This document provides methods and materials for reducing amyloid beta levels within a mammal (e.g. a mammal having Alzheimer's disease). For example, this document provides methods for using compositions containing a potato polysaccharide preparation to reduce one or more symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. In some cases, a composition containing a potato polysaccharide preparation provided herein can be used to increase binding, sequestration, and/or degradation of CNS-derived amyloid beta polypeptides, thereby inhibiting the formation of neurofibrillary plaques.

Methods and materials for reducing amyloid beta levels within a mammal

This document provides methods and materials for treating diabetes and/or liver steatosis. For example, methods for using compositions containing a potato polysaccharide preparation to reduce one or more symptoms of diabetes or liver steatosis are provided. In some cases, a composition containing a potato polysaccharide preparation provided herein can be used to treat fatty liver disease.

Methods and materials related to the use of morphine, morphine precursors (e.g., reticuline), and inhibitors of morphine synthesis or activity to treat diseases, to reduce inflammation, or to restore normal function are provided.

The invention relates to nitric oxide (NO) stimulating extracts from various plants. Such extracts contain compounds known as healthin I and healthin II. Specifically, the invention provides partially purified plant extracts that have NO stimulating activity, methods of isolating and partially purifying such extracts from plant materials. In addition, the invention provides methods and materials for treating diseases and conditions that require modification of cellular levels of NO, for example, diseases and conditions involving inflammation.

The invention provides isolated nucleic acid molecules, host cells that contain an isolated nucleic acid molecule, and substantially pure polypeptides. For example, the invention provides isolated nucleic acid molecules that encode polypeptides having mu3 opiate receptor activity, host cells that contain an isolated nucleic acid molecule that encodes a polypeptide having mu3 opiate receptor activity, and substantially pure polypeptides that have mu3 opiate receptor activity. In addition, the invention provides methods and materials for identifying mu3 opiate receptor agonists and antagonists.

The present invention relates generally to mu3 opiate receptors, cannabinoid receptors, and estrogen surface receptors (ESRs). Specifically, the invention provides methods and materials for identifying mu3 opiate receptor agonists and antagonists, cannabinoid receptor agonists and antagonists, and ESR agonists and antagonists. In addition, the invention provides an isolated nucleic acid molecule that encodes a mu3 opioid receptor, and an isolated mu3 opioid receptor polypeptide. Further, the invention provides methods and materials for treating cancers, inflammatory conditions, sepsis conditions, viral infections, and cardiovascular diseases.
