High performance filters comprise a basestock impregnated with an aqueous based poly(vinyl alcohol) graft emulsion copolymer as binder. The aqueous based poly(vinyl alcohol) graft emulsion copolymer binder is prepared by graft polymerizing one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solution in which at least 30% of the total poly(vinyl alcohol) is 70 to 97 mol % hydrolyzed.

Saturant binder systems for high performance air and oil filters

The wet strength of cellulosic paper is improved by adding the combination of an amine-functional poly(vinyl alcohol) and a cellulose reactive size which is a 4 or 5 membered cyclic ester or anhydride having alkyl or alkenyl substituents of 4 or more carbon atoms. The amine-functional polymer is preferably a hydrolyzed copolymer of vinyl acetate and N-vinylformamide in which about 1-25 mole % of the monomer units are incorporated N-vinylformamide, and the cellulose reactive size is preferably an alkyl ketene dimer or an alkenyl succinic anhydride. A paper product is provided having improved wet-strength and containing normally 0.05 to 4.0 wt % based on the dry pulp of the additive amine-functional polymer and cellulose reactive size. The particular compounds which represent the polymer and the size cooperate to provide improvements in wet-tensile strength for paper which could not have been foreseen from the effects of either material acting alone.

An improved papermaking process has been developed to enhance the properties of the resultant paper or paper-type products. The process involves adding a polyvinyl alcohol/vinylamine copolymer along with a crosslinking agent at the dry end step of a conventional papermaking process. Improvements in the properties of the resultant paper products are observed, especially at low levels of copolymer addition.

Aqueous emulsions containing an ethylene-vinyl chloride (EVCl) copolymer and tetramethylol glycoluril are described for use as binder compositions suitable for application onto nonbonded filter paper. The emulsions are prepared by incorporating 4 to 10 wt % tetramethylol glycoluril, based on the total weight of the emulsion copolymer, into an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer consisting essentially of 65 to 90 wt % vinyl chloride, 5 to 35 wt % ethylene and optionally, up to 10 wt % of a hydroxyalkyl- or carboxylic acid-containing functional comonomer. The polymerization is conducted in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 3 to 15 wt % polyvinyl alcohol. Filter paper impregnated with these emulsions maintain tensile strength and flexibility upon being subjected to hot oil.

Aqueous emulsions containing an ethylene-vinyl chloride (EVCl) copolymer and tetramethylol glycoluril are described for use as binder compositions suitable for application onto nonbonded filter paper. The emulsions are prepared by incorporating 4 to 10 wt % tetramethylol glycoluril, based on the total weight of the emulsion copolymer, into an aqueous disperson of a copolymer consisting essentially of 65 to 90 wt % vinyl chloride 5 to 35 wt % ethylene and optionally, up to 10 wt % of a hydroxyalkyl- or carboxylic acid-containing functional comonomer. The polymerization is conducted in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 3 to 15 wt % polyvinyl alcohol. Filter paper impregnated with these emulsions maintain tensile strength and flexibility upon being subjected to hot oil.

A nonwoven substrate impregnated with a vinyl acetate/ethylene/N-methylolacrylamide or vinyl chloride/ethylene/N-methylolacrylamide copolymer emulsion binder is cured by employing an acidic substance having a pKa of 1 to 2, sufficiently drying to volatilize a substantial amount of the water while not substantially cross-linking the copolymer binder and maintaining the dried nonwoven substrate at a temperature less than that for drying for a time sufficient to develop essentially full cure.

Nonwoven fibrous sheets bonded with polyvinyl alcohol, intended for use in pre-moistened condition as skin cleansing tissues, are folded and packaged in closed containers or in individual sealed water impervious envelopes; said packaged sheets being maintained in contact with a dilute aqueous solution of boric acid. The boric acid imparts improved wet tensile strength to the sheet during storage and use by the consumer but may be safely disposed of, after use, by flushing in plain water without danger of clogging the plumbing system. Instead of boric acid solution, one may employ for the indicated purpose a non-alkaline aqueous solution of a salt which acts as a precipitating or gelling agent for polyvinyl alcohol, said salt being one having an acid to neutral pH on hydrolysis.

The agent imparts improved wet tensile strength to the sheet during storage and use by the consumer but permits the sheet to be safely disposed of, after use, by flushing in plain water without danger of clogging the plumbing system.
