A cervical spine orthosis includes a neck collar, a load bearing chest plate and a support strut coupling the neck collar to the load bearing chest plate. The support strut can be pivotally connected to the neck collar so that when necessary the entire chest plate and support strut can be moved relative to the neck collar so as to permit access to a chest area of the patient without completely removing support for the patient's head and neck.

A canopy is formed of an oval flexible sheet of solar radiation and wind resistant material held in extended position by a resilient band and sized so that the band and sheet material are pulled into a saddle shape. Support for the canopy is provided by two flexible supports attached to the canopy at its edges and to a base structure, such as a wheel chair, stroller, patio rail or lawn chair. The supports are long enough so that the canopy can be adjusted to various positions above and alongside the occupant of the base structure for overhead and lateral shelter. The supports are nonresilient and are stiff enough to hold the canopy in the selected position into which it is placed.

An apparatus provides foot and leg support for an immobilized patient. The apparatus is designed to adapt to the lower leg of the patient while providing sufficient support while avoiding cell death that can lead to skin damage. Furthermore, the structure is provided to prevent foot drop while enhancing the storability of the device when not in use.

Apparatus for providing foot and leg support for an immobilized patient

An intubation device and a method of intubating a patient with an endotracheal tube is disclosed. The device comprises a housing and a flexible, tubular sheath having one end connected to the housing and a free end extending away from it. The sheath, which is adapted to fit within the endotracheal tube, also has a special light at the end of the sheath's free end for selectively providing illumination. In use, the sheath is inserted into the endotracheal tube until the light is at the end of the distal end of the tube. A clamp on the intubation device then clamps the endotracheal tube to the housing to prevent relative movement between the tube and the sheath. A tube stop is then slid along the sheath into abutting contact with the proximal end of the endotracheal tube to identify the location on the sheath corresponding to the proximal end of the tube. When the tube is properly positioned in the patient, the light will create a distinct glow visible to an observer in the area of the sternal notch. Thus, when it is desired to confirm or recheck placement of the endotracheal tube in the patient, the sheath may be simply inserted into the tube until the proximal end of the tube contacts the tube stop. The device also includes a trocar wire for insertion into the sheath to provide added stiffness.

A dummy for practicing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of a human being comprising a simulation of the thorax and the head and a lungs simulation in the form of a bag which can be inflated through the mouth or nose opening of the head. The thorax is formed by a hollow body of plastic material, which is in air exchange relationship with the atmosphere and which has stiffening ribs which reproduce approximately human ribs. In that arrangement the number and size of the stiffening ribs are so selected that the compressibility and return force of the thorax correspond to those of a human thorax not only in regard to extent but also in terms of their nature and form, and thus provide a particularly good approximation to the behavior of a human thorax.

For securing a patient's head in a head immobilizer, a dual adhesive strap is provided which is designed to lay across and adhere to the patient's forehead and have each of its ends adhere to a spine board. The strap has a bottom side comprising a central region which comprises skin contact adhesive flanked by two regions which comprise board contact adhesive. The board contact adhesive is stronger than the skin contact adhesive, such that the strap stays adhered under various environmental conditions, and the skin of the patient's forehead is not injured by the skin contact adhesive. The strap and the adhesive regions are preferably large enough to accommodate many sizes of heads, spine boards, and head immobilizers. Preferably, a removable backing covers the adhesive side of the strap.

A dummy for practicing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of a human being comprises a simulation of the thorax, the head and the lungs, with a spring device arranged in the thorax simulation to simulate the compression resistance of the thorax. The thorax simulation is a three-dimensional structure with a thorax cavity, which is cut out of flat foldable web material, for example, cardboard, along predetermined contour lines, folded along predetermined fold lines to provide the three-dimensional structure, and joined.

A cervical collar is disclosed which is formed from a stiff flexible plastic material and comprises (a) a neck encircling band comprising a back portion and a front portion and (b) a chin support formed from such plastic material. The collar provides two features which confer greater comfort when the collar is worn for extended periods of time. The chin support is supported to reduce the force of contact between the chin support and the top edge of the front portion of said collar. In a preferred embodiment, the support is provided by a plurality of load-bearing tabs extending from the top edge of the front portion of the collar. The collar also has a shelf-forming member which is attached to the back portion of the collar. Preferably the shelf-forming member is a sheet of padding material and the forming means is a strap which passes between the back portion of the collar and the shelf-forming member such that when the strap is engaged to hold the back portion in a flexed position the shelf-forming member forms the supporting shelf.

Intubation device

An aspirator for removing vomit and like matter from the mouth and throat. A bellows integral with a collection reservoir includes a handle grip reciprocable alternately to draw vomit into the reservoir from an attached catheter insertable into the throat, and vent air through an exhaust valve. The bellows-reservoir unit is detachably mounted to a frame which also includes a handle grip and springs. The grips are squeezed to draw in vomit, and released to permit the springs to collapse the bellows. The operation is one-handed, the device is portable, and the bellows-reservoir unit can be separated from the frame and discarded after use. A feature is a one-way inlet valve in the catheter to prevent vomit from draining back into the throat during aspirator operation.

A spine immobilizer particularly adapted for rendering an accident victim's head and upper body immobile. The spine immobilizer in a preferred form is made of a sheet of corrugated cardboard including a multilayer spine panel to resist longitudinal bending, laterally extending head panels bendable into position adjacent the sides of the person's head, laterally extending body panels bendable into conformity with the person's upper body, and straps and fastening assemblies for securing the body panels in position. The immobilizer includes box sections providing increased resistance to longitudinal bending, one formed by laterally extending stiffener panels having free ends arrangable in overlying relation, and others formed by the strap arrangement. Features include laterally adjustable carrying handles, and slot and strap configurations which reduce tearing of the cardboard.

Spine immobilizer

There is disclosed a portable cervical collar formed of an elongated band of stiff, flexible sheet material which can be formed into a cylindrical collar. The collar includes a chin support brace which is a generally C-shaped flat sheet that can be attached with its opposite ends secured to opposite sides of the formed collar thereby forming a concave, forwardly projecting support shelf to immobilize the wearer's chin. The collar is intended as a portable, compact collar for field use by paramedics and the like during transportation and initial examination of a patient.
