Both an improved method and apparatus for determining, on an accelerated basis, the susceptibility of a nickel-based alloy to suffer stress corrosion cracking within a steam generator environment is disclosed herein. The method generally comprises the steps of subjecting a mechanically stressed specimen of the alloy to a mixture of steam and hydrogen at a temperature of between about 365.degree. C. to 435.degree. C., wherein the partial steam pressure is between about 10.4 MPa to 30.4 MPa, and the partial hydrogen pressure is between about 32 kPa to 500 kPa. The improved testing apparatus of the invention generally comprises a vessel for containing a stressed specimen and a pressurized atmosphere formed of steam and hydrogen, and an inlet cell for injecting a selected amount of hydrogen into the pressurized atmosphere of the vessel which includes a diffusion membrane which is permeable to hydrogen but impermeable to the remainder of the pressurized atmosphere. The inlet cell has a tubular housing having a wall formed from a thin layer of hydrogen permeable palladium-silver alloy. The tubular housing contains a gas permeable sponge formed by sintered particles of stainless steel to prevent the thin layer of palladium-silver alloy used in the hydrogen diffusion membrane from imploding in response to the pressure within the vessel.

Apparatus for conducting accelerated corrosion testing of nickel alloys

An improved, compact model steam generator having multiple primary systems is described herein. The model steam generator of the invention is capable of simultaneously simulating a plurality of thermo-hydraulic conditions which may exist in various areas of a full-scale nuclear steam generator in order that the effect of these various conditions on the heat exchange tubes within the full-scale generator may be separately monitored. The model steam generator of the invention generally includes a boiler vessel having a primary side which houses a plurality of individually controllable primary systems, a tubesheet, a secondary side, and a plurality of sample heat exchange tubes for transferring heat between each of the individual primary systems and the secondary side of the boiler vessel. A heat flux control system connected to each of the heat sources within the primary systems allows the operator to separately adjust the heat fluxes of each of the ends of the sample tubes disposed within the secondary side of the boiler vessel. In order to reduce the longitudinal and diametrical dimensions of the primary side of the boiler vessel, the heat source used in each of the individual primary systems is preferably a single, high-intensity electrical heater formed from a coil or other high density configuration of electrical resistance wire. Moreover, each of these primary systems may be housed within the tube-receiving bores of the tube sheet of the boiler vessel in order to minimize the longitudinal dimensions of the primary side even further.

Compact model steam generator having multiple primaries

An attachment, providing a substantially flat and stable writing surface for the shopper, for use on a supermarket shopping cart of the type having a collapsible infant seat pivotally connected to its rear wall. The attachment is pivotally connected to the upper transverse bar of either the rear wall of the shopping cart or the upper transverse bar of the inner wall which forms a part of the infant seat. When in use, the attachment extends forwardly over the infant seat space and rests on the upper transverse bars of the inner wall of the infant seat and of the rear wall of the cart. When the attachment is not in use and the infant seat is closed, the attachment pivots about one of the upper transverse bars of the cart and hangs in a downward attitude. The attachment is constructed as an integral unit of synthetic material and has a flat upper surface which optionally includes advertizing material for products sold in the store and indications where products are located in the shopping area. The attachment also is optionally provided with means for releasably holding a shopper's list and means for holding a pencil.

Attachment for shopping cart

An attachment for use on a shopping cart having a pivotally suspending rear wall panel including a collapsible infant seat portion with the attachment including an elongated substantially flat member having means for pivotally connecting the attachment member to the collapsible infant seat whereby the member is in sliding contact with an upper edge of the rear wall panel, and wherein the attachment is movable from a vertically oriented non use position located against an outside of the rear wall to an adjusted operable position when the collapsible infant seat is adjusted for use. The attachment is constructed of an integral unit of synthetic material and includes a substantially flat upper surface which can be used as a shoppers desk, with the flat upper surface including a number of outlined areas, certain of the outlined areas including advertising media and certain of the outlined areas including an itemized location of goods located in the shopping area. The attachment member is provided with means for releasably holding a shoppers list and means for maintaining a writing instrument, such as a pencil, in position during use of the shopping cart.
