The invention is an modified audible signal, such as a piezoelectric noise-making and audible signaling device, which further includes a hydrophobic covering material, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The hydrophobic covering material is known to be water resistant, but does not effect the sound of the audible signaling device, thereby delaying or preventing the failure of the audible signaling device from water corrosion.

The invention is an improved piezoelectric noise-making and audible signaling device which produces a distinctive 2 KHz tone that is more pronounced and significantly easier to perceive, especially in a noisy environment. The volume of the audible tone is amplified by using two or three sound-amplifying chambers or cavities.

A piezoelectric transducer driving circuit has a main oscillator stage, a buffer circuit, and a voltage-doubling circuit. The main oscillator stage includes a frequency-swept signal generator that can be configured to provide different outputs to the buffers, which in turn provide the output to the voltage-doubling circuit, which supplies the piezoelectric transducer, causing it to mechanically deform and produce audible sounds of different types.

A novel modular audible signaling device is provided capable of expanded functionality, such as the provision of visual signaling as well. A piezoelectric transducer audible alarm signaling device is provided with an assembly having a housing defining an interior holding a piezoelectric transducer, the housing having a first exterior portion for attachment to a surface and a second exterior portion extending beyond the surface, wherein the first exterior portion and the second exterior portion comprise at least one pair of communicating apertures whereby an electrical conductor may extend through the at least one pair of apertures to the surface. In another aspect, a piezoelectric transducer assembly is provided having a housing defining an interior and a surface, the housing holding a piezoelectric transducer, wherein the housing further comprises an illumination element associated the surface thereof, the illumination element having one or more conductors which extend through the interior of the housing, whereby the illumination element may be electrically inserted into the same electrical circuit as the piezoelectric transducer.

A microcontroller is used to drive a piezoelectric transducer. Certain pins on the microcontroller are indicative of selection signals. The selector can be activated either by a user directly (e.g., by pushing buttons), by an offboard actuator (e.g., another microcontroller), or by any method known in the art for activating switches. In one embodiment, an output pin of the microcontroller acts as output for a high-low oscillator. The oscillation amplitude toggles between 0 and 5 volts in a square wave fashion. The output pin is coupled to the base of a bipolar junction transistor so that the transistor turns on and off as a switch in response to the high-low oscillations. As the transistor turns on and off, supply voltage is routed through a network of logic inverters, after first passing through a current limiting impedance means such as a resistor, to the piezoelectric transducer in a manner designed to provide a voltage swing at the transducer on the order of two times the supply voltage for each oscillation. In another embodiment, instead of using a single pin on the microcontroller to alternately forward and reverse bias a single transistor, the microcontroller actuates predetermined pins that are connected to different RC oscillators. The RC oscillators are then connected to the driving circuit. The circuit includes a voltage regulator connected at an input to the supply voltage and at an output to the power supply pin of the microcontroller.

An alarm system circuit comprises a logic array comprising a piezoelectric transducer driven by one or more Schmitt triggers. The logic array operates at substantially resonant frequency, and the circuit provides a feedback loop to sustain the oscillations of the logic array to drive the transducer. In one preferred embodiment, the array includes an additional Schmitt trigger causing the circuit to toggle on and off, thus making a pulsating tone.

An electronic chime is created by a piezoelectric transducer with an exponentially decaying audio signal. The electronic chime has a power supply, an oscillator, a drive circuit, and a piezoelectric transducer. The drive circuit contains reactive components that function with the piezoelectric transducer to modulate the amplitude of the decaying audio signal. The amplitude modulated audio signal better simulates a mechanical chime.

An audio signal is generated that sweeps from a lower frequency to a higher frequency in a substantially linear function. The circuit used to produce this sweeping audio frequency has a stable power supply, a square wave oscillator, a ramp generator, a voltage controlled oscillator, a drive circuit and an audio circuit. The square wave generator is composed of logic gates that generate a square wave with near instantaneous rising and falling edges. The ramp generator creates a sweep drive signal that is a substantially linear triangular waveform.

An electronic audio circuit operates a piezoelectric audio transducer to produce a two-tone warbling audio output. The electronic circuit includes an integrated circuit double timer and integrated circuit logic gates. One timer produces a toggling frequency that operates a toggling circuit composed of a logic gate to electrically connect and disconnect an electrical component from a frequency determining network to produce two frequency determining networks. The other timer produces two tones depending upon which frequency determining network is electrically connected to the other timer. The two tone are buffered and then drive a two-element piezoelectric transducer.
