A method of X-H rolling of a parallel flange steel structural shape or beam with an H cross section using a compact rolling group. In the first universal mill frame the vertical roll have roll surfaces inclined to one another at an angle up to 10&#xb0; whereas in the second universal mill frame the vertical rolls have cylindrical roll surfaces which divide the H opening cross section with lateral surfaces of the horizontal roll. The structural shape is rolled in the second universal mill frame to up to 100% of the reduction in the first rolling mill frame.

A method of rolling finished sections from preliminary sections by means of roll stand arrangements which operate in reversing operation and include a compact rolling group composed of a first universal stand at the entry side and a second universal stand at the exit side and an intermediate edging stand arranged between the universal stands, and a roughing group arranged in front of the compact rolling group and composed of vertical roll stands and horizontal roll stands and/or universal stands. The method utilizes roll stand arrangements which operate in a rolling line in a reversing operation. A roughing rolling group has in a first rolling line a runout roller table and a transverse transport device following the runout roller table and in a second rolling line a parallel run-in roller table for a compact tandem stand group. A horizontal stand of the roughing rolling group and/or an intermediate edging stand of the compact tandem stand group each have two selectable grooves, wherein a universal stand on the exit side of the compact tandem group has one or more two-high horizontal stands with grooved rolls. When rolling with this stand arrangement, for adjusting the width and for adjusting the shape of a preliminary section having a H-shaped cross-section while simultaneously reducing the cross-section in the roughing rolling group, further reduction of the cross-section with deformation of section ends for forming interlocks is carried in the compact tandem stand group and a final finish-shaping of the interlocks of the section is carried out in the grooves of the two-high horizontal stands.

A method of rolling steel sections, particularly in a universal section mill, wherein X-shape rolling and H-shape rolling are carried out alternatingly and specifically directed cooling of the steel section is carried out during rolling. The roll cooling water flowing off from the H-shaped rolls is concentrated in the cooling water channels. A workpiece is advanced through a succession of universal roll stands each having a pair of rotatably positively driven horizontal rolls engaging horizontal surfaces of the workpiece and a pair of idling vertical rolls engaging vertical surfaces of the workpiece and normally only rotationally entrained by engagement with the advancing workpiece. The roll stand is controlled by detecting the peripheral speeds of the vertical rolls and generating outputs corresponding thereto and then comparing the outputs to set points and generating error signals corresponding to the difference. The peripheral speed and position of the horizontal rolls are detected to establish same as operating characteristics. Finally the peripheral speeds of the vertical rolls are varied in accordance with the respective differences by varying at least one of the operating characteristics. Such variation is done by changing the crosswise position and/or the peripheral speed of the horizontal rolls, as the vertical/horizontal speed ratio is affected both by amount of vertical compression and amount of tension in the workpiece.
