This invention relates to a method for hiding stains in medical dressings and other textile substrates. The method includes applying a metallic silver coating to a textile substrate via a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVP) process. The metallic silver coating effectively hides any stain that comes into direct contact with the treated substrate by transferring the liquid beneath the surface of the coating. The invention also relates to textile substrates containing metallic silver coatings.

This disclosure relates generally to molded rubber articles such as the type used in water contact applications. More particularly, this disclosure is directed to molded rubber articles containing antimicrobial agents that control biofilm growth on the surface of the molded article. The molded rubber article is comprised of curable rubber compounds and a combination of both inorganic silver-containing antimicrobial agents and organic antimicrobial agents. An exemplary molded rubber article comprises ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber, silver-containing ion exchange antimicrobial agent, and an organic antifungal agent such as zinc pyrithione.

Antimicrobial rubber formulations and molded article

Improvements in increasing the amount of surface-available silver in thermoplastic articles comprising certain silver-containing antimicrobial agents. Such an invention requires the incorporation of a sufficient amount of a carboxylic acid salt within the thermoplastic article simultaneously with the necessary silver-containing antimicrobial agent. Certain carboxylic acid salts are standard acid scavengers and lubricants for certain thermoplastic applications; however, the amounts required within this inventive thermoplastic article are in excess of that commonly added within such articles, and the types of acid scavengers possibly added within such target thermoplastic articles are preferably neutralized hydrotalcite compounds, thereby permitting the carboxylic acid salt to function in the inventive manner. Surprisingly, such a high amount of such standard salts, as well as potentially other non-standard salts, present within the target thermoplastic cause the release of greater amounts of silver to the target article's surface, thereby permitting a greater degree of antimicrobial activity, among other potential benefits for such an increase in surface-available silver. Methods of producing such inventive thermoplastics are also encompassed within this invention.

Thermoplastic articles exhibiting high surface-available silver

Certain non-silicone vulcanized rubber articles made from at least a majority by weight of ethylene-propylene-diene modified (terpolymer) rubber (such as, without limitation, EPDM and/or NBR) that include silver-based compounds to provide highly desirable long-term antimicrobial characteristics within the cured rubber articles, at least a portion of which exhibits a color other than black, are provided. Such articles are in either solid or blown (foam or sponge) state (or combinations of both in multilayered forms, either all colored or individual layers colored) that can be utilized in a variety of different applications. As silver-based compounds are deleteriously affected by utilization of standard curing agents and curing accelerators, such as sulfur-based compounds and/or systems, the ability to provide such an effective antimicrobial vulcanized rubber article is rather difficult. However, this invention encompasses the presence of different non-sulfur-based curing systems and agents, such as peroxides, as one example, that permit vulcanization and do not irreversibly bind silver ions thereto, thereby resulting in long-term antimicrobial performance of the ultimate rubber article itself. The rubber articles must also comprise fillers and may also include plasticizers to provide desired characteristics of dimensional stability, stiffness, flexural modulus, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, elongation, and the like, for the ultimate rubber article, while simultaneously and surprisingly both enhancing the control of antimicrobial efficacy of the rubber article and not deleteriously binding to the available silver to permit coloring of the target rubber as well.

Colored antimicrobial vulcanized rubber articles

Ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber-containing articles that exhibit highly desirable long-term effective antimicrobial characteristics are provided. Such articles are in either solid or blown (foam or sponge) state (or combinations of both in multilayered forms) that can be utilized in a variety of different applications. As silver-based compounds are deleteriously affected by utilization of standard curing agents and curing accelerators, such as sulfur-based compounds and/or systems, the ability to provide such an effective antimicrobial vulcanized rubber article is rather difficult. However, this invention encompasses the presence of different non-sulfur-based curing systems and agents, such as peroxides, as one example, that permit vulcanization and do not irreversibly bind silver ions thereto, thereby resulting in long-term antimicrobial performance of the ultimate rubber article itself. The rubber articles must also comprise fillers and may also include plasticizers to provide desired characteristics of dimensional stability, stiffness, flexural modulus, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, elongation, and the like, for the ultimate rubber article, while simultaneously and surprisingly enhancing the control of antimicrobial efficacy of the rubber article as well.

Antimicrobial vulcanized EPDM rubber articles

Certain non-silicone pre-vulcanized raw rubber formulations that include silver-based compounds to provide highly desirable long-term antimicrobial characteristics within the ultimate cured rubber articles made therefrom are provided. Such formulations are intended to be vulcanized to provide solid or blown (foam or sponge) rubber articles which can be utilized in a variety of different applications (as well as multi-layered composites including such antimicrobial rubber. As silver-based compounds are deleteriously affected by utilization of standard curing agents and curing accelerators, such as sulfur-based compounds and/or systems, the ability to provide such an effective antimicrobial vulcanized rubber article is rather difficult. However, this invention encompasses the presence of different non-sulfur-based curing systems and curing agents, such as inorganic and organic peroxides and oxides, as some examples, that permit vulcanization and do not irreversibly bind silver ions thereto, thereby resulting in long-term antimicrobial performance of the ultimate rubber article itself. The raw rubber formulations may also comprise fillers and may also include plasticizers to provide desired characteristics of dimensional stability, stiffness, flexural modulus, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, elongation, and the like, for the ultimate rubber article, while simultaneously and surprisingly enhancing the control of antimicrobial efficacy in the rubber article as well.

Antimicrobial pre-vulcanized rubber compositions

Certain butadiene and/or natural rubber articles, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), natural rubber, and derivatives thereof, that exhibit highly desirable long-term effective antimicrobial characteristics. Such formulations are intended to be vulcanized to provide solid or foam rubber articles which can be utilized in a variety of different applications. Preferably such butadiene rubber formulations comprise silver-based antimicrobial compounds. As such silver-based compounds are deleteriously affected by utilization of standard non-silicone-rubber curing agents, such as sulfur-based catalysts, the ability to provide such an effective antimicrobial vulcanized rubber article is rather difficult. However, the invention encompasses the utilization of different catalyst species that permit vulcanization and silver stability for long-term antimicrobial performance of the silver-based compounds. Articles and specific vulcanizing procedures in accordance with such a novel antimicrobial vulcanized rubber are also included within the scope of this invention.
