A coating method using an endless, hollow substrate in the shape of a belt or cylinder having an outer surface, an inner surface, a first end, and an open second end, including: (a) depositing via dip coating a first coating solution over the outer surface of the substrate and simultaneously over the inner surface by permitting the first coating solution to flow through the second end to be deposited on the inner surface, thereby depositing a first layer over the outer surface and the inner surface; and (b) depositing via dip coating a second coating solution over the first layer on the outer surface of the substrate and simultaneously over the first layer on the inner surface by permitting the second coating solution to flow through the second end to be deposited on the first layer on the inner surface, thereby depositing a second layer over the outer surface and the inner surface, wherein the first layer and the second layer are deposited over all of the outer surface and the inner surface of a predetermined section of the substrate, wherein the first coating solution and the second coating solution are selected from the group consisting of a charge generating solution, a charge transport solution, an adhesive layer solution, and a charge blocking layer.

There is disclosed a dip coating apparatus including: (a) a single coating vessel capable of containing a batch of substrates vertically positioned in the vessel, wherein there is absent vessel walls defining a separate compartment for each of the substrates; (b) a coating solution disposed in the vessel, wherein the solution is comprised of materials employed in a photosensitive member and including a solvent that gives off a solvent vapor; and (c) a solvent vapor uniformity control apparatus which minimizes any difference in solvent vapor concentration encountered by the batch of the substrates in the air adjacent the solution surface, thereby improving coating uniformity of the substrates.

Dip coating apparatus having a single coating vessel

A flexible belt is disclosed which includes a major segment and at least one narrow minor segment, the narrow minor segment extending from one end of the belt to the opposite end and being more extendible than the major segment when subjected to an externally applied tension. This belt may be a component of a composite cylindrical device including a rigid drum substrate supporting the flexible belt in a stretched condition. The composite cylindrical device may be fabricated by providing a preformed rigid cylindrical support drum having a predetermined outer circumference, a first end and a second end, providing a flexible belt having an outer surface and an inner surface circumference of at least about 0.05 percent smaller than the outer circumference of the support drum, the belt including a major segment and at least one narrow minor segment, the narrow minor segment extending from one end of the belt to the opposite end and being more extendible than the major segment under the same applied tension, circumferentially expanding the belt with a flowing fluid under pressure until the inner surface circumference of the belt adjacent the first end is stretched to a new dimension of at least about 0.1 percent greater than the outer circumference of the support drum while maintaining the belt below the elastic limit of the belt, sliding the belt onto the support drum from the first end toward the second end of the support drum until substantially all of the belt encircles the outer surface of the support drum, and terminating the flow of the flowing liquid to allow the belt to contract onto the outer surface of the support drum.

Magnetic imaging member

An electroforming process and apparatus for creating a nickel or like substrate encapsulated by another material to prevent wear to the nickel substrate. The encapsulation of the nickel substrate requires encapsulation of the inner and outer diameter of the nickel substrate. The encapsulating material must adhere to the nickel substrate. Encapsulation of the nickel substrate prevents exposure of the nickel and thus avoids the hazardous nickel dust particles that can occur when the nickel is exposed.

There is disclosed a dip coating method for fabricating a photosensitive member comprising: (a) dipping a substrate into a coating solution comprised of a photosensitive material and raising the substrate, thereby depositing a coating of the photosensitive material on the substrate; and (b) dipping the substrate in the same coating solution and raising the substrate, thereby increasing the thickness of the coating.

Multiple dip coating method

An electrostatographic imaging process is disclosed which includes providing a flexible electrostatographic, particularly electrophotographic, imaging belt including a substrate layer, a charge generating layer, charge transport layer, and two parallel longitudinal edges, the imaging belt having a charge transport layer tension strain of less than about 0.05 percent across the width of the belt, mounting the imaging belt on a plurality of spaced apart support rollers, transporting the belt around the support rollers, repeatedly applying a cross belt compression strain distributed in an arcuate gradient of increasing intensity from the longitudinal centerline of the belt to each of the edges of the belt, the strain applied at each of the edges of the belt repeatedly peaking to an intensity at the longitudinal edges of at least about 0.6 percent greater than the strain applied to the centerline of the belt, forming an electrostatic latent image on the belt, developing the electrostatic latent image with toner to form a toner image corresponding to the latent image, transferring the toner image to a receiving member, and repeating the forming, developing and transferring steps at least once. The flexible electrostatographic imaging belt may be fabricated without an anti-curl layer in a continuous process.

There is disclosed a dip coating method for fabricating a photosensitive member employing a substrate which defines a top non-imaging portion, a middle imaging portion, and a bottom non-imaging portion, wherein the method comprises: (a) immersing the bottom non-imaging portion, the middle imaging portion, and optionally a part of the top non-imaging portion of the substrate in a coating solution; (b) raising the middle imaging portion out of the coating solution; and (c) raising the bottom non-imaging portion out of the coating solution at a take-up speed which is decreasing from the take-up speed of the substrate at the junction between the middle imaging portion and the bottom non-imaging portion, thereby reducing the size of any bead on the bottom non-imaging portion.

An electrostatographic imaging member assembly including a hollow electrostatographic imaging drum having a first end and a second end, at least one coating on the drum extending to at least the first end of the drum, the coating having an outer electrostatographic imaging surface and a first drum supporting end cap mounted on the first end of the drum, the first drum supporting end cap including a disk shaped member having an annular skirt encircling an exterior surface of the first end of the cylindrical substrate, the annular skirt having an imaginary axis coextensive with an imaginary axis of the drum. This electrostatographic imaging member assembly may be fabricated by sliding the skirt of the end cap over the end of the drum with or without presoftening of the coating. The electrostatographic imaging member assembly may be utilized in electrostatographic imaging apparatus in which the end caps support electrostatographic imaging apparatus subassembly components.
