The present invention provides system, devices, and methods for scanning an object while avoiding radiation exposure. For example, the present invention provides systems comprising a scanning device with input and output openings, and a safety sensor adjacent to the input or output opening that sends a signal that turns off or physically blocks electromagnetic radiation if the presence of an invading element (e.g., human hand) is detected by the safety sensor.

A device includes a radiation tunnel in which an X-ray source and a detector unit are disposed, the detectors of which are aligned with the X-ray source so as to detect transmitted radiation for detecting suspicious objects. Disposed in the radiation tunnel is a frame which can be moved over an examination region and has two supports which extend at a spacing parallel to each other and are rigidly connected to each other, the radiation source being secured on one vertical support and the detector unit being secured on the other vertical support.

A betatron, especially for an X-ray testing apparatus is provided that includes a rotationally symmetrical inner yoke having two interspaced parts, at least one round plate that is arranged between the inner yoke parts in such a way that the longitudinal axis thereof coincides with the rotational symmetrical axis of the inner yoke, an outer yoke connecting the two inner yoke parts, at least one main field coil, a toroidal betatron tube arranged between the inner yoke parts, at least one tune coil in the region of the at least one round plate, and an electronic control system for controlling a current flow through the tune coil during the injection phase of the electrons into the betatron tube.

A betatron is provided, particularly in an x-ray inspection station, comprising an accelerator block that is provided with a rotationally symmetrical inner yoke composed of two spaced-apart pieces, at least one main field coil, and a toroidal betatron tube which is disposed between the pieces of the inner yoke. The betatron further comprises an outer yoke which embraces the accelerator block, connects the two pieces of the inner yoke, and has at least one lateral opening, as well as a lead shield that accommodates the accelerator block and the outer yoke. The outer yoke is composed of at least two parts which are movable relative to one another between an open and a closed position. The accelerator block can be laterally removed from the opening of the outer yoke that is in the open position.

A betatron is provided for producing pulses of accelerated electrons, particularly in an x-ray testing device, comprising at least one main field coil, one expansion coil for transferring the accelerated electrons to a target, and one electronic control system of the expansion coil for applying an expansion pulse to the expansion coil. The electronic control system of the expansion coil is designed such that the time of the expansion pulse for adjusting the final energy of the electrons is variable relative to the main field.

A lead shielding for a betatron in an X-ray generator is provided that includes at least four shielding parts of which two are semi-cylindrical and provided with recesses in the envelope surfaces thereof. The semi-cylindrical shielding parts are arranged in corresponding recesses of the remaining shielding parts by means of the envelope surfaces thereof, such that the recesses in the envelope surfaces form air channels between the semi-cylindrical shielding parts and the remaining shielding parts.

Thus, a negligible persistence in comparison with the integration time between two detector readings is achieved.

An X-ray generating system includes a first high-voltage source generating a first high voltage; a second high=voltage source generating a second high voltage different from the first high voltage; and an X-ray generator. The X-ray generator includes a first assembly having a first cathode and a first anode for emitting a first X-ray beam from a first focal point on the first anode upon application of the first high voltage to the first assembly. The X-ray generator further includes a second assembly having a second cathode and a second anode for emitting a second X-ray beam from a second focal point on the second anode upon application of the second high voltage to the second assembly. A method and apparatus is provided for identifying crystalline and polycrystalline material in an object placed in an examination region. X-rays having a polychromatic energy distribution are passed through a diaphragm to create a central x-ray beam in a fan plane that is projected into the examination region for irradiating a cross section of the object. The x-rays are diffracted by individual subregions of the object along the cross section in dependence of the presence of crystalline and/or polycrystalline material in the individual subregions. Collimators with collimating windows are arranged beyond the examination region with respect to the diaphragm, each collimating window covering a fixed, predetermined subregion of the examination region and extracting at least one diffracted plane fan beam from the respective individual subregion of the object. Energy spectra of the diffracted x-ray plane fan beams exiting the respective one of the collimating windows are captured with a detector located behind each of the collimating windows for converting the captured energy spectra into signals usable in a data processing arrangement.

Method and arrangement for identifying crystalline and polycrystalline

An X-ray examining system includes a mobile vehicle; and an X-ray examining apparatus for ascertaining contents of an object. The examining apparatus includes a supporting structure mounted on the mobile vehicle; and X-ray source for generating a fan-shaped X-ray and being carried by the vehicle; and an X-ray detector mounted on the supporting structure. The X-ray examining system is adapted to travel along the object to be examined while irradiating the object and detecting the X-rays after passage thereof through the object.

X-ray examining apparatus for large-volume goods

An apparatus is disclosed for examining containers and/or vehicles at an airport for impermissible contents, such as explosives, weapons, drugs, smuggled goods and the like. To improve the ability to identify such items in the article or vehicle under inspection, an image processor is provided having a computer to which the signals of the radiation detectors are supplied. The computer uses these signals to calculate a radiation silhouette of the articles. A memory is provided in which a reference image of the article is stored. A comparison circuit is supplied with the signals from the computer and from the memory, so that a differential image derived from the calculated radiation silhouette from the computer and from the reference image is displayed on a monitor, connected to the comparison circuit. Differences between the cureent image and the reference image can thereby be easily observed.
