A method can include acquiring drilling performance data for a downhole tool; modeling drilling performance of the downhole tool to generate results; training a machine learning model using the drilling performance data and the results to generate a trained machine learning model; and predicting behavior of the downhole tool using the trained machine learning model.

Drilling system

A method of quantifying tortuosity of a wellbore includes receiving survey data for the wellbore indicating an azimuth and an inclination for the wellbore at one or more measurement depths of the wellbore. The method further includes receiving wellbore diameter data for the wellbore indicating the diameter of the wellbore at one or more measurement depths of the wellbore. The method further includes, based on the survey data and the wellbore data and for each measurement depth, selecting a reference diameter and determining a tortuosity length corresponding to a maximum length that a straight tubular having the reference diameter can extend from the measurement depth and down through the wellbore without bending.

Systems and methods for analyzing tortuosity in underground wellbores

A method for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes rotating a bottom hole assembly (BHA) in the wellbore to drill. The BHA includes a rotary steerable tool or a steerable drill bit having at least one external pad configured to extend radially outward into contact with a wall of the wellbore and thereby steer the drilling. A rotation rate of the BHA is measured and a drilling parameter waveform is received. The rotation rate and the waveform are processed to select discrete times for extending the at least one external pad while drilling.

Steering actuation methodology for a rotary steerable system

A system includes a bottom hole assembly (BHA) that includes a drill bit configured to drill a pilot hole in a subterranean formation, such that the drill bit provides a first point of contact between the BHA and the subterranean formation. The BHA includes a steering pad assembly that includes one or more steering pads each configured to move over a path of travel between a retracted position and an extended position to provide a second point of contact between the BHA and the subterranean formation, and a reamer configured to expand the pilot hole into a borehole, such that the reamer provides a third point of contact between the BHA and the subterranean formation. The system includes a controller configured to steer the BHA via the first, second, and third points of contact and adjustments to the second point of contact via control of the steering pad assembly.

A method for evaluating a subterranean wellbore includes rotating a drill string in the subterranean wellbore. The drill string includes a rotary steerable tool, a steerable drill bit, or other rotary steering tool with at least one pad configured to extend radially outward from a tool body and engage a wall of the wellbore. Radial displacements of the pad are measured while rotating and processed to compute a curvature of the wellbore.

Estimating wellbore curvature using pad displacement measurements

A mud motor includes a rotor and a stator. Drilling fluid received by cavities of the mud motor drives the rotor to rotate within the stator. The rotor includes one or more rotor lobes extending helically and defining a rotor pitch. The stator includes two or more stator lobes extending helically and defining a stator pitch. The rotor and the stator together define a tapered profile of the mud motor that varies proceeding from a top end of the mud motor to a bottom end of the mud motor. At least one of the rotor pitch or the stator pitch vary as proceeding from the top end of the mud motor to the bottom end of the mud motor.

A rotary steerable tool may include a tool body with an upper end and a lower end. Additionally, the tool body may include at least one steering assembly extending from the tool body and includes at least one steering actuator configured to extend beyond other portions of the steering assembly. Furthermore, at least one cutter may be disposed on the rotary steerable tool a distance from the at least one steering actuator.

A downhole steering system includes a substantially tubular housing, a shaft positioned within the substantially tubular housing, a first bearing and a second bearing, the first and second bearings being configured to support rotation of the shaft relative to the housing. The first bearing, the second bearing, the shaft, and the housing at least partially define a chamber therebetween. The system also includes at least one structure positioned axially between the first and second bearing and being configured to extend from an exterior of the housing in response to pressure communicated to the chamber.

Downhole steering system and methods

A downhole tool includes at least a pilot section, a first expansion section, and a second expansion section. The pilot section has a plurality of cutting elements to cut a pilot hole. Each of the expansion sections has a plurality of cutting elements to successively expand the pilot hole to achieve a final wellbore radius. The pilot section, first expansion section, and second expansion section each have one or more stabilizer pads on respective gages to stabilize the downhole tool during wellbore creation.

Stepped downhole tools and methods of use

A steerable drilling system in accordance to an embodiment includes a bias unit integrated with the drill bit to form a steering head and an electronic control system located remote from the steering head and electrically connected to a digital valve of the bias unit.

Steerable drill bit system

A downhole drilling apparatus may comprise a rotatable body with various cutting elements connected thereto, some radially protruding therefrom, some radially extendable therefrom, and some revolvable relative thereto about a common axis. In operation, when the body is rotated, the radially protruding cutting elements may bore a generally cylindrical borehole. The radially extendable cutting elements may be extended during specific portions of the body's rotation to degrade certain areas of an inner wall of the borehole transforming it into a non-cylindrical borehole. At certain times, the revolvable cutting elements may be allowed to slide against the non-cylindrical inner wall while freely revolving to minimize disturbance to the borehole shape. At other times, revolution of these revolvable cutting elements may be restrained to ream the borehole back to a cylindrical shape.

Downhole drilling apparatus with drilling, steering, and reaming functions and methods of use

A downhole steering system includes a substantially tubular housing, a shaft positioned within the substantially tubular housing, a first bearing and a second bearing, the first and second bearings being configured to support rotation of the shaft relative to the housing. The first bearing, the second bearing, the shaft, and the housing at least partially define a chamber therebetween. The system also includes at least one structure positioned axially between a the first and second bearing and being configured to extend from an exterior of the housing in response to pressure communicated to the chamber.

A method for designing a physical component of a drilling system includes defining input parameters of a first primitive in the drilling system, simulating the first primitive to obtain a performance parameter of the first primitive, designing, based on the performance parameter and to obtain a design, the physical component for the drilling system, and storing the design. The physical component has the input parameters of the first primitive. The input parameters include at least one control relationship between a first control point on the first primitive and a second control point.

Methods and systems for designing drilling systems

A drilling apparatus may alter a direction of travel of a drill bit as it forms a borehole in the earth by furnishing the borehole with a cross-sectional shape that urges the drill bit in a radial direction. Such a cross-sectional shape may comprise two circular arcs, one larger than the apparatus and one smaller. The apparatus may be urged away from the smaller circular arc and into the open space provided by the larger circular arc. Such an apparatus may comprise an axial body and a cutting element extendable in a single radial direction from an exterior of the axial body. Extension of the cutting element may allow it to engage and degrade an inner wall of the borehole. An abrasion-resistant gauge pad protruding from the exterior of the body may ride against the borehole wall and urge the body radially.
