A GPON module comprises a housing and a circuit board disposed in the housing. The circuit board further includes ground lines that substantially isolate regions of the circuit board, an electro-optical interface for converting an inbound optical signal to an electrical signal and processing circuitry that is arranged to provide an electrical RF signal to an RF interface. The RF interface comprises a three-pin RF connector exposed from the housing, wherein the RF connector is coupled directly to the circuit board, and two of the three pins are coupled to ground.

An adapted semiconductor laser package that may convert a first type of package pin-out arrangement to a desired pin-out arrangement. The laser package may include a laser package including a laser, an isolator, a lens, a fiber sleeve, and a pin-out arrangement. The isolator and the fiber sleeve may be jointly arranged away from the laser. The laser package may also include an adapter with a first section with a plurality of holes geometrically arranged and mated with the package pin-out arrangement, a second section with an adapter pin-out arrangement with two rows of pins extending along opposite sides of the package, and electrical connections between the plurality of holes and the pins.

A passive optical network transceiver includes an avalanche photodiode, a bias voltage generator for supplying a bias voltage to the avalanche photodiode, a temperature detector for measuring the operating temperature of the avalanche photodiode, a memory for storing one reference bias voltage and a processing circuitry to process the value of the measured operating temperature and the reference bias voltage to generate a control signal for controlling the bias voltage generator to adjust the bias voltage supplied by the said bias voltage generator.

An optical network system having a global controller capable of controlling all the elements of the network. The controller receives performance data from each optical network element and calculates a performance value for each channel transmitting through the system. The controller then isolates the channel with the minimum performance value and tests possible changes in network element parameters to find a change which would increase this performance value. Once such a change is found, it is implemented and the system is reoptimized.

Control of parameters in a global optical controller

A passive optical network transceiver including a surge protection circuit so as to protect the electro-optical circuitry from lightning or other electrical surges. The surge protection circuit includes a ground line and at least one capacitor provided in a first line. In particular, the capacitance value of the capacitor is such as to limit the surge current in the first line, and the breakdown voltage of the capacitor is such as to limit the surge voltage between the first line and the ground line. In one embodiment, the surge protection circuit includes a second line connecting the first line to the ground line and at least one inductor provided in the second line. The surge protection circuit may include one capacitor with small value and high voltage rating, and multiple capacitors with larger value and lower voltage rating.

A method and an apparatus for implementing carrier suppressed data format on conventional OTDM modules is provided. Adaptive phase shifting of optical signals traversing one of the tributaries of an OTDM module is performed with feedback loop control. A tapped portion of the input carrier signal is phase modulated at a frequency f, and is combined with a tapped portion of the output from the OTDM. A phase shifter controller fed with this combined signal photodetects and band-pass filters the signal around fto extract the amplitude of the AC component of the envelope of the combined signal, which depends upon the phase difference between successive pulses of the OTDM output. This signal is used to control a phase shifter coupled along one of the tributaries of the OTDM to adjust the phase difference of the signals of the two tributaries so that carrier suppression results.

Carrier-suppressed optical time domain multiplexing

An apparatus is provided comprising a dual optical amplifier. The two optical amplifiers are integrated, in that they share at a set of optical, electrical, or opto-electrical components. The two optical amplifiers may share a pump laser. Alternatively, the optical amplifiers may share photo-detectors. Methods of controlling the signal strength of output signals are also provided. A chip-based integrated optical dual amplifier, using Erbium-Doped Waveguides, is also provided.

Systems and methods for providing compact dispersion compensation modules. In one implementation, a dispersion compensation module includes a polarizer having a first port, a second port, and a third port. The dispersion compensation module also includes a reflection etalon and a quarter-waveplate positioned between the reflection etalon and the second port of the polarizer.

A method and an apparatus is provided for introducing tunable second order polarization mode dispersion compensation to an optical signal without introducing any first order polarization mode dispersion into the optical signal. A method and an apparatus is also provided for tunable chromatic dispersion compensation by rotating the polarization state of an input signal to match the chromatic like second order PMD compensation provided by the present invention. In one configuration, birefringent elements are arranged into at least two stages, each stage having at least two birefringent elements, each birefringent element of one stage oriented orthogonal to a corresponding birefringent element of a corresponding stage. In another configuration, the polarization of optical signals emerging from each birefringent element are rotated to create effective orthogonal orientations between corresponding birefringent elements of corresponding stages.

According to the invention there is provided a method of controlling an optical communication system comprising an optical transmitter, an optical receiver and an optical fiber interconnecting the optical transmitter and the optical receiver, the method comprising determining the performance of the optical communication system and controlling at least one setting parameter of the optical transmitter according to the measured performance.

Auto-setting and optimization of EAM with optical line systems

A Re-Configurable Dispersion Compensation Module is provided. A new approach to the variable DCM, the RDCM combines existing optical switch technology with existing fixed DCM technology and advantageously also with existing TDCM technology into a programmable smart optical component. Advantageously Micro-Electrical Mechanical Switch (MEMS) optical switch technology may be used. The alternate RDCM technology provides a controller, and a set of controllable switches to employ a set of DCMs and TDCMs for adjusting the dispersion compensation along an optical signal path. This alternate RDCM technology mitigates the problems of conventional TDCMs, while fitting most of the requirements for high speed systems, and being of a compact size.
