Embodiments predict biochemical recurrence (BCR) or metastasis by accessing a set of images of a region of tissue demonstrating cancerous pathology, including a tumor region and a tumor adjacent benign (TAB) region, the set of images including a first stain type image, and a second stain type image; segmenting cellular nuclei represented in the first and second image; generating a combined feature set by extracting at least one feature from each of a tumor region and TAB region represented in the first image, and a tumor region and TAB region represented in the second image, providing the combined feature set to a machine learning classifier; receiving, from the classifier, a probability that the region of tissue will experience BCR or metastasis; and generating a classification of the region of tissue as likely to experience BCR or metastasis, or unlikely to experience BCR or metastasis.

Predicting prostate cancer biochemical recurrence and metastasis with computer extracted features from tumor nuclei and benign regions

Methods, apparatus, and other embodiments associated with predicting prostate cancer (CaP) progression using tumor cell morphology features and benign region graph features are described. One example apparatus includes a set of logics that acquires an image of a region of tissue, detects and segments cells in the image, extracts a set of morphological features from cells in a first region in the image, constructs a graph of a localized cellular network in a second region of the image, extracts a set of graph features from the graph, generates a set of tumor plus adjacent features signature (TABS) features from the sets of graph features and the set of morphological features, and calculates the probability that the image is a progressor or non-progressor based, at least in part, on the set of TABS features. The first region may concern cancerous cells and the second region may concern benign cells.

Apparatus, methods, and other embodiments associated with objectively predicting biochemical recurrence (BCR) with cell orientation entropy (COrE) are described. One example apparatus includes a set of logics that associate directional disorder with a risk of biochemical recurrence in a tissue. A first logic detects a cell in the tissue, segments boundaries of the cell, and calculates a cell direction for the cell. A second logic constructs a localized sparsified subgraph whose nodes represent centroids of the cells, defines pairwise spatial relationships between the cells, and constructs a directional co-occurrence matrix based on the spatial relationships. A third logic derives second order statistical features from the co-occurrence matrix, and produces a BCR risk score as a function of the second order statistical features. The second order statistical features include the entropy of the directional organization of the cells.

Quantitatively characterizing disease morphology with cell orientation entropy

Apparatus, methods, and other embodiments associated with objectively predicting biochemical recurrence with co-occurring gland tensors in localized subgraphs are described. One example apparatus includes a set of logics that associate directional disorder with a risk of failure in a material. A first logic detects a fundamental unit of composition in the material, segments boundaries of the fundamental unit, and calculates a directional tensor for the fundamental unit. A second logic constructs a localized sparsified subgraph whose nodes represent centroids of the fundamental units, defines pairwise spatial relationships between the fundamental units, and constructs a directional co-occurrence matrix based on the spatial relationships. A third logic derives second order statistical features from the co-occurrence matrix, and produces a risk failure score as a function of the second order statistical features. The second order statistical features include the entropy of the directional organization of the fundamental units.

Quantitatively characterizing disease morphology with co-occurring gland tensors in localized subgraphs

A modular lighting system for mounting in the garage, under a cabinet, or on a wall area includes a LED light mounted in the housing and two battery operated detachable, removable flashlight assemblies mounted in the housing. The flashlight assembly includes a rechargeable battery; an electrical device, such as a male plug for interconnecting the battery and power source; and an electrical device for sensing power loss. The lighting system also includes a flashlight electrical connection in the housing, such as a plug receptacle, for connection to the male plug for supplying power from the power source to the detachable flashlight assembly.

A friction damper comprises a channel member including at least one friction channel and a wedge member including at least one friction wedge received by a corresponding friction channel for sliding motion along the channel relative to the channel member. Each friction channel has a pair of internal sidewalls connected by an internal transverse wall, wherein at least one of the pair of sidewalls forms an obtuse angle with the transverse wall. In a preferred construction, the sidewalls are symmetrically convergent as they approach the connecting transverse wall. Each friction wedge includes a pair of external sidewalls parallel to the internal sidewalls of the channel, wherein the external sidewalls of the friction wedge are movable into surface-to-surface engagement with the internal sidewalls of the friction channel by adjusting the depth of receipt of the friction wedge in the friction channel. The friction damper of the present invention makes it possible to increase the equivalent friction coefficient by a factor of up to ten to twenty times.

A seismic isolation bearing comprises a lower plate, an upper plate, and a cylindrical roller in rolling contact with an upwardly facing, bearing surface of the lower plate and a downwardly facing surface of the upper plate. The lower plate is fixable to a base, while the upper plate is fixable to a superstructure. One or both bearing surfaces are sloped to form a central trough at which the cylindrical roller resides under normal weight of the superstructure, and toward which the roller is biased when displacement between the plates occurs. A pair of sidewall members are fixed to the lower plate to withstand strong forces directed laterally with respect to the isolation axis along which rolling displacement occurs, and a pair of sliding guides carried one at each end of the roller provide dry frictional damping as they engage an inner wall surface of a corresponding sidewall member.

A method for generating authentication identification symbols, such as numbers, letters, etc., generates sequences of unpredictable symbols which are employed by vendors of various types of goods to authenticate the goods. Using special mathematical functions, an agent generates a first unpredictable subset of symbols to be supplied to a vendor for marking the vendor's goods. The subset is unpredictable in that knowledge of one or more symbols in the subset cannot be employed to predict other symbols in the subset. Preferably, the vendor then selects another subset of symbols from the first subset, and the symbols in this sub-subset are employed for marking the vendor's goods. The unpredictability of the symbol sequences prevents a counterfeiter from being able to predict other symbols in the sequence. In addition, the vendor's use of a sub-subset of symbols prevents the agent from knowing which of the original subset of symbols the vendor is employing to mark the goods. Checking procedures are also employed to permit authentication of the identification symbols by a customer, for example.

Method for generating unpredictable authentication identification symbols

The present invention is a seismic accelerometer to measure and record low frequencies and large dynamic measurement ranges. The accelerometer comprises at least one directional piezoelectric sensing element and an integrated circuit. Each directional piezoelectric sensing element senses inertial forces applied to the accelerometer from a particular direction, X, Y or Z, and generates a force voltage signal in response to the inertial forces applied to the accelerometer. The sensitivity of each directional piezoelectric sensing element is in direct proportion to the sensitivity of the integrated circuit and the mass of a first mass. The integrated circuit system receives the force voltage signal from each directional piezoelectric sensing element and generates an output signal for each direction.

Method and apparatus for real-time structure parameter modification

A method and apparatus for structural deflection control, as well as associated sequential controls that are based on new control laws. The apparatus of this invention is of relatively low cost and performs better than prior art devices. The essence of the invention is to adjust the dynamic parameters (mass, damping, stiffness coefficients of the structure and/or input forcing coefficients) adaptive to input dynamic loads, by using the new devices and the suggested control laws. In so doing, the structure performs an adaptive function to effectively counter the effects induced by multi-directional external excitations. The required control power can be nil, or many times lower than prior art active control devices, and the effectiveness can be equivalent or even better than the current state-of-the-art active controls. The devices used by the apparatus of this invention can readily be manufactured for immediate application in structures, buildings and contents, and other constructed facilities.

A visual image comparison method is provided, including the steps of: obtaining a first digital representation of a first visual image, where the first digital representation comprises a first plurality of pixels, and each pixel has a gray scale indicative of light intensity; obtaining a second digital representation of a second visual image, where the second digital representation comprises a second plurality of pixels, and each pixel has a gray scale indicative of light intensity; and selectively making a first predetermined number of comparisons of corresponding pixels from the first and second digital representations to determine whether a difference in ambient light intensity exists between the first and second visual images, and, selectively making a second predetermined number of comparisons of corresponding pixels from the first and second digital representations if and only if no difference in ambient light intensity exists between the first and second visual images, and indicating an alarm condition when a percentage of the second predetermined number of comparisons result in pixels having a difference in gray scale of a predetermined amount. Apparatus is also described for the purpose of implementing the method.
