Novel phosphonium salts of N-phosphonomethylglycine are disclosed herein, having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl benzyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl and substituted benzyl wherein said substituents are independently selected from halogen, lower alkoxy, and lower alkyl; provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, or R.sup.4 is benzyl, substituted benzyl, or substituted phenyl. The compounds are useful as herbicides and plant growth regulants.
