The glass sheet is heated to a heat-softened condition in a furnace, and conveyed to a prescribed position above an upper shaping surface of a ring mold. The sheet is then transferred onto the ring mold by lowering part of the conveyor means, and bent by a process involving raising both the ring mold and the conveyor means. This combination minimizes the introduction of optical distortion into the sheet. A preferred bending process is to press bend the sheet between the ring mold and an opposed upper bending mold.

Method of and apparatus for bending glass sheets

An edge-encapsulated glazing module for a vehicle has a moulded encapsulation which embodies means to provide a function other than the fitting of the module to a vehicle body. The said means may be means for mounting a lighting unit; conduit means; or a mounting for a vehicle accessory. The lighting unit may be a rear light for the vehicle. The conduit means may comprise electrical leads on an RF lead. Alternatively, the conduit means may comprise a hollow tube for water or air. The vehicle accessory may be a rear view mirror; a license disc, windscreen wiper or a spoiler.

Edge-encapsulated glazing module

A manufacturing line for tempering glass sheets includes a furnace, an oven, a bending station, and a chilling section positioned in order along a generally horizontally extending conveyor for the glass sheets. The oven extends between the furnace and the bending station to maintain the glass sheets at a predetermined temperature. The oven has sidewalls formed of a plurality of brushes and is selectively extensible along the path of travel of the glass sheets. The oven includes controlled heating devices. The chilling section includes a plurality of tubes positioned above and below the path of travel of the glass sheets and connected to a source of air under pressure. The tubes are arranged in rows generally perpendicular to the path of travel and columns generally parallel to the path of travel in order to cause the glass sheets to meet predetermined fragmentation specifications.

Apparatus and method for tempering glass sheets

An edge-encapsulated glazing module for a vehicle has a moulded encapsulation which embodies means to provide a function other than the fitting of the module to a vehicle body. Thermally toughened glass sheets of thickness 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm for use as motor vehicle side or rear windows, are produced by quenching producing an average central tensile stress in the range 62 MN/m.sup.2 to 44.0 MN/n.sup.2. At least one gas jet is directed at the glass sheet to augment toughening stresses and produce at least one strip-shaped region of more highly toughened glass. The central tensile stress in the strip-shaped region is in the range from 2 MN/m.sup.2 to 5 MN/m.sup.2 greater than the average central tensile stress in the glass sheet. There are major and minor principal stresses in the strip-shaped region acting in the plane of the glass sheet. The difference between the major and minor principal stresses is in the range 5 MN/m.sup.2 to 25 MN/m.sup.2.

Toughened glass sheets

A method of thermally toughening a glass sheet in which the glass sheet is advanced through a quenching station and subjected to a localized gas flow. The localized gas flow is pulsed at a repetition frequency related to the speed of advance of the glass through the quenching station. The toughened glass sheet so produced has a distribution of regions of more highly toughened glass interspersed with regions of lesser toughened glass.

Method of toughening glass sheets

A method of thermally toughening a glass sheet in which the glass sheet is advanced into a flow of quenching gas directed towards at least one surface of the sheet to induce overall toughening stress in the glass sheet. The advance of the sheet relative to the quenching gas flow is terminated, either by halting the sheet in the flow or by moving the outlets providing the flow with the sheet, so that at least one surface of the sheet is subjected to localized gas flows. The toughened glass sheet so produced has a distribution of regions of more highly toughened glass interspersed with regions of lesser toughened glass.
