Techniques for facilitating improved power management for an implantable device are provided. In one example, an implantable device includes a telemetry circuit and a power management circuit. The telemetry circuit is configured to facilitate a telemetry session between the implantable device and an external device. The power management circuit is configured to connect a power supply to the telemetry circuit via a first current-limiting device based on a determination that the telemetry circuit satisfies a defined criterion. The power management circuit is also configured to connect the telemetry circuit to a second current-limiting device based on a determination that the telemetry circuit is connected to the first current-limiting device for a defined period of time.

Power management for an implantable device

An implantable medical device is provided having circuitry to control operation of the implantable medical device and a receiver configured to receive communication signals on an allocated band of a plurality of communication channels separated in frequency by a channel spacing. The receiver includes an oscillator and a signal source configured to apply a quench signal to the oscillator. The quench signal has a frequency corresponding to the channel spacing. The receiver is enabled to receive on all of the plurality of communication channels simultaneously by applying the quench signal.

Medical device communication system and method

A medical device communication system transmitter may include a resonator coupled to a local oscillator for stabilizing an operating frequency of the local oscillator. A control device of the transmitter receives an open-loop control signal, and the local oscillator and the control device are configured to generate a direct modulated radio frequency transmission signal in response to the open-loop control signal.

Unscheduled wireless communication with a medical device is achieved by operating a receiver of the medical device in a series of modes. Each mode provides an increasingly selective evaluation of received RF energy. The receiver, when operating in a first mode, is capable of detecting the presence of RF energy transmitted from a communicating device. The receiver, when operating in a second mode, consumes more energy than the first mode and analyzes the RF energy to determine whether it contains the appropriate type of modulation. When operating in a third mode, the receiver consumes more energy than the second mode, and operates the full receiver to begin communication with the communicating device. The receiver opens a communication session after the RF energy has passed the evaluation by the series of modes to receive an unscheduled communication.

System and method for unscheduled wireless communication with a medical device

Medical data is communicated from a transmitter of an external unit to a receiver of an implantable medical device. The transmitter generates a preamble signal having encoded configuration data that informs the receiver of configuration settings to be used in receiving the medical data. The receiver detects the preamble and validates a modulation pattern of the preamble. Configuration data is decoded from the preamble signal and the receiver configuration is adjusted to receive the medical data.

Constituents of a network of medical devices communicate according to a synchronous communication protocol. A constituent of the network is established as a conductor. Time slots are assigned to each constituent of the network other than the conductor. Information is communicated between the constituents of the network in the assigned time slots.

System and method for synchronous wireless communication with a medical device

A low power multiple channel receiver mixing architecture for detecting wake-up signals over multiple communication channels in sniff processing performed in an implantable medical device (IMD). The architecture includes a direct conversion real receiver configured to scan a selected center channel and a Weaver receiver configured in parallel to the direct conversion real receiver to simultaneously scan side channels, together simultaneously detecting whether a wake-up signal is being received over the center and side channels with minimal power consumption. The architecture further utilizes a falsing protection algorithm that reduces power consumption during sniff operations by inhibiting the sniffing of channels likely to provide a false indication of a wake-up signal based the presence of unwanted signals on those channels. The falsing protection algorithm restricts those channels from sniff processing likely to provide a false indication of a wake-up signal, such that sniff processing can aborted, prevented, limited or otherwise altered to conserve power consumption.

Low power multiple channel mixing architecture for detecting wake-up signals and related falsing protection algorithm

Data is communicated from a transmitter of an external unit to a receiver of an implantable medical device. The receiver of the implantable medical device operates in a wide band receiver mode to detect the transmission from the external unit and operates in a narrow band receiver mode to receive the data.

An implantable medical device ('IMD') configured in accordance with an example embodiment of the invention generally includes a housing, a connector header block coupled to the housing, a dielectric sheath located around at least a portion of the housing and/or around at least a portion of the header block, and a telemetry antenna located within the dielectric sheath. The antenna is configured to support far field telemetry with an external device such as a programmer. In one example embodiment, the antenna is configured as a balanced antenna having two separate antenna elements driven 180 degrees out of phase. Each of the antenna elements has a feed point on a perimeter edge of the IMD housing and a floating endpoint. A number of alternate embodiments are also provided.

Compact and conformal telemetry antennas for implantable medical devices

A body implantable medical apparatus includes circuitry for generating and transmitting a modulated analog data signal. A receiver receives and digitally demodulates the modulated analog signal. An analog-to-digital converting circuit produces an amplitude limited modulated digital signal corresponding to the modulated analog signal. The converting circuit includes an amplifier coupled to a receive antenna and a comparator having an input coupled to the amplifier and an output coupled to a digital demodulator. The digital demodulator demodulates the modulated digital signal to produce a digital information signal, such as a signal containing physiologic sensor data. The digital demodulator includes a digital delay line comprising a plurality of shift registers or, alternatively, a plurality of multiple-stage delay blocks each coupled to a tap selection device. The digital delay line includes an input coupled to an output of the converting circuit, an exclusive OR (XOR) gate having a first input coupled to an output of the digital delay line, and a conductor coupled between the input of the digital delay line and a second input of the XOR gate, such that delayed and non-delayed modulated digital signals are respectively applied to the first and second XOR gate inputs to produce a digital information signal at an output of the XOR gate. The digital demodulator may be implemented in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), in an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) or using a digital signal processor. A control circuit is coupled to the digital demodulator to adjust a rate at which the digital demodulator operates.

Digital delay line receiver for use with an implantable medical device

A receiving and filtering circuit includes an antenna, a demodulator circuit coupled to the antenna, and a digital median filter that removes high frequency content of a demodulated digital information signal to produce a filtered digital information signal corresponding to an analog data signal transmitted by a body implantable medical apparatus. The digital filter may include a multiple stage delay line coupled to a multiple tap selection device, a plurality of delay blocks coupled to a register, or a multiple stage delay line coupled to a voting unit. The voting unit produces a first binary output in response to a majority of delay line stages storing a first value, and produces a second binary output in response to a majority of delay line stages storing a second value. The digital filter may also comprise a digital signal processor. The digital filter may include a first filter block and a second filter block. The second filter block may be selectively activated or bypassed. The first filter block removes high frequency content of the digital information signal and the second filter block reduces high frequency noise at an edge of a data bit transition. A control circuit, coupled to the digital filter, provides for respective selection of data rate and frequency response characteristics of the digital filter. The digital filter may be implemented in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC).
