The effluent stream from the treatment of glass with vapor-phase coating materials contains tin residues. By washing that effluent stream, in an apparatus having a scrubber bed and flow-control and -recycling means, with an acidic solution having a limited concentration of the tin residue, recovery efficiency of the post-coating treatment is improved, and process emissions are reduced.

A hood for coating glass articles has side walls and a top part, forming a tunnel through which hot glass articles pass; blowing and suction channels in the active part of the hood are formed to present substantial line contacts facing the ware being coated. Apparatus for depositing a metal-oxide coating on glass articles

A coating applicator is provided for depositing a film on a surface of glass or other substrates by chemical-vapor deposition. The applicator includes a pair of opposing coating nozzles for applying a vaporized coating-chemical reactant in a carrier gas to the surface at such a concentration and velocity that coating of the surface is achieved under substantially reaction-rate-controlled conditions. Each coating nozzle is positioned adjacent the surface with a small clearance therebetween, the clearance being open to the outside atmospehre. The opposing coating nozzles are directed toward each other at a selected angle with respect to the surface of the substrate. The angle and the clearance provide a condition where there is substantially no intermixing of coating vapors with the outside atmosphere.

Apparatus for coating a substrate

A coating applicator is provided for depositing a film on a surface of glass and other substrates by chemical vapor deposition. A submersible positive displacement piston pump includes a cylinder for insertion within a body of liquid, the cylinder including a working end and an opposite end, an inlet port, an outlet port and a working chamber bounded by the outlet port and the working end; a piston rotatably and reciprocably movable in the cylinder between a retracted positon and an extended position for pumping liquid from the inlet port to the outlet port, the piston including a free end having a recessed section alternately in fluid communication with the inlet port and the outlet port; a pivoting assembly pivotally connected to a drive motor which rotatably and reciprocably drives the piston in the cylinder; and an extension assembly for connecting the pivoting assembly to the piston and for ensuring that the pivoting assembly and the drive motor are positioned out of the body of liquid when the piston and cylinder are positioned in the body of liquid, the extension assembly including a shaft extension for connecting the pivoting assembly to the piston, and a hollow extension pipe surrounding the shaft extension, the extension pipe being connected to the opposite end of the cylinder in a sealing relation and having an aperture spaced slightly from the sealing connection for maintaining a liquid seal at the opposite end of the cylinder when the level of the body of liquid falls below the opposite end of the cylinder.

Haze-free tin oxide coatings are made from an organotin compound which ordinarily gives only hazy coatings. The improvement comprises first forming an undercoat of a haze-free tin oxide film on a substrate, preferably by decomposition of monophenyltin trichloride. Thereafter the tin oxide overcoating assumes the haze-free characteristics of the undercoat film.

These structures comprise a glass sheet, an infrared-reflecting tin oxide coating on one major surface of the sheet, and an iridescence-reducing tin oxide coating on the opposed major surface of the sheet. The iridescence-reducing tin oxide coating is particularly characterized by being haze-free by virtue of its being made by contacting said sheet with monophenyltin trichloride in an oxygen-containing atmosphere.

Transparent, haze-free tin oxide coatings on glass are obtained by chemical vapor deposition of liquid monophenyltin trichloride. The method includes the steps of vaporizing liquid monophenyltin trichloride and contacting the vapor in an oxidizing atmosphere with a substrate at an elevated substrate temperature, preferably about 450.degree. to 600.degree. C. The tin oxide coating on glass produced by this method has a haze which is less than 1%, and is substantially equal to the haze value for uncoated glass.
