A positional adjustment mechanism comprises a movable plate having first and second positioning actuators and a biasing member to bias the plate against the actuators. The movable plate has three flat surfaces facing the actuators and biasing member one of which is not substantially perpendicular to either of the other two. The biasing member ensures that the plate is held in contact with the actuators during adjustment. Also, an adjustable mount comprises a support and a fixed bar extending therefrom, an axially movable bar extending from the support and being axially movable relative thereto, and an element movably mounted to the fixed bar and movably mounted to the movable bar, the first element being selectively fixable relative to the fixed bar and selectively fixable relative to the movable bar. This arrangement allows a great degree of freedom in adjusting the position of the element as it can be selectively fixed to either or both of the fixed bar and movable bar.

Light source

A method of measuring the concentration of a substance, using a sensor () comprising a luminescent material, an LED light source () which supplies a pulse of light to the sensor to cause luminescence of the material, a detector () for detecting the emitted light and a data processing module () for analysing the signals and indicating the concentration of the substance. In a measuring sequence there is a series of pulses of light spaced apart sufficiently to permit the luminescence to decay between pulses. The signals which are analysed are those generated after each pulse of light has terminated and the luminescence is decaying. The data processing module () comprises a plurality of accumulators (A,B,C andD) which are controlled to be operable over a corresponding plurality of different periods of time during decay of the luminescence. Each accumulator accumulates values indicative of the intensity of the luminescence from the series of pulses in the measuring sequence. The parameters regarding the accumulators are stored in a configuration memory () which is part of the sensor.

Concentration measurement using luminescence

A sensor for measuring the concentration of an assay substance, such as oxygen in tissue. The sensor comprises an optical fiber () which passes through, a gas isolation collar () into a cavity () defined by a needle tube () attached to the gas isolation collar. Both the optical fiber () and the needle tube () are bonded to the gas isolation collar () in gas-tight fashion. The cleaved end () of the optical fiber within the cavity is provided with an optically active substance () having optical properties, such as fluorescence, dependent on the concentration of the assay substance. The cavity () is filled with a polymer () which is permeable to the assay substance. Lateral flow passages () are provided for the assay substance to pass into the permeable polymer () and to the fluorophor (). Light is supplied to the fluorophor via the optical fiber, and functions of its fluorescence are measured to calculate the concentration of the assay substance.

Method and device for use by disabled persons in communicating

A float controlled valve syphons water out of a swimming pool cover. The syphon valve includes co-operable male and female valve members disposed for mutually relative movement to bring them into and out of mutual engagement to thereby close and open flow communication through a syphon discharge passage formed in the male member. A float body is coupled to one of the said members for effecting the engagement and disengagement in response to the level of the water in the swimming pool cover. The male valve member is tapered at the forward end to facilitate engagement with a central recess in the female member. The female member is formed of more yielding material than the male member and has a thin walled portion receiving the male member and of sufficient flexibility to envelop dirt particles at the male-female member seal.
