A crankcase for an internal combustion engine with two side walls, an upper surface and a first end face, where the side walls, the upper surface, and the first end face are joined with one another as a single piece. The crankcase is open at the second end face, and an adapter flange detachably seals the second end face of the crankcase from the outside environment.

In a bottom plate for closing a crankcase of an internal combustion engine wherein the bottom plate includes openings and channels for collecting and conducting fluids, the bottom plate consists of a number of individual plates which are joined together after the channels and openings have been cut into the individual plates by laser beam cutting or water beam cutting.

In a bottom plate for closing the crankcase of an internal combustion engine including coolant and lubricant flow channels integrated into the bottom plate which consists of individual plates stacked on top of one another, a heat exchanger, which consists of heat exchanger plates stacked on top of one another as disposed on the bottom plate so as to form at least one common chamber therewith for transferring at least one of coolant and lubricant between the bottom plate and the heat exchanger.

A cover plate is provided for closing a crankcase of an internal-combustion engine on its underside. The cover plate has a suction point for collecting lubricant from the crankcase. With respect to the crankcase, the suction point is closed off by a screen plate. This screen plate comprises a first area with passage openings for the lubricant and a second area which is impervious to the lubricant. The screen plate has the effect that a reliable lubricant intake from the suction point is ensured even in the event of a tilt of the internal-combustion engine.

An exhaust system for a supercharged internal-combustion engine in which of the exhaust-gas-carrying components, the exhaust gas pipes leading from the cylinder outlets to the turbines, or the turbines, or the turbines and the exhaust gas pipes are arranged jointly in an exhaust-gas-tight housing. Openings in the exhaust-gas-carrying components cause the space formed between the exhaust-gas-carrying components and the housing to be filled with exhaust gas. By way of a bypass pipe which is connected with the space and leads to the turbine, exhaust gas can be blown off from the space. A blow-off valve is arranged in the bypass pipe.

A throttle flap construction (12) is installed in an exhaust gas duct (11). For the installation the duct wall is provided with a radially facing, axially extending narrow slot (20) centrally provided with a circular opening so that a flap disk (14) may pass radially inwardly through the slot while a bearing portion (17) of the flap disk (14) may pass through the central circular opening. During installation, the flap disk (14) extends vertically when the throttle unit is inserted, a cover (16) is bolted to a flange (11A) surrounding the slot (20) and the central opening (21). Thus, the duct (11) can be properly sealed without cutting entirely through the duct in a radial plane.

An exhaust gas turbocharger having rotor runners disposed in roller bearings protects the roller bearings from shocks and vibrations by a pressure-oil-filled oil film damper. By a shut-off device arranged in the main lubricating oil duct, the lubricating oil supply of the roller bearings is shut off when the rotor runners are stopped. However, the pressure oil supply of the oil film damper remains operative so that the oil film damper retains its operability.

A sealing arrangement between a shaft and a housing of a fluid flow engine consists of a blocking gas space acted upon with blocking gas, which is delimited by two sealing rings guided in annular grooves of the shaft and radially sealingly abutting at the shaft through-bore. In order to avoid operation-endangering wear of the sealing rings in case of failure of the blocking gas supply, the shaft through-bore is constructed with three diameter regions mutually offset by right angle steps. The steps form each an axial support for the coordinated sealing ring which comes into action when a permissive initial wear has occurred at the sealing ring.

A bearing support of the rotor of an exhaust gas turbocharger with two inwardly disposed roller bearings in which, to assure a long length of life of the bearing, the roller members of the bearings are pressed constantly against their races so that they roll off along the same in a defined manner and no wear occurs as a result of sliding or load changes. The abutment forces which act at the bearings are produced by one or several pneumatic cylinders whose pressure spaces are preferably in connection with a gas space of the compressor. As the magnitude of the charging pressure of the compressor is dependent on the rotational speed, the abutment forces are also variable with the rotational speed. The piston surfaces of the pressure cylinders are so matched that at low rotational speeds as low as possible a bearing friction loss results whereas the abutment forces are still sufficiently high to assure a damage-free bearing operation. As a result of the charging pressure rising with increasing rotational speeds, the necessary considerably higher abutment forces are also available at higher rotational speeds.

A piston internal combustion engine with two-stage supercharging in which two exhaust gas turbocharger groups consisting each of a high pressure and low pressure exhaust gas turbocharger, supply the piston internal combustion engine with charging air. One exhaust gas turbocharger group is constructed to be connected and disconnected, whereby a closure device is arranged in the exhaust gas line of the high pressure exhaust gas turbocharger and a check valve is arranged in the suction line of the low pressure exhaust gas turbocharger. For connecting and disconnecting the exhaust gas turbocharger group at partial load, the cross section of the closure devices is controlled. In order to avoid nonpermissive excess rotational speeds in the rotating parts of the high pressure exhaust gas turbocharger during a connecting operation, charging air is conducted back from the pressure side to the suction side by way of a controllable bypass line between the suction and pressure line of the high pressure compressor. The bypass line is controlled by a further closure device in dependence on the opening of the charging air closure device.

A fluid flow machine of the radial type of construction with adjustable guide blades in a radially extending annular channel of the fluid flow housing. The bearing support of the guide blades takes place in a guide blade carrier that represents a one-piece bearing cage with lateral flow surfaces for the guide blades. The guide blade carrier is composed of two bearing rings which are combined into one structural unit by way of fixed connecting webs disposed in the flow path. In this structural unit, the space for the guide blades can be machined very accurately in its axial width to maintain the tolerances which means small gap losses and correspondingly favorable efficiencies. Since the guide blade carrier is so arranged in the housing that expansions of the housing by reason of heat or pressure warping are not transmitted, the gap tolerances can be selected correspondingly still smaller, and the efficiency can be still further improved. It is also significant that the fluid flow machine and its components can be constructed particularly simple from a constructive point of view and particularly reliable in operation by means of the housing-independent bearing support of the guide blades in the guide blade carrier.
