A cathode current collector for a sodium sulphur cell is formed of a metal substrate, for example of a nickel alloy such as Inconel 600, which is provided with a firmly adherent coating of carbon which is produced by decomposition of a carbon-containing gas in a glow discharge with the substrate heated to a temperature of 200.degree. C. to 1000.degree. C. in an electric field, conveniently a radio frequency field employed for inductively heating the substrate.

Current collector for electrochemical cells and method of making

A method of producing a beta-alumina ceramic article containing a doping addition of magnesium oxide or of magnesium oxide and lithium oxide, comprising the steps of wet-milling a precursor material or emulsification of an already powdered precursor material to form an aqueous slurry, spray-drying the slurry to produce a powder, forming the powder into a green shape and sintering the shape, wherein the precursor material contains at least some of the magnesium oxide in the form of magnesium aluminate.

Production of beta-alumina

In a sodium-sulphur cell having a solid electrolyte separating sodium from a cathodic region containing sulphur/polysulphides in a graphite felt, a cathode current collector is formed of an aluminium substrate on which is an interstrate layer of nickel-chromium alloy covered by a coating of titanium oxide or other electronically conductive oxide intrinsically inert to the cathodic reactant.

Electrochemical cells

In an electrochemical cell, such as a sodium-sulphur cell, having a tube of solid electrolyte material separating a liquid alkali metal from a cathodic reactant, the electrolyte tube is surrounded by constraining means which apply an inward pressure as the cell temperature rises. This is achieved either by having a suitable means, e.g., wire, around the tube with a lower coefficient of expansion than the tube, or by putting powder or particles or corrugated metal or other constraining means between the tube and a surrounding housing, the materials being chosen to have appropriate coefficients of expansion to give the required inward pressure.
