency equal to the frequency of full wave rectified AC line voltage to maximize desensitization of the photoelectrical sensor (10) to AC powered ambient light fluctuations while broadening the pass band at the low frequency end for maximum response to the desired signal. A gain control circuit (40) is associated with the first stage amplifier (28), while a temperature compensation circuit (42) adjusts the gain of a second stage amplifier stage (30) to correct for temperature variations.
