The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for providing each terminal (t , t , t) in a network (n) with an adapted location area (HA , HA , FA , FA ), customised to the long term or short term historical movements or behaviour of the terminal (t , t , t) in the network (n). The terminal (t , t , t) can enter three different modes; session mode, packet mode and transaction mode, which controls what kind of location area (HA , HA , FA , FA ) the terminal (t , t , t) should use. The types of location areas are a home location area (HA , HA ), based on the long term historical movements of the terminal (t , t , t) and used when the terminal (t , t , t) is located inside a home area constituting the normal mobility pattern of the terminal in the network (n), a session mode-fast adaptive location area (FA ), used when the terminal (t , t , t) enters the session mode and is located outside the home area, and a packet mode/transaction mode-fast adaptive location area (FA ), used for burstlike traffic when the terminal (t , t , t) enters the packet mode or the transaction mode.

Method and arrangement for increasing the range for a telecommunication

In a cellular telephone system of the type having TDMA channels, the beginnings of the time slots of an uplink transmission as seen in the base station are offset from the beginnings of the time slots of a downlink transmission as seen in the base station by a predetermined amount. By offsetting the beginnings of the time slots, a mobile station is able to operate at an extended distance from the base station without any modifications to the mobile station. Because the mobile stations can operate at a greater distance from the base station without a decrease in the number of available channels, the cellular telephone system is particularly suitable for use in rural areas or coastal areas.

Cell extension in a cellular telephone system

The present invention relates to a method of registering a mobile station in a cellular mobile radio system in which areas, each including a plurality of cells, form registration areas. Each registration area (RA1, RA2, RA3, . . . ) has its own identity (X). According to the proposed method, individual location areas are defined whenever registering a given mobile station with the intention of avoiding an unnecessarily high number of registrations in border areas of the different registration areas. A location area may have the form of a list of registration areas (X1, X2, X3, . . . ), which is stored in a mobile station (MS), or may be stored in the system (HLR, MSC) and transmitted to the mobile station (MS) via a base station (BS) in a given registration area, in conjunction with registration of the mobile station in this area. A new registration is made only if the mobile station enters a service area that belongs to a registration area whose identity (X) is not found on the stored list of registration areas (X1, X2, X3, . . . ).

Registration method in a cellular mobile radio system

In a telecommunications system, a method and system for power regulation compares the received power to a target value at a receiving station to adjust the power of the transmitting station periodically or non-periodically. Calculation of the signal strength required at the transmitting station may be performed at either the transmitting or receiving station using the path loss between the respective stations. The target value may be a constant or a function of the distance from the base station or a function of the path loss between the transmitting and receiving station.

Method and apparatus for regulating transmission power

A method of facilitating interchanging the use of a mobile station and a permanently wired telephone set includes providing the number of the permanently wired telephone set as a bar code near the telephone set. A bar code reader is connected to the mobile station for scanning the bar code for ordering of interchanging the mobile station and the permanently wired set without dialing the number on a keyset of the mobile station. A predetermined interchanging key on the keyset is designated and connected for ordering the interchanging. The interchange is initiated by scanning the bar code with the bar code reader and pressing the interchanging key.

Method and apparatus of facilitating interchanging the use of a mobile

In a cellular mobile radiotelephone system having a plurality of cells providing radio coverage by a plurality of base stations and having a plurality of mobile stations, the location of a mobile station with respect to cell boundaries is identified using measurements, performed at the mobile station or at selected cells, of transmissions from the cells or transmissions from the mobile station. When a cell is found that meets a specified standard with respect to a call connection in progress according to a first radio-signal criterion, a handoff candidate cell is selected according a second different radio-signal criterion. When no cell is found that meet the specified standard, a cell is selected according to the first radio-signal criterion. Handoff to the selected cell is attempted if that cell is not presently handling that call. More particularly, the first radio-signal criterion may be signal strength and the second radio-signal criterion may be path loss. When a cell is found that meets the signal-strength criterion, the cell is determined to have sufficient signal strength margin so that the path loss criterion may be used instead. As mentioned above, use of the path loss criterion has the advantages of conserving power, reducing interference, and allowing effective cell boundaries to remain fixed. When no cell is found that meets the signal-strength criterion, the call connection is determined to be signal-strength limited such that the signal strength criterion is used to select the cell having the greatest signal strength.
