To reduce the axial length of the dynamo electric machine--remote rotating apparatus combination, in which the remote rotating apparatus, typically, is a gas turbine, the operating shaft of the remote apparatus is formed with a conical recess, and a claw-type rotor, rotating between a fixed field structure and a fixed armature structure is formed with a hub having a conical projection fitting into the conical recess and no other bearing. The shaft, thus, can be terminated flush with the remote apparatus housing structure, which can be formed with additional locating elements, such as a flange, accurately concentric with the center of the shaft for positioning of the dynamo electric machine against the remote apparatus in accurately aligned position.

In order to provide improved cooling for electrical machinery, especially A. C. generators for motor vehicles, with elimination of a rotating ventilating fan, the invention provides heat pipes disposed so that the evaporation regions of the heat pipes contact or surround the heat-producing parts of the generator, in particular the stator windings and the rectifying diodes. These regions communicate through sealed conduits with condensation regions that are located in places subject to lower temperatures that prevail near the heat producing elements. Disposed within the heat pipes are per se known capillary structures which transport condensed heat transport medium back to the evaporation region. Various embodiments are presented.

Cooling apparatus for electrical machinery

To provide a fresh air duct for cooling of a brush holder-voltage regulator combination without introducing additional axial length to the overall alternator-regulator structure, a fresh air duct extends radially from the end bell of the alternator which is adjacent the slip rings, and the brush holder and voltage regulator are secured to a common support plate to form a single subassembly, the support plate covering an opening in the end bell of the alternator to permit introduction of the brush holder-voltage regulator assembly as a unit through the opening from the outside, positioning the brushes within the brush holder against the slip rings, and closing off the end bell to prevent ingress of hot air which may be in the engine compartment of the vehicle with which the alternator is to be used, so that the cooling air for the slip rings, brushes and the transistor voltage regulator is supplied as a stream of fresh air from the cooling air inlet stub which has its outlet positioned close to the brush holder-voltage regulator assembly.

Three-phase vehicular generator construction

To simplify manufacture and improve concentricity of operation of the rotating parts of a claw pole generator with respect to the stationary parts thereof, in which the generator as such has no bearing elements and the rotating parts are supported solely from the shaft of the machine with which the generator is associated, the interfitting centering engagement of surfaces between the generator and the machine of the stationary part and also of the rotary part are all located at the side of the generator adjacent the machine, thereby avoiding accurate machining and positioning of generator elements with respect to other elements of the generator which, in turn, are located on the machine. In a preferred form, the field pole structure of the generator is fitted into the bore which receives the main bearing of the remote machine, thereby avoiding the necessity of forming another concentric positioning shoulder or the like on the machine end structure.

Bearingless generator and rotary machine combination

For more effective cooling of directly driven claw-pole, typically automotive alternators, a system of internal passageways is provided through which cooling oil is forced from the pressurized engine oil supply system. The oil flows directly over surfaces of the rectifiers or their heat sink, the exciter core, and the stator housing. A portion of the oil is branched off in a metered quantity at the inlet directly to a shaft bearing, which it cools and lubricates. Various passageways systems are described, including one which permits electrical feed-throughs and the diodes to be mounted dry. A particular configuration is described for a shaft bearing, in which between an armor bushing and a cast bearing support hub there are annular oil channels connected to longitudinal oil channels to evenly distribute the pressurized oil around the bearing.

Oil cooling for an electrical generator

A cooling plate of the unit is connected to each of the a.c. terminals of the alternator and each cooling plate carries the positive-side diode or diodes, the negative-side diode or diodes and the excitor field diode connected to that a.c. terminal. The cooling plates are mounted on a shaped insulating disk in which wires are embedded for connecting together the connection leads of the diodes. Provision is made for bringing out terminals for the connection of a regulator unit and for bringing out a terminal for one a.c. phase, as well as for attachment of the d.c. output terminals.

Rectifier unit for provision in an alternator

The combination of the brush holder of the alternator and the voltage regulator into a unitary structure mounted on a cover fitting over a hole in the alternator casing enables the complete assembly to be economically made in the mushroom shape conventional for d.c. generators of vehicle engines, so that the device can readily be incorporated into an engine of existing design.

To prevent connecting difficulties in the manufacture of automotive-type alternators of the claw pole generator type, resilient spring compression terminals, or contacts are formed, respectively, on a terminal board or on a voltage regulator terminal for engagement with a spring terminal element connected to the fieldwinding so that mere placement of the terminal board or a voltage regulator, respectively, against the springy terminal connections will effect electrical connection and not requiring any internal connecting steps within the alternator and especially at locations of impaired accessibility since they are hidden behind the terminal board, or voltage regulator, respectively.

Slip-ringless claw-pole dynamo electric machine, particularly

A generator housing has a cast cup-shaped member which has an axis and an open end closed by a bearing plate. A cylindrical portion of the cup-shaped member is provided with three protuberances angularly spaced 120.degree. apart from each other about the axis of the cup-shaped member. Each protuberance extends the entire axial length of the cylindrical portion of the cup-shaped member and is provided with a longitudinal passage therethrough to receive through-bolts for holding the housing in a predetermined position. The bearing plate is formed with through openings aligned and communicating with the passages, the through-bolts also passing through the respective openings.
