A method is set forth for making polarizing glasses having high dichroic ratios by drawing relatively small silver-containing particles under relatively high stress and elongating such particles during the drawing process without rupturing the glass draw by coating the polarizing glass with a substantially low viscosity skin glass.

Drawing laminated polarizing glasses

A cell for generating electric energy is provided comprising a sealed container partitioned into anode and cathode chambers, said partition comprising an electrolyte/separator in the form of a bundle of hollow glass or ceramic fibers, fusion sealed together between their interstices adjacent at least one end thereof. Preferably, the ends of the fibers which project within the anode chamber are sealed closed whereas the opposite ends are in open communication with the cathode chamber. Preferred anode and cathode materials comprise an alkali metal such as sodium or potassium and sulfur respectively.

A first molten glass of one composition is caused to flow downwardly along converging flow paths of a forming member while simultaneously at least one other molten glass of a different composition is flown downwardly along outer surface portions of the first glass such that said glasses are in molten contact with one another during their downward travel and are then continuously formed into a composite or laminated glass sheet. The molten glasses are distributed to the forming member in such a manner as to provide substantially uniform thickness of the glass layers across the newly formed sheet, and various viscosity, glass flow rates and proportionate layer thicknesses may be obtained by varying the degree of tilt of the forming member.

Forming laminated sheet glass

A sheet of molten glass issuing from an overflow channel is supplied to the molten metal bath used in the formation of float glass. The overflow channel is positioned adjacent one end of such bath transversely of the longitudinal extent thereof, and the overflow channel is fed at one end thereof with homogeneous glass which has been thoroughly stirred and homogenized within a forehearth immediately adjacent the inlet end of such overflow channel, so that the resulting sheet may be attenuated without detrimental surface streak or ridges due to internal striae or cord which detrimentally affect the optical quality of the sheet.
