An electromagnetic fuel ram-injector and improved igniter apparatus, comprising a fuel injector, and a fuel igniter in series with the injector, to ignite fuel passing through the injector.

Fuel ram-injector and igniter improvements

An electromagnetic fuel ram-injector and an improved fuel ignitor are disclosed for independent as well as cooperative use. The injector includes the use of two opposing radially slotted disc armatures attached to a single tubular ram rod to supply fuel to the injector. The ignitor includes the use of heated wire in conjunction with ceramic to provide an ignition source.

The invention is a pulsed, hydraulically actuated fuel injector ignitor system for an internal combustion engine with combustion chambers and a fuel injector, comprising an outer shell containing a fuel inlet cavity, a fuel supply and scavenging chamber supplied with fuel from the inlet cavity through the rod bore of the injector rod, and a fuel pressure chamber, which is resupplied through check valve from the supply chamber after each injection has taken place. The pressure chamber has a poppet valve responsive to a predetermined fuel pressure in the pressure chamber, resulting from the intrusion of injector piston into the pressure chamber, thereby spraying fuel into the combustion chamber through a hot-throated venturi and igniting the fuel as it passes through venturi. Concentric open-ended cylinders form the control body assembly and are positioned between the base assembly and the fluid manifold head cap and having alternate open-ended cylinders in communication with sliding contact. All cylinders are supported by struts which are firmly attached to a rod. Electro-rheological fluid flows freely through the cylinders of the control body assembly until a high voltage is applied to cylinders, thus solidifying the electro-rheological fluid between cylinders and their adjacent ground potential cylinders. This produces hydraulic pressure in the inlet section of the fluid manifold head cap which forces the assembly and rod downward and piston into the pressure chamber. Removal of the solidifying voltage from cylinders returns the electro-rheological fluid to a liquid state, thereby stopping injection.

Pulsed hydraulically-actuated fuel injector ignitor system

In an internal combustion engine with combustion chambers (CC'S) (538), a fuel injector (FI) comprising an outer shell (628) containing a fuel supply cavity (FSC) (530) having an openable valve (546) for storing fuel, a control body assembly (CBA) (520) within the outer shell (628). A rod (512) extends from FSC through CBA along the length of the outer shell with piston (518) formed thereon. An internal bore (534) extends therethrough from the side of a closed end of rod (512) which is movable into the FSC for carrying fuel from the FSC to the CC. A rod supporting base assembly (562), responsive to a predetermined CC pressure increase causes rod (512) to enter FSC, closing valve (546) to cease fuel from entering FSC and exposing bore (534) to force the pressurized fuel in the FSC down bore into the CC. Concentric open ended cylinders (OEC'S) (510) are positioned between the CBA and the base assembly with alternate OEC'S (514) secured to CBA and the other OEC'S (516) secured to base assembly (562). An E-R mixture between FSC and base assembly becomes solidified between the OEC'S when proper voltage is applied thereacross. The CBA responds to the fluid E-R mixture and a certain CC pressure to enable rod (512) to enter FSC, forcing fuel down rod bore (534) into the CC, and responsive to the solid E-R mixture to stop movement of rod (512), thereby stopping fuel flow down rod bore (534) into CC (538).

Electronic controller for compression-actuated fuel injector system

An injector (10) for delivering fuel directly into an engine combustion chamber (11) in response to compression within the combustion chamber (11). The injector (10) has a housing (14) with an injector rod (22) slidably mounted within housing (14). Secured to the injector rod (22) is a primary piston (24), a metering spool (25), and a secondary piston (32). The metering spool (25) is located within a metering chamber (26) having a bypass chamber (50) in which is located two series of electrodes (60 and 62) which are connected to an electrical system which sequentially provides an electrical signal to the connector (56) as dictated by the needs of the engine. As the electrical signal is supplied to connector (56), an electro-rheological fluid (64) contained within the metering chamber (26) is converted from a liquid to a substantially solid condition, thereby limiting the travel of the metering spool (25) and the secondary piston (32). Thus, a predetermined, measured amount of fuel is delivered from the supply chamber (36) into the combustion chamber (11) of the engine. The device (10) is provided with a glow plug (68) for firing the mixture within the combustion chamber (11).

Fuel injector

A telephone switching system for telephone trunk and subscriber lines that carry voice and associated supervisory information signals. The voice signals are received through one of a plurality of ports under the control of a port event processor, and are transferred through a switching arrangement under the control of a call processor for transmission through a second port. The supervisory information is received with the associated voice signals, and is sampled and stored in a port data store memory. The call processor can retrieve or modify the supervisory information stored in the port data memory store, and can store control information in the port data store. The port event processor enables the transfer of certain supervisory information from the port data store for transmission with the associated voice signals to the respective port. The port event processor also performs certain operations specified by the commands and supervisory information stored in the port data store memory. The port event processor and port data store memory both operate under control of timing signals from a timing signal generator. The timing generator generates timing signals of two frequencies. The port data store memory samples the sense supervisory information signals at a rate dependent upon the higher frequency timing signal, and the port event processor controls the operation of the respective ports in response to the lower frequency timing signal.

Sampled port data switching system employing interactive processors

A ring trip circuit adapted for use in a community office switching system that includes a call control processor and a port event processor. The call control processor and port event processor interact through a port storage unit that contains information corresponding to each telephone line connected to the switching system. The switching system also includes a ringing generator for transmitting ringing signals onto a telephone line to a called party. Windings for a common bridge relay connect in circuit with each telephone line and diodes shunt the windings so the relay responds only to signals of one polarity. The contacts of the common bridge relay, therefore, reflect the duty cycle of the signal through the common bridge relay and this duty cycle varies when the called party goes off-hook during a ringing burst. The common bridge relay produces a supervisory signal that is sampled and transferred, for each telephone line, to a corresponding port storage area. A single ring trip analyzer sequentially monitors each port storage means during a ringing operating to determine whether the supervisory signal indicates that the called instrument has been taken off-hook. When this occurs, the analyzer updates control information in a corresponding port storage area to control the state of a ring delay. The ring delay then opens and removes the ringing signal from the corresponding telephone line. The analyzer also detects off-hook status during intervals between successive ringing bursts and during normal operations when a subscriber lifts a telephone off-hook in order to place a call.
