A plate for a viscous shear coupling has inner and outer peripheries and slots which extend partly across the radial dimension between the peripheries. Between each adjacent pair of slots is a land and this is deformed out of the general plane of the disc to provide oppositely inclined surfaces.

Viscous shear couplings and plates therefor

The coupling has a hub (2) rotatable in a housing (3) at least partially filled with viscous fluid. Two sets of plates (7, 10) are non-rotatably attached to the hub and the housing and alternate in the housing in an overlapping relationship. One set of plates (7) of the coupling (1) comprises segments (14) which are uniformly inclined in one direction and which contact corresponding plates (10) of the other set.

Fluid friction coupling

A viscous shear coupling comprises a housing and a hub rotatable within the housing. Plates are splined to the housing and plates to the hub, there is a pair of plates splined to the hub between each two adjacent plates splined to the housing. The plates in pairs splined to the hub have convergent apertures therein, each aperture converging in a direction away from that radial face of the plate which is adjacent to the other plate of the pair.

Viscous shear couplings

A viscous shear coupling includes a housing and a hub, the hub with and housing having interleaved plates and the housing containing viscous liquid. A screw pump is provided to pump the viscous liquid into and out of the portion of the housing containing the plates thus to vary the torque transmission of the coupling. The viscous coupling may be used in a motor vehicle driveline to provide a viscous transmission.
