A water-bearing household appliance such as a dish washing machine or washing machine is provided that has a water supply system, an electrically operable electromagnetic water inlet valve for controlling the water supply, and a control unit operating a control program that controls the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve is controlled for a first time period and it is determined when the first time period is complete whether a predetermined test amount of water has flowed through the water inlet valve. If a predetermined test amount of water has flowed through the water inlet valve, the water inlet valve is operated in a first operation mode. On the other hand, if less than the predetermined test amount of water has flowed through the water inlet valve, the water inlet valve is operated in a second operation mode with a reduced long-term load.

A dishwasher and a method for detecting the quantity of dishes in the washing container of the dishwasher are provided. The method includes detecting data relating to the motor operation of a circulating pump and detecting data relating to the heat increase in the dishwasher during a pre-washing phase and a heating phase and comparing the detected data with stored target values. A quantity value for the quantity of dishes in the washing container is set based upon a comparison of the detected data with stored target values. The method also includes adapting the washing program according to the set dishes quantity value.

A dishwasher with a system for filling level recognition may be achieved which reliably determines the fluid level inside the dishwasher without the use of moving parts, whereby the dishwasher is provided with at least one capacitive filling level sensor for recognition of the fluid level of the rinsing fluid contained in the dishwasher, the electrical capacitance of which changes depending on the height of the fluid level. The fluid level in the dishwasher can thus be reliably determined without the need for moving parts and merely by the use of electronic components.

The fluid level in the dishwasher can thus be reliably determined without the need for moving parts and merely by the use of electronic components. The system further permits a non-contact filling level recognition, whereby the filling level sensor and the rinsing fluid do not come into contact.
