An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is operated to selectively provide energy to a critical load from a grid and an energy storage device and to transfer energy between the energy storage device and the grid. A controller causes the UPS to selectively support bidirectional and unidirectional transfers of energy between the grid and the energy storage device based on a state of charge (SOC) of the energy storage device.

Controllers for uninterruptible power supplies and methods of operating the same

A system includes a DC bus and an auxiliary power source coupled to the DC bus. The system further includes an energy storage device and a modular uninterruptible power supply (UPS) including a first uninterruptible power module (UPM) coupled to the DC bus and configured to provide power to an AC load from the auxiliary power source and a second UPM coupled to the DC bus and the energy storage device and configured to transfer energy between the DC bus and the energy storage device to regulate a voltage on the DC bus.

An apparatus, such as a power routing apparatus, includes an enclosure having first and second compartments having respective first and second opposing walls. A cooling structure is disposed between the first and second compartments and has a coolant passage defined therein configured to support a coolant flow in a direction parallel to the first and second opposing walls. First and second semiconductor switches (e.g., static switches) are disposed on the first and second walls on opposite sides of the coolant passage and are configured to be cooled by the coolant flow.

The cooling fluid may be electrically insulating and the vessel may be sealed.

A power distribution system includes at least two DC buses and at least two AC buses and a plurality of converter units interconnecting the DC buses and the AC buses in a ring. The system may further include one or more AC power sources (e.g., utility feeds, engine-generator sets, etc.) connected to selected ones of the AC buses and/or one or more DC power sources (batteries, capacitor banks, fuel cells, etc.) connected to selected ones of the DC buses. The ring configuration can support a variety of AC and DC loads and provide redundancy and power distribution among the power sources.

A system includes an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) configured to selectively provide power to a critical load from a grid and an energy storage device, and a grid edge controller configured to communicate with a controller of the UPS and to cause the UPS to operate the energy storage as a distributed energy resource (DER) for the grid while preserving autonomous operation of the UPS to serve the critical load. The grid edge controller may be configured, for example, to maintain a critical reserve in the energy storage device that enables the UPS to maintain the critical load, while allowing the energy storage device to also be used for demand management, frequency regulation and other grid-oriented tasks. The grid edge controller may be configured to control the UPS, for example, via an application programming interface (API) of the controller of the UPS.

Grid-edge controllers for uninterruptible power supplies and methods of operating the same

Power is provided from a power source and a status of the power source is signaled by controlling a waveform of an AC voltage generated from the power source. The status may include, for example, a capacity of the power source. In some embodiments, a frequency of the AC voltage may be controlled to signal the status. The power source may include, for example, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and signaling a status of the power source may include controlling an inverter of the UPS to signal the status. Power systems and methods using voltage waveform signaling

A system includes a plurality of power routing units. Each of the power routing units includes a first AC port, a second AC port, and a static switch configured to couple and decouple the first AC port and the second AC port. Each of the power routing units further includes a DC port and a bidirectional converter circuit coupled between the second AC port and the DC port. The DC ports of the power routing units are coupled in common to a DC bus and the system further includes a control circuit configured to control the power routing units to provide power transfer between at least two of the power routing units via the DC bus.

Uninterruptible power supply systems and methods using interconnected power routing units

A method of operating an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system can be provided by activating an idle state for a UPS module included in the UPS system and providing a UPS module test input to the UPS module in the idle state. A UPS module test response can be provided from the UPS module in the idle state, to the UPS module test input. The UPS module test response can be compared to a predetermined UPS module test response and the UPS module can be identified as a potentially faulty UPS module responsive to determining that the UPS module test response varies from the predetermined UPS module test response by more than a threshold value.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) modules for testing systems

A UPS includes a first bridge circuit module, a second bridge circuit module, and a control circuit configured to operate the first bridge circuit module as an inverter and to selectively operate the second bridge circuit module as a bypass switch and a rectifier. The control circuit may be configured to operate the second bridge circuit module as bypass switch in a standby UPS mode and to operate the second bridge circuit module as a rectifier in an on-line UPS mode.
